Virtual voice 2.5 and story 3.5

The narration sounds like a virtual voice. The tonal quality and expression are not too bad, actually, but the narration doesn’t add anything to the story experience. It is tolerable, not annoying, and allows readers to finish the story while doing other things. The female protagonist’s name is “Sabine” which pronounced as a German name, is Suh-BEA-nuh. The virtual voice pronounces it two or three different ways throughout the book. As a Kindle Unlimited subscriber, I like this option. However, the virtual voice is NOT a fitting replacement for a real, human voice actor. A human being adds interpretation and emotions to the story which is clearly lacking here.

As for the story, it is typical Jan Thompson. It is filled with scripture and meant to edify as well as entertain. The females are cool towards males, emotionally detached, and play hard to get. The males have different issues which are resolved through the books. Thompson resolves issues through Biblical ideals.

I liked this book a bit more than most of Sleeman’s other works I have read or listened to. I especially appreciated the good advice as characters worked through their issues.

I enjoyed learning a little about technology and weapons as well as investigative techniques. The book definitely had a lot of information that seemed plausible. It made me interested enough to look up information about things mentioned. “Smart” technology is still new but getting so much better so I know it is definitely going to change our lives in many positive and negative ways depending on the use. The book really made me think about this.

The thing I liked least was the predictable plot progression: heroine is attacked by bullet, heroine run off the road, heroine kidnapped, hero rescues her, someone is shot while the other keeps watch, both declare love after crisis is resolved. As I listened, I found myself wondering where / when the car accident would happen. Haha, I need to find a new genre, maybe Sci Fi or something.

I did like this book because it truly was uplifting, and I guess I needed some of the counseling sessions and hope it offered.

Wonderful book! It is a stand alone novel, but the characters were introduced in the previous book. Certain elements carried over so reading or listening to the previous story would help understanding this one, especially with Sergei and Elana’s story.

I loved hearing a bit about the Norwegian sagas and Norway. The reader did not distinguish much between the accents, however, so this one was not as well preformed as the last, but it was still a very good listen.

The book is about addictions to substances, work, and approval. Acker examines the psychology of this not in too much depth, but the pathology is definitely there. The characters are challenged to look at their motivations for doing the things they do, the habits they have formed, the groves they have dug for themselves which make it hard to change direction.

The book is also about two brothers at war with each other. Forgiveness is a central theme, not just between the brother, but the theme is also central to the characters as a whole. Adoptive parents must forgive and love troubled teens. Husband and wife must speak and hear truth from each other without becoming resentful. Elana must receive forgiveness and forgive herself. This a a well-crafted story with various layers.

The plot is exciting with a few twists that I did not see coming. The writing is engaging and intelligent. Faith is discussed in terms of reality, in light of how people actually behave, not just what they quote.

Both men and women will enjoy the work, especially fans of Crichton, Patterson and the like. 4.6 stars

I began reading this book on Kindle Unlimited. I liked it but then started the audio version which KU also allowed me to access. I loved the audio version because the reader performed the accents and characters so well.

Acker is an excellent author who goes beyond the plot and Bible quotations to bring meaning to story. His characters act out of recognizable pathos, in this case, the reality of death and courage in its face. There is no sermonizing, just agonizing thoughtfulness in circumstances we all might face.

Great book. I want to read / listen to #2 in the series.

Every book has characters and plot and setting, but not all writers make every word worth listening to. Heitzmann writes a great sentence. Her prose is worth the read and worth the listen; every word is a pleasure.

I liked the book and own the Kindle version. I wanted to listen because listening calls attention to things I glossed over when reading. The narrator is a good reader who interprets most parts well, but she did not do justice to characters’ voices. She sometimes uses the same intonation for different characters which makes listening a little confusing, and Hannah’s voice sounds too much like a child. This said, I still enjoyed the listen. The reader did a decent job otherwise.

The story has some horror / supernatural elements which add to the overall macabre atmosphere of the book at times, but these do not overshadow the characters’ development. There is an evil spirit which is malevolent but not really developed other than causing despair and destruction.

At its essence, the book is about healing after loss, experiencing grief, loving after loss, forgiveness, revenge, physical love in marriage, and new family. Both main characters have their secrets, or rather, they do not know each other that well and have to get to know each other little by little throughout the story. What seem like secrets are just them not really knowing each other. They don’t hold these against one another. Instead, they work out their relationship together by communicating both physically and verbally. They also work on themselves individually and internally with self- reflection. I liked how Morgan took the lead in this regard. The book gives a healthier view of relationships than most Christian romance fiction does.

The characters make each other better while also giving us something to ponder. One example is how differently each character views expensive clothes and food. Quinn looks at things one way, Morgan another. The book creatively calls attention to this in a manner that gets listeners thinking about their own reactions and relationships.

