It might have been good if the narrator had not made the story sound like a low budget soap opera.

Historia
A mid-air collision in the Alaskan wilderness between two small aircraft leaves ten people dead. Was it a bird strike, pilot error...or premeditated murder? Then an eleventh body is found in the wreckage: a man shot gangland style, twice in the chest and once in the head. In an investigation that reaches to the highest levels of government, justice may not be served, but Kate Shugak is determined that the truth will out, even at the risk of her life and the lives of those she loves most.

Leave the politics at home
Revisado: 04-25-23
I’ve read every Kate Shugak book to date and have liked them all,but I didn’t even finish this one. Firstly, it started slow to the point that i scratched my head as to where it was going
Finally, after the plane crash and you begin to piece together all the various and sundry characters, the locals, the FBI, the pilots & the gun toting racist, we get to Kate & what she does best. Solve mysteries. Only this time the author introduces politics into it, to the point of leaving innuendo or metaphor out, and gives us names and labels.
For me, it’s getting old! I’ve noticed more authors lately are starting to interject their political views in a very obvious way, much like Hollywood actors are. I stopped watching much TV because I was disgusted with it. I read & listen to A LOT of books to escape all the negative politics & riots & other nonsense on TV these days.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a book that makes me think & ask questions. One that’s so well researched the I’ve gone to the computer or library to look it up just to educate myself. Such as Barbara Kingsolver’s Poisonwood Bible or Sara Donati’s Into the Wilderness series. However, encourage a person to think & ask questions, don’t give me your opinions and ideologies.

Excellent “storyteller”
Revisado: 03-01-23
But… I liked it & would recommend it, with one caveat, it was a bit implausible. Just a bit too many misunderstandings, too many questionable motives & too much guilt. Although, it was entertaining enough that if you can overlook that, you’ll definitely enjoy it.

Historia
Viktor Orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. Once Russia’s richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in London, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the Kremlin. His mansion in Chelsea’s exclusive Cheyne Walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in London. Yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, Russia’s vengeful president finally manages to cross Orlov’s name off his kill list.

Where is Daniel Silva?
Revisado: 07-17-21
So disheartened, this is the first of his books I could barely make it thru. Took forever to get to the point of the story. Then when it did, poof, the next you know it turns into a diatribe on American politics & Mr. Silva’s opinion on Russia-Gate. If I wanted that I’d turn on the TV. The point of fictional books is to escape all that, I read non-fiction to research facts. Regardless of what my personal beliefs are, I don’t want my favorite Authors & characters giving me their opinions.

I have enjoyed Ms Maas’s previous YA books yet I just could not get into this. It felt like reading a grade school book, then they added some fowl language and romance, then called it adult.

Revisado: 08-30-17
I listen to A Lot of audiobooks, so it takes something special for me to rave about it. When I listened to to first one, I did just that. RAVED, to anyone who would listen. This book, the second in The Licanius Trilogy, did not disappoint. It was just as good as the first. It was well paced, never boring and considering the large cast of characters, that's amazing!

I Tried, I Really Tried
Revisado: 09-23-15
I really anticipated this book but, I ended up being so disappointed! It just dragged and dragged to the point, I ended up speeding thru just to get to the end.
Lisbeth and Mikail were just plain boring. I'm not good at writing reviews so I don't know any other way to say it. I kept waiting for them to come out of their shell and show us those same characters I was so addicted to in the last 3 books, and it just never happened.
Also, all the tech stuff about A.I. was just confusing and it never really meshed with the final story line. The world lost a great author when Stieg Larsson passed ..... trying to fill those shoes just did not work.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Call me Plebeian, but...
Revisado: 07-01-15
Not quite sure what all the raving was about. Maybe I'm just not erudite enough...but there were an awfully lot of words coming from this whining kid, when half of them would have been sufficed.
Theo is supposed to be highly intelligent and sometimes you see that but, he is really slow on the "uptake". There were times I wanted to knock him in the head myself.....
I had to get halfway into the book, and I wanted to put it down several times, before it got interesting. Just too many words to say so little. Just a lot his rambling self indulgent thoughts. The whole last chapter is a good example, but I stayed with it just to see if he got out of his mess... but that's not for me to tell
