I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me to the point of obsession.

Eight true crime stories of murder and mayhem. In my first audiobook as a true crime author I've started with a few of the stories that have haunted me for some time. Some of these stories are unbelievable in their brutality while others are astounding in the stupidity of the killers. This collection of stories are from all around the globe and have no common thread between them other than that they are both thought provoking and disturbing. The stories included in this anthology are dark and creepy and will leave you with a new understanding of just how fragile the human mind can be.

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

Lurking beneath the progressive activism and sex positivity in the 1970 to '80s, a dark undercurrent of violence rippled across the American landscape. With reported cases of sexual assault and homicide on the rise, the FBI created a specialized team - the “Mindhunters”, better known as the Behavioral Science Unit - to track down the country's most dangerous criminals. And yet narrowing down a seemingly infinite list of potential suspects seemed daunting at best and impossible at worst - until Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess stepped on the scene.

Historia
The Anatomy of Motive offers a dramatic, insightful look at the development and evolution of the criminal mind. The famed former chief of the FBI's Investigative Support Unit, John Douglas was the pioneer of modern behavioral profiling of serial criminals. Working again with acclaimed novelist, journalist, and filmmaker Mark Olshaker, and using cases from his own fabled career as examples, Douglas takes us further than ever before into the dark corners of the minds of arsonists, hijackers, bombers, poisoners, serial killers, and mass murderers.

Worshippers stream out of an Midwestern synagogue after sabbath services, unaware that only a hundred yards away, an expert marksman and avowed racist, antisemite and member of the Ku Klux Klan, patiently awaits, his hunting rifle at the ready. A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign.

In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Excellent!!!
Being somebody that has almost all the true crime audiobooks that's available this is one of my favorites. This audiobook will hold your attention all the way through. Nothing in this book rehashes like a lot of them do mostly for filler. I listen to this book all the way through while driving. And will probably listen to it again in the near future. Joe Kenda did an excellent job narrating his own book. If you like True crime and nonfiction you will not be disappointed.

The review title says it. If you enjoy the show Homicide Hunter you will enjoy the book. I feel it is best enjoyed when read by Joe Kenda himself!

No-Nonsense, Joe Kenda
I've watched ID tv, and found retired Lt. Joe Kenda to be refreshingly charismatic and no-nonsense, with his sprinkles of 'cop' humor and wit. When I discovered he had a book coming out, that he was also narrating, I bought it the day it became available and immediately started listening to it. Kenda touches base on various points in his life: generalizing his childhood (which wasn't terribly pleasant according to him), how he went about becoming a cop, his marriage and kids, his parenting style, as well as [of course] going over his career in law enforcement, investigating and (most of the time) solving homicides for the Colorado Springs PD, decades before DNA forensics was a thing.
Overall the book is entertaining IF you are into the life and times of a homicide detective. It is not light, carefree listening. It IS a bluntly told outline of many cases Kenda was involved in with some moments of humor. No real trigger warnings here people. If you are not into solving crimes and hearing about the detailed gore of a crime scene in real life, no the Hollywood glamourized version thereof, why would you ever listen/read a book written by a homicide detective? Kenda is pragmatic and unforgiving when it comes to criminals, negligent parents, as well as temperamental children (as the man was a school bus driver for a while after he retired from law enforcement).

Awesome book! The only complaint I have is that I wish it was longer. With that being said, I want to thank Lt. Kenda for sharing his story with us. I am recommending this book to my family and friends. 😀

Stellar! Lt.Kenda has an impressively vast base of knowledge and organizes it very well here. He challenged what I thought I knew concerning Cadaveric Spasm; I may not be "sold" yet, but he has certainly provided me a new "chunk" to "chew" for awhile. Who could ask for anything more?!

Love kenda
Great book, as in the series based on reality, he relays his life experiences as only he can. also speaks about his passed demons, as they follow him in retirement, I'm glad that he's found a little mental box to put them in to live the rest of his life, as one worth living! thank you for all that you done and continue to do..love the down to earth book!

Love Joe Kenda
I watched the TV show
Joe Kenda stars in.
His stories and his delivery of the spoken words area
fresh, sometimes sarcasticly funny, and exciting.
His book is even better.
So interesting, and love his narration.
Will listen to it again and again.