The book has some Biblical references and Christian themes. It seems roughly based on the story of Ruth, though it is neither allegorical nor a retelling of the story. Quinn gets a new name which also reminded me of Adam naming Eve. There are other things, but the book is structured to exemplify these kinds of themes without being preachy and overbearing. Overall, a great book & worth the read and listen.

This is psychological thriller was fun, and the reader was decent, providing a fun listen.

I like that the vocabulary is more sophisticated than other books in the genre. It makes for a better read / listen. I also liked the labyrinth symbolism of the book and supernatural aspect to the plot. Heitzmann tied the psychological problems of the female protagonist (Tessa) to her understanding of God in a believable manner, even though there were fantastic elements in story. If God is “Our Father in Heaven” then it makes sense that our understanding of God would be influenced by our experience with our own earthly father.

I purchased both the Audible and Kindle versions. I liked the listen, but really, the read was a better experience for me in some ways because reading naturally lends itself to more thoughtful interchange with the text. I actually learned a few new vocabulary words in this one. Kindle is great because it has that dictionary feature. I also enjoyed learning about how a labyrinth was used in Medieval worship. Now I want one of my own!

My only criticism is that the characters sometimes acted in a stupid manner which was not dealt with overtly enough. I think this especially about the mistakes of the doctor. It seemed to me that his nearly fatal mistakes should have generated a different response at the end, at least a more demonstrative and honest one on his part regarding his own failures which did real harm (lies, assumptions, misdiagnoses). Otherwise, the story’s resolution was believable and uplifting.

Both Tessa and Smith had to grow up a lot and start acting in a more mature manner relationship wise. Smith learned to be less selfish and more of a servant leader while Tessa had to learn how to verbalize the truth about her problems and feelings. Both had to learn to forgive and think of the other. These are real issues in relationships so I think there is value in the story beyond the fanciful fun the book provides.

I really enjoyed this book and own both the Audible and Kindle versions. I have listened to the book twice and read it twice. It is a continuation of the first in the series, but listeners/ readers do not have to experience the first book to understand. It works very well as a stand alone novel. I listened to Indelible first and like it better than the first.

As a teen, I read Mary Stewart books. Heitzmann writes somewhat in the same manner, using classic literature to add depth to the narrative, in this case, Paradise Lost. I enjoyed the structure of the story which draws parallels between the fall of mankind and Satan to the characters and plot of the book.

But at the heart of the novel are characters who have lost something or someone, sometimes due to their own mistakes and sins and sometimes due to the mistakes and sins of others. They all must find a way to rebuild their lives after great tragedy. In this, Heitzmann offers some insight that may comfort those who find themselves in difficult circumstances, which though presented in the novel’s fictional context, are not unlike what we experience in our own lives. The book is hopeful, uplifting, and real.

I like that the novel doesn’t wait until the last minute or use some grand gesture or cleared up misunderstanding to bring the couple together. Instead, we see a growing relationship as trust grows between the two. Trever and Natalie make a compelling case for love as they grow to find comfort and peace in one another.

The narrator is fantastic. I loved listening to her voice which is rich and full. She handles the prose and characterizations so well that I had to purchase the Audiobook myself instead of just listening to it on the Libby app on which my local library owns a copy.

Indelible is my favorite Heitzmann book so far. It is definitely worth the listen and purchase.

Hutchinson is one of my favorite readers. He does a fantastic job on this one. I liked this book the best so far of all Hannon’s books which I have listened to or read. What I liked most is that the judge cooperated with protection detail and the mistakes they made seem realistic. The villain seemed over the top, but he did have a partly believable story. It got a little far fetched towards the end, but I hung in there. I probably liked this story more because of the reader, but the protagonists seemed more real than other characters of books in this genre. I liked the main characters very much.

The reader made the story better first me. I liked the story, especially Mitch. I liked how his SEAL training factors into the story. But I did not like Alison very much because she was another heroine who had to prove her independence by being stupid, and the men have to come to her rescue. Why are women so dumb in these stories? If the author wants to prove independence, why do they make the women so dumb? Really annoying, especially because while the guy apologized for not being there for her, she doesn’t apologize for leaving without waiting like she promised. I liked the story, but this “strong, independent woman” that really means she is dumb really annoys me. The reader’s voice was very smooth, easy to listen to, though. So pretty good but could be better.

The story and characters are fun. The narrator is decent. The plot is melodramatic but entertaining. I like how the relationship develops without a lot of angst or secrets between the two as the story advances. I did not like being reminded every 30 minutes or so that the protagonists admired each other and wanted to be romantic but were not dating. The not dating part was interesting because they really were sharing their hearts and minds while not being physically involved. It was dating just without any intimacy. I did like the book; I just thought it was a little too long in the middle. The end was only slightly rushed but did put a lot of detail in two short end chapters. I guess I liked the story because of the banter between the male & female protagonists. They were cute, and it made the story fun.
