"It started out with a bang and just got better." -Goodreads reviewer Over 1,000 pages of nonstop action! If there's one thing Adam Eckhart knows, it's that humans are trouble. After all, he is one. As captain of the Marathon, a cobbled-together ship crewed by aliens and androids scraping by on odd jobs at the outskirts of settled space, Adam has plenty to worry about without adding his own species to the mix. But when a pair of mortally wounded humans cross his path during a heist gone wrong, he finds himself compelled to save them. Big mistake. Because if there's one more thing Adam knows...

Enjoyable & especially appreciated it was part of Audible Plus catalog. Was disappointed there isn't any continuing books in this series yet; as it ended before the main situation was resolved, leaving me with an obviousky unfinished series.
virtual ai did pretty good on narration, which I was hoping it wouldn't, as I'd hate to see audible narrators lose their jobs. I mean, where would Audible be without narrators like Mark Boyett or RC Bray? I don't see how ai narration can hold a candle to their like.
The story & characters were overall pretty interesting & not bad for this type of storyline. I did get a little bored with the, what seemed to me to be, overlong introspectiobs on the relationship of the father to his kids (the MC, his brother & Sister). I could've done with a little less of that, but it also could've been the mood I'm in, haven't had as easy a time getting interested in stories lately, except new books in some of my favorite series, like Undying Mercenaries, for example. This book is more serious than that, not as much humor.
Some could be my frustration in it ending without having an ending. And it's frustrating when you hear simething in the olys catalog but then can't continue it because it's not available (as in this one) or it's too expensive to continue, like wanting a full credit for a 4-6 hr book. That's robbery in my opinion.
If your looking forca new sci fi seriesthough, this is a bargain as it's books 1-4 in 1 volume. I've listened to other titles by this author & they've all been pretty good. I'd give it a B+ and that's a job well done.

Fun Series
Revisado: 11-17-24
This series has been a lot of fun. Nothing too heavy, it's definitely of a feel good type story, with a lot of silly humor, but it still has some action, butt kicking & an occasional spaceship fight thown in.
One thing I personally enjoyed about it, especially as I attained official senior status with my last birthday, is that it has a number of older folks in the main group of characters & even rescues a couple from a nursing home. The author shows reverence for the elderly, an appreciation of the skills & knowledge most have acquired in a lifetime & recognized that through medical advancements from the aliens, he can restore their health & take advantage of all they can offer, saving them from spending their last years, forgotten & alone, drugged up & wasting away, lost in the boredom of life in a nursing home with overworked & often uncaring staff, just waiting & wanting to die to escape the hell their life has become.
Sorry, have had recent experiences with relatives "rehabing" in several nursing homes & seeing how they're run, the lack of proper care (& Yes, there are plenty of wonderful, hard working & caring staff in nursing homes, but they are almost always extremely overworked in an understaffed environment & can only do so much, which is, unfortunately, not enough.) Anyway, I digress. The series is so much more than this one aspect I mentioned, it was just something I really appreciated as aging person & one who spent 7 years of my life caring full time for my Mother at her home (including during Covid), so she wouldn't have to suffer experiencing end of life in a nursing home.
This series is basically about a human man who meets an alien woman whose saucer crash landed near his house & through her, he winds up becoming a spaceship garage & alien rescue outfit, with a carefully selected group of other human "approved contacts" & some alien relatives & friends, including a few robots with personalities.
They have lots of adventures including search & rescue of lost spaceships on Earth, dealing with alien government burecrats & agencies, alien pirates with a moon base, slavers, big foots & scumbag humans & aliens alike, all while managing to stay under the radar to avoid the US government & military's notice.
Start with the 1st Publisher's Pack, books 1 & hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as me & be moved to readt this 2nd Publisher's pack & so on. Now I've got to go walk my dog while I fire up Bob & Nikki's Publisher's Pack 3!

enjoyable read but too short
Revisado: 02-07-24
Hate paying a credit ( or even 7.49 got the kindle add on), for an 8 hr book, never mind an inexcusable 6hr book, but this series was so enjoyable, with likeable characters, lots of action, snark & alien monsters, set in an slmost now Las Vegas & really sucked me in. Damn. I broke my principles & bought 4-8, after listening to the 1st three which were included in the Audible membership. I rationalized the free 3 made it average out a little more reasonably. I still had to dock a star for the 6 hr shortness which made every book just stop in a strange spot. T least to my mind. it see.ed this was really 3 it 4 books cut up into 8 for the AUthor to make more money.
I know authors need to earn a living but I still find 6 hr books to seem like pieces of a regular book. guess I'm old fashioned that way.
any way, really enjoyed the story, was a fun set up and characters, tho a bit predictable and all that, it was well done & I always wanted to start the next one right away.

