Not What I Was Looking For
Revisado: 02-11-25
I am sure this is a good book and I am just being picky.
I am not sure why I was expecting more life drama than medical/lab/corporate drama. It's not like the synopsis lead me astray.
I wasn't hooked. I found myself delaying on reading more and the only reason I can think of is because I didn't care more about the characters.
Honestly, if it sounds like a fun book, read it. It is fun. It's just not the fun I was looking for, which isn't fair to the book but it's the honest truth.

Historia
Someone you know or even love is the person who will kill you. Usually, that’s true. But that is not what happened in 2018 to two college students in Iowa. Two young women who had everything to live for, were killed by two men with nothing to lose. Completely random attacks. Neither case had anything else in common except they both shocked the nation and even the world. What’s worse, being murdered by a loved one or a stranger who jumps out of the bushes when you are most vulnerable? Previously published as We’ll Find You and Let’s Do Murder, The Iowa Murders tells the shocking true...

Disjointed and Unfocused
Revisado: 01-23-25
I expected something this short to be more essay style and frankly, I wish it had been. It was disjointed and there were times when it dragged because it seemed like we were circling back over and over to the issues that had more to do with how these murders were used by the public than the murders themselves. I also wish we could have had more information about who the victims were as people. There were tidbits but I wanted more because I felt like the most we learned about them is how the loss of them affected others than the people themselves.
The back cover does more for this book than the book does for itself as far as interest.
The issue of how the media and the public handles murder is an interesting one in itself, but that is not what I came into this book wanting to know more about. If that is the subject matter the author wanted to stress, I wish he lead with that.

After a devastating loss, Brynn Wilder escapes to Wharton, a tourist town on Lake Superior, to reset, and checks into a quaint boardinghouse. In her fellow lodgers, she finds a friendly company of strangers: the frail Alice, cared for by a married couple with a heartbreaking story of their own; LuAnn, the eccentric and lovable owner of the inn; and Dominic, an unsettlingly handsome man inked from head to toe in mesmerizing tattoos. But in this inviting refuge, a mystery begins to swirl. Alice knows things about Brynn, about all of them, that she shouldn’t.

Gut Wrenching and Beautiful
Revisado: 01-23-25
A three star review for what is probably a well deserving five star book feels almost criminal, but I need to counter balance the fact that this is a beautifully written book with the fact that I cannot finish it.
Wendy Webb writes gorgeous prose. Her mastery of the feel of the north shore along Lake Superior is unmatched. This book is no exception. Her characters are always well thought out and her ideas are always inspired. She has a way of making you feel the book, the whole book. Her books are truly sensational and this one is no exception.
Unfortunately for me, this one is a deep dive into grief, loss, and impending loss that I was not prepared for. I think I got myself sunk into the other aspects of the description and maybe they come up later in the book as being more prominent, but at the point where I needed to stop, the book was full on nostalgia, loss, and impending grief that I am just not in a place that I can handle right now.
I cried and I was forced to think about impending loss and there is always so much impending loss in life. It’s a little too much for me right now with everything else I have to cry over in life, let alone personally confronting the inevitable right now when I don’t actually have to right this moment. It’s just a little too overwhelming for my psyche right now.
If you are interested in this book and you can handle a gut-wrenching story (or at least a section that I couldn’t not surpass, I’m sorry), then please read this book. It was beautiful as far as I got into it, which was roughly 7 chapters of 41. It is incredibly worthwhile. I’m just weak af.

Historia
Joe Goldberg is ready for a change. Instead of selling books, he’s writing them. And he’s off to a good start. Glenn Shoddy, an acclaimed literary author, recognizes Joe’s genius and invites him to join a tight-knit writing fellowship at Harvard. Finally, Joe will be in a place where talent matters more than pedigree . . . where intellect is the great equalizer and anything is possible. Even happy endings. Or so he thinks, until he meets his already-published, already-distinguished peers, who all seem to be cut from the same elitist cloth.

