WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU LIED? The first lie: MONSTERS DON’T EXIST. When the body of a man is discovered in the Boston Common, Martina finds herself entering a horrific nightmare. She discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of ancient methods of persecution being carried out by a Puritan-indoctrinated serial killer who believes the devil walks among us. The second lie: YOU WOULD KNOW A MONSTER IF YOU SAW ONE. After the first victim is dismissed as gang-related, Martina fears there is more to the murder than meets the eye. Her instincts are soon proven correct when another...

it had a few twists to the story and the use of scriptures

Great story, awful narration!
Revisado: 01-19-25
Birgitte Märgen skillfully cites scripture from the Geneva Bible and weaves in stories from the Salem witch trials, bridging present-day crimes with those of the past and offering rich context for the ritualistic killings that echo Puritan doctrine.
If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers, police procedurals, and historical crime, I highly recommend checking this one out.
The narration almost ruined this for me. I understand the economic benefits of using virtual voices, but this was not the book for it! Each chapter starts with an abbreviation for the word "chapter," followed by a Roman numeral. It’s like someone just spitting out random letters of the alphabet. The Bostonian accent was incredibly hard to follow—at least, I assume that’s what it was. I’d much rather pay for an audiobook with a narrator who enhances the story and brings it to life.

Historia
After a personal tragedy and professional scandal forces homicide detective Vanessa Castro out of Seattle, she takes a new job in Seaside, Washington, determined to make a fresh start. The small beach town, best known for its popular amusement park, Wonderland, seems like the perfect place to raise her young son and teenage daughter. But it's not that easy starting over, especially as the town's new Deputy Chief of Police. When a dead body turns up at the park her first day on the job, and then a teenage Wonder Worker goes missing, Vanessa's investigation is met with resistance.

wonderfully atmospheric and creepy
Revisado: 01-15-25
Vanessa is a wonderfully flawed character, and the combination of seeing her in action while also getting insights from her daughter Ava adds great depth to her character development. I was delighted when a character from a previous series made an appearance, further enriching the story. Jennifer Hillier never fails to surprise me; just when I think I have it figured out, the reveals and betrayals cut deep. This is a perfect read for the spooky season—a police procedural filled with plenty of unsettling elements and truly unexpected twists! Highly recommend!

Brilliant!!
Revisado: 01-15-25
What a brilliant read! It started off like your classic domestic suspense but quickly took off in directions you’d never expect.
As the layers of the story are peeled back and shocking inconsistencies emerge, I was on the edge of my seat! Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the plot veered in another unexpected direction. This is truly the definition of an unpredictable page-turner. I’m so glad I already have another David Ellis book lined up!

Historia
On a spring afternoon in Athens, Georgia, Ethan Haddock is discovered in his apartment, dead, apparently by his own hand. His fatality immediately garners media attention: not because his death reflects the troubling increase of depression and mental health issues among college students, but because the media has caught the whiff of a scandal. His professor, Dr. Verena Sobek, has been taken in for questioning, and there are rumors his death is the result of a bad romance.

slow burn dark academia
Revisado: 01-15-25
I enjoyed the multiple points of view through which the story is told. They enrich the characters and provide the reader with compelling backstory. While the book is undeniably a slow burn, Lauren Nossett includes enough clues to help you guess the guilty party.
The final twist was fantastic though!
If you’re looking for a moody, dark academia mystery, this might be the one for you!

Historia
A psychopath is terrorizing Copenhagen. His calling card is a “chestnut man” - a handmade doll made of matchsticks and two chestnuts - which he leaves at each bloody crime scene. Examining the dolls, forensics makes a shocking discovery - a fingerprint belonging to a young girl, a government minister’s daughter who had been kidnapped and murdered a year ago. A tragic coincidence - or something more twisted? To save innocent lives, a pair of detectives must put aside their differences to piece together the Chestnut Man’s gruesome clues.

Nordic noir perfection!!
Revisado: 01-15-25
This novel is Nordic Noir at its finest, featuring a brooding atmosphere, dark narratives, and flawed protagonists. It starts a bit slowly as we’re introduced to the characters and their backstories. Naia Thulin, a young detective, is looking to transfer out of homicide to the cyber crimes unit, which offers better funding and promises a brighter career. Mark Hess, a burned-out Europol investigator, has been temporarily reassigned to the homicide squad in Copenhagen while awaiting review of his most recent Europol case. The unlikely pair doesn’t have much in common, except that they both prefer to conduct investigations independently. Arguably, this lack of teamwork leads to some terrible consequences before they finally realize they make an effective team.
The plot is intricate, with many moving pieces—this is definitely a story that demands your full attention. Sveistrup delivers excellent twists and turns, all building to a suspenseful final reveal that’s well worth the wait.
The ending doesn’t quite tie up all loose ends, leaving room for a sequel to explore Thulin and Hess working together from the start... Wishful thinking?

The queens of domestic thrillers have done it again! It’s a twisty, small-town suspense where nothing is as it seems, and no one is who they appear to be—plus, the final reveal is perfect.

not as marketed...
Revisado: 01-15-25
The story begins as a mystery, told through three distinctive points of view. It’s clear the novel is character-driven, yet, I didn’t connect with any of them. We learn about Vanessa’s life through memories, diaries, and, of course, her art.
At one point, the focus on character development shifts into a deep study of human nature. For a time, I wondered if the mystery was still part of the story at all—until the final reveal and the rather unsatisfying ending. That said, if past behavior is any indication of future behavior, readers can guess where things are headed.
Based on the marketing and Paula Hawkins’ previous work, I had expected a thrilling mystery filled with twisty characters. The Blue Hour is not that story. The pacing felt drawn out at times, only for the ending to arrive so abruptly that it left many questions unanswered.
As a story about unrequited love, loneliness, desperation, and betrayal, it’s quite good. I just wish that had been made clear to readers from the start.

Addictive!!
Revisado: 01-15-25
This book might have it all: organized crime, legal procedures, undercover missions, national security threats, corporate espionage, and even some romance. If you’re wondering how all of that fits into a single story, let me tell you—the twists and turns gave me whiplash! There was no guessing where Leo was headed in this crazy tale—I kept trying and failing. Thankfully, the chapters were short, because I rewound a few times to make sure I heard correctly.
The plot David Ellis delivers is fast-paced and action-packed, yet incredibly intricate! I highly recommend this if you enjoy twisty thrillers. Absolutely addictive!

a little too over-the-top...
Revisado: 01-15-25
This sounded like the perfect domestic / psychological thriller, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. However, as we start to learn more about the Doughertys' marriage, I quickly realized the plot was taking some unexpected turns that eventually led to over-the-top reveals. The final chapters were so far-fetched, they bordered on the ridiculous!

My husband is dead. I attended his funeral. I watched his casket be lowered six feet into the ground. (Actually, it may have been only five feet, but that still seems like more than enough.) And then we ate an array of finger sandwiches and deviled eggs and miniature beef wellingtons that cost more than my first car. My point is, Grant is gone. And so are all his many, many deep, dark secrets which I never really ever bothered to ask him about. He is never coming back.

Why the hype?

Perhaps I had set my expectations too high after all the hype this book generated. I didn’t find it utterly addictive or unputdownable. If anything, it left me with utter disbelief and buyer’s remorse.
