Historia
Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

This is a well expressed and well researched perspective. It is all about freedom. Worth the time, no matter what side of an aisle you may be on.

Painful
Revisado: 12-29-20
You have a grandmother, wounded deeply by the holocaust.
A girl who became a mother young and lost the kids but really doesn’t regret it, except in the broken places of her mind.
A daughter to came looking for the mom she lost as a baby.
A vile man who seduces women and doesn’t care about them at all. His mentalities prove to be vile. Live by the sword die by the sword.
And in all of this, children hurt for generations past, present, and perhaps future.
Well put together. Well written. This is the long term affects of not just the holocaust, but the Iranian mentalities toward women that have seeped into cultures which were folded in.

But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

The female reader was great. The male was too loud but I did get used to him. I hope they keep the same readers for the next book.

Historia
The irascible husband of Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody demonstrates again why he has been nicknamed "Father of Curses." Denied permission to dig at the pyramids of Dahshoor, Emerson is awarded instead the "pyramids" of Mazghunah: countless mounds of rubble in the midst of nowhere. Nothing in this barren spot seems worthy of interest - until an antiquities dealer is murdered in his Cairo shop.

Good book but some odd editing which is very noticeable. I also prefer the other reader. Not bad though. Very good for a free book.

I loved this book for the impressive plot twist. It just shocked me. I really was mislead. The narrator did a really good job about making the characters come alive. It was really well written. Well done

Historia
In the summer of 1937, Amelia Earhart is the most famous woman in the world - a record-breaking pilot, a best-selling author, and a modern woman shattering the glass ceiling in the early days of aviation. And then she vanishes. In Tampa, Florida, 15-year-old Lizzie Friedlander spends her afternoons glued to her father’s radio, tapping into the enormity of a world she longs to travel. Lizzie can hardly believe her ears when she picks up a radio signal from a faraway source that sets her heart racing: “Amelia Earhart calling SOS!”

Contains Strong Language
Revisado: 02-12-20
I wish there had been a review or a content note. I listen with my kids and it infuriates me to get 3/4 through and then the F bombs are dropping.
Compelling story but I hate that the real girl wasn’t given credit. Also the assumption that because she was enthralled by AE, it has to be a sexual interest. AE voice sounds like when you select text and have it voice translated. Not bad, but not awesome at 1.25 speed.

Weak story
Revisado: 12-26-19
This was not badly written, but it was not well written either. Weak over all. The inability of the reader to pronounce things like, “Pianoforte” correctly was also rough on the ears. Weak characters and weak ending. It is like flat champagne.
I have heard this reader before and she did better on other books.
First book by Griep and probably my last.

Stories separated by decades and continents come together beautifully
Revisado: 10-10-19
Another great book by Melanie Dobson. This book looks, wincing, at some of the hard things that happened during World War II. It doesn’t shy away from the reality that is still here today. Well researched. Historically accurate. The truth really does set you free.

This was about half volume the whole time and sort of unfeeling or slurred at times. I had to rewind and listen again and again to catch everything. The publisher would benefit by re-recording or re-editing the content.
Cute story. Well written.

Great series!
Revisado: 04-28-18
I listened to the first 10 on Audible. This review applies to the entire series.
I just binge listened to the entire Magnificent Devices series on Audible (how else to spend 12 credits?).
I look forward to, “Fields of Iron” and “Fields of Gold” being released in audio format. Other than the fact that the reader cannot do a decent American accent, they are fabulous. I do not fault that as most people in England would say the same about an American doing their accents. 🤣
I appreciate the author keeping this series fun and clean. (Though there is war violence) I love steampunk but have a hard time with the pervasive sexuality of so many series. I don’t need the selacious to distract from writing ability, story line, character development.
I highly recommend this series.
