Counting the Cost
Revisado: 03-07-25
8 women saved by fath and moved by a love for their country have dedicated their lives to share the gospel to the lost. I was struck by their youth as many were only in their teens. Hearing the story of Gladys Staines made me think of Elisabeth Elliot. Inspirational story!

Historia
In the northernmost reaches of Scotland, where a string of little islands in the North Sea stretches towards Norway, lives Gertie MacIntyre, a proud island girl by birth. Her social circle is small but tight: family and friends, particularly the women in her knitting circle. In the whitewashed cottages of their hometown, everyone knows everyone, and the ladies of the knitting circle know more than most. In a place of long dark winters and geographic isolation, the knitting circle is a precious source of gossip, home, laughter, and comfort for them all.

I love a knitting story
Revisado: 01-23-25
Tha narrator had the accents down, but Ian & Struen sounded alike. The story had a coming of age thread and Gertie went from a timid shop girl to a woman living her dream

Forgiveness Yields freedom
Revisado: 12-04-24
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from Mahtob's perspective of the life she lived in Iran. I was distressed that so much hatred has darkened her 6 year old heart. Mahtob's teacher was perceptive enough to see what was happening and steered her toward forgiving her dad.
Mahtob Mamoody is a well-adjusted woman. She is proud of her Persian heritage (I would love a dinner invitation!). Her dad would have been proud.

What a testimony !
Revisado: 10-13-24
Darlene Deibler Rose's ministry & suffering is evidence of the all-sufficient grace & love God has for His children. I am inspired to renew my commitment to Christ and to prayer after hearing her story
This book has me wondering if the Deiblers' ministry connected with Don Richardson's ministry in Peace Child or Lords of the Earth. We also support the Gibellos who are working in August New Guinea among the Moka people.

Joe Kenda investigated 387 murder cases during his 23 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department and solved almost all of them. And he is ready to detail the cases that are too gruesome to air on television, cases that still haunt him, and the few cases where the killer got away. These cases are horrifyingly real, and the detail is so mesmerizing you won't be able to turn it off.

Historia
Is Italian olive oil really Italian, or are we dipping our bread in lamp oil? Why are we masochistically drawn to foods that can hurt us, like hot peppers? Far from being a classic American dish, is apple pie actually...English? Matt Siegel sets out “to uncover the hidden side of everything we put in our mouths”. Siegel also probes subjects ranging from the myths - and realities - of food as aphrodisiac, to how one of the rarest and most exotic spices in all the world (vanilla) became a synonym for uninspired sexual proclivities.

Food not as labeled
Revisado: 02-23-24
The topic was interesting, but I preferred Cooked & The secret life of groceries. I was disappointed & alarmed to know that fishmongers & grocers cheat the public by adding water to increase weight. Restaurants presumably bait & switch lobster, for example, with less expensive seafood. If true, don't order lobster or anything else for that matter.
Seems we are being cheated or are food is trying to kill us. Even vitamins are suspect.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

As always Grisham wove a story with a few twists that kept me guessing. The only flaw was that it ended. Michael Beck is a great narrator. His smooth voice and ability to add accents is unsurpassed.

Historia
From the plains of ancient Mesopotamia to the rolling hills of medieval England to the vast sheep farms of modern-day Australia, sheep have been central to the human story. Starting with our Neolithic ancestors' first forays into sheep-rearing nearly 10,000 years ago, these remarkable animals have fed us, clothed us, changed our diet and languages, helped us to win wars, decorated our homes and financed the conquest of large swathes of the earth.

Knitter, spinster, lover of all things wool
Revisado: 10-31-22
The book is short, but by no means lacking on history, humor, and trivia regarding wool, sheep and the necessity for humans to keep warm.
Very interesting history of the British wool industry crossing over to the colonies. Seems that if all the restrictions placed on the colonists nothing enraged them more than restrictions on wool.
I am happy that the author dispelled the common myths that Ganseys, Aran, & Icelandic sweaters and Scottish tartans are ancient designs passed down for generations. They are more likely the fabrication of clever marketers wanting to lure tourists into the various shops in Dublin, Glasgow, and London.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Revisado: 10-26-22
What a fascinating trip to an understanding where and how English developed!! I love John's humorous hyperbole.
I was particularly interested in creole languages and was disappointed when John didn't mention Acadian and its influence in Louisiana Creole
I have to be honest and say I was taken aback at hearing ASL classified as an artificial language. After working at NTID (Institute for the Deaf), I have developed a love for ASL as a language with all the complexities and nuances.
Great course, just remember that the audio version cannot replace the video and the lecturer must remember that we can't see him.

Historia
On June 25, 1973, a seven-year-old girl went missing from the Montana campground where her family was vacationing. Somebody had slit open the back of their tent and snatched her from under their noses. None of them saw or heard anything. Susie Jaeger had vanished into thin air, plucked by a shadow. As days stretched into weeks, and weeks into months, Special Agent Pete Dunbar attended a workshop at FBI Headquarters in Quantico, Virgina, led by two agents who had hatched a radical new idea: What if criminals left a psychological trail that would lead us to them?

The Shadow: Hiding in Plain Sight
Revisado: 10-15-22
I had not heard of these cases probably because of the location 3K miles away. That made this book so fascinating and maybe because I have a 5 year old granddaughter.
Other reviewers have started this book isn't about profiling. I couldn't disagree more. Patrick Mullany and Howard Teten used what they knew of others efforts: Jack the Ripper, the Mad Bomber, Much of the book explained how profiling pointed directly to Meyerhoffer. The afterward went further to explain how the BSU had grown over the years. Today, FBI agents have thousands of cases and interviews to assist them in developing a profile for a particular UnSub.