Nothing new but nicely done
Revisado: 01-12-24
Continuation of the story of 2 main characters (MCs) in this universe, about a set of twins seperated at birth & their struggles to survive & make a meaningful difference in a world of little hope for the common man, run by ruthless major corporations and the machinations of their powerful leaders who strive for ever increasing control, the destruction & subjugation of the rival corporations & total dominion over all.
Yup, just another typical sci fi plot line, but rather nicely done (i.e. an entertaining light read, likely in the YA genre based on the age of the MCs & their naive idealism). Skewed pretty heavyily on the mistreatment of the average person and a society run by an extremely immoral & callously sciopathic ruling class with a huge propirtion on the Have Not's vs a very small % of the very, very well off with almost no middle class.
This is the 2nd installment of 3 in this series & I'll be moving on to #3 next to finish off this series as I contemplate what's next on my reading list. I've read almost all the other non magic sci fi series by this authorcwhich were quite a bit better than this. i haven't looked at the publish dates, but perhaps this is earlier work as I found the other series had more believable worlds & the characters were a bit more beielanle & better fleshed out. I'm not sure if this had been the 1st series I'd read by this author whetger I would have continued reading more of his work, so I suggest if you're starting off with this series, consider moving over to another instead. Though, if you managed to get through book 1, which was, imo, much worse than this book 2, you'll probably like this series.
If you found #1 hard to swallow, try another series by same author instead, I think youll like them better. I'd already bought these 3 before reading 1 because I had enjoyed the other series so much I wanted to read more by this author but was I quite surprised. This series almost seemed like it was written by someone else, thus my speculation that it was perhaps earlier work.
just my opinion, for what it's worth.

Series still going strong
Revisado: 07-17-23
Kept me enthralled and wanting to move on to the next book asap. A lot of times series tend to run out of steam by now and start to feel either too short, like a book split into multiple books just to make money, or weighted down with filler (same reason), or just boring “been there done that drivel” heard told in a million other books, but NOT this one.
The characters are growing & changing based on that growth & events, circumstances, etc. in ways that seem plausible. I’m still getting surprises where I can say, I didn’t see that coming. I find myself getting really caught up in the different character’s stories. It’s not just about the 1 MC, but a number of characters in the book are followed, each having their own chapters, or portions of chapters, switching back and forth between the group of them & what they’re doing, as the format to move the story along & I find myself getting so engrossed in what 1is doing that when it switches to another, I’m frustrated because I wanted to keep going with that one, but only a few minutes later I’m feeling the same way about the current character & this keeps happening. Basically all the characters are done with such fullness I can’t help but get sold hook line and sinker on all of them.
This is 1 of the better series I’ve read lately. I’m enjoying it as much as I have reading Galaxies Edge, Paradigm 2045, The Lost Stars/Lost Fleet (Jack Campbell), Koban/Koban Universe & Dunes to name a couple current & past favorites.
I just bought the next2 books in Spiral Wars series & it’s time to dive into the “Ceephay Queen.”
PS - The Narrator, John Lee, is easy to listen to & does a great job bringing these books to life. I’ve come to enjoy him in this series as much as RC Bray in others. I’d be extremely disappointed if another narrator showed up so I hope Mr. Lee continues to narrate the rest of The Spiral Wars.

great new sci fi series
Revisado: 06-07-23
IMO this book was a lot of fun, had interesting, had interesting characters & had some originality in it's workings (in so much as there's really nothing new on this earth & I've read/listened to literally over a 1000 books), this one brought some new twists to the table.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, some may have been a bit too into their typecast, but on the whole were great fun.
As a woman, I love that the MC was a woman & even better an black woman & the man behind it all, also black (I'm not, but it's about time the heroes of the stories aren't always handsome WASP men. This has an ethnically diverse group with Chinese, Russian, a "Barbie" & an android.
Another thing I love is it's a healthy sized book, not the overpriced 6 hr lets stretch the series out book that's so prevalent on Audible these days. This book gives you your money's worth & doesn't leave you feeling cheated like you only read the 1st half or quarter of what should've been the book. Thank You Mr. Ross for giving us a book we can sink our teeth into, that feels like a complete book (& not because it was stretched with meaningless filler - it's all meat)!
So happy to discover as I finished this the next in series is on sale so I snapped it up & didn't even cost me a credit (& the 3rd too)! Can't wait to start it!
Narrator did a great job & was easy to listen to. Characters were easy to tell apart, no monotonous droning here, you get a good read, allowing you to enjoy the story!

Chaney fan
Revisado: 05-12-23
I enjoy Most of Chaney’s series, including this one. Looking forward to the next book. Also like the Sol Arbitator series, on book 4 of that before I return to the next of this one. Try to wait for sales as his books are TOO short IMO. Every 6 hr book seems like 1/2 of a 12 hr book, which used to be more the norm, but nowadays everything, just keeps getting smaller for the same price. As in the supermarket, so it is everywhere else, books no exception, sadly, authors have to eat too.
Narrator is great, as always.
NOTE TO AUDIBLE: it’s really annoying we can no longer Rate a book without writing a review. I don’t always have time for that, most often, don’t and I use my star ratings to tell if I’ve read the book before as I’ve read so many I can’t remember everything & Audible has a habit of deleting my history (possibly everytime I have to change an email address?) & I wind up rebuying books I’ve already read. Having a star rating is a quick & easy way to assess what I’ve read in a series. I don’t know why you insist we have to write reviews now of so many words, unless you want authors to have less ratings. Authors, please complain to Audible about this as they’re hurting your sales by doing this. Many times when I finish a book I’m not in a position where I can stop to do a review but can give a star rating. It’s not fair to either of us to have the ability removed! I encourage other readers to voice their complains regarding this too.