I’m so glad I read this book. I’ve loved this whole series. It’s been a wild ride and I’m genuinely a little sad that I’m caught up now.
Joe always fascinates me and some of the side characters really caught my attention. Once again, I didn’t love his love interest but that’s okay. Sometimes that can be part of their charm.
I enjoyed the deep dive into writing groups and early publishing hopes and dreams. I really loved the way the story circled back to metaphors with new light and new meaning every so often. I loved seeing the beginning and end of a relationship of Joe’s that pushed the boundaries and really delved into his psyche. These are excellent books and I loved this addition to the series.
I really, truly hope there’s more to come.

Atmosphere
Revisado: 09-12-24
I genuinely loved this book. I was not super into the ending but that doesn't erase the fact that this was such a good read. I loved the atmosphere the book provided. I enjoyed most of the characters. I found myself wanting to read more when I wasn't reading. Best of all, I actually got the creeps before bed from it once. That is not normal for me. I read lots of horror. I watch lots of horror. I can enjoy a horror book or movie and go right to sleep if I want. The vibes early on in this book actually creeped me out for real a little and that makes it gold in my mind.

Historia
My family has always found me lacking. From the way I dress, how I look, to the type of magic I have. My family name is full of pomp and prestige, and I want nothing to do with it. I’m a witch that knows how to set a goal and I have one in mind. I want a real family. It seems too good to be true that I can give the list of traits I want in a partner and have my deepest desire answered, but I’m out of options. From the very first moment I meet Elliot Bramblewick, I have hope. But he’s tricky. I’m not expecting him to be hiding two other mates.

Surprisingly Sweet
Revisado: 06-15-24
I enjoyed this book and I do intend to read more of Lillian Lark's books. This was fun. I was such a relief for the female mc to be a bigger girl and she was very cute. The gargoyles were fun. i enjoyed the characters. I do wish there was more Theo. He kind of felt like a plot device and I wanted him to be more of a threat.
All in all, it's a very fun book. I'm glad I read it. Considering I struggle to read romance, due to personal issues, I think finding this was a delight I really needed.

No Sleep
Revisado: 02-23-24
This is an excellent No Sleep story.
I enjoyed it. I love psychology and scary stories.
There is quite a bit of that Reddit story time feel to this. If I am not reading books, I listen to true crime podcasts and listen to reddit scary stories. This book has that vibe of being written by someone who has read a lot of SCPs and really likes their old timey, captain's log kind of doctors who are somehow young but just as comfortable as inserts into games like Fallout or Bioshock.
I am not saying that is a bad thing but when you know the pattern popular No Sleep stories tend to take, you will know the pattern for this book.
The characters are interesting. The monster is interesting in theory but a little underwhelming as a genuine character. The characters are a little cliche ..... and I still loved it.
It was very fun. I was always happy to get to jump back into the story and I am glad I read it.

Not my favorite in the series but still very fun
Revisado: 02-15-24
I loved this book. It was so fun to read. Listening to this person's thoughts and how they twist everything is so wild. I just loved it.
The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I wasn't really as invested in MaryKay as I wanted to be. She DID become more interesting as the book went on but it took a while for her to get there.
It's still an excellent read.

I really enjoyed this book. I am a fan of the show so I was dreading Joe meeting Love. In the show, they seem perfect for one another. In this book, it is so much more complex. I loved how this story made me think and I genuinely need to get the next book ASAP.

In the tourist town of Wharton, on the coast of Lake Superior, Tess Bell is renovating her old family home into a bed-and-breakfast during the icy dead of winter… As the house’s restoration commences, a shuttered art studio is revealed. Inside are paintings Tess’s late grandfather, beloved and celebrated artist Sebastian Bell, hid away for generations. But these appear to be the works of a twisted mind, almost unrecognizable as paintings she and others familiar with his art would expect.

Horror Hallmark
Revisado: 11-22-23
This is a beautiful book.
It is not Wendy Webb's best work or a masterpiece, but it's fun, cozy, and interesting. I am a big fan of her work. Everything I've read by her has been lovely. She does this gorgeous, gothic ambience that takes you right to Lake Superior's shores. I love Lake Superior. Her work is the sweet embrace of that place, the home I've never lived in and always long to see.
This book still delivers that kind of magic but it's not always as strong as it can be in her other works. It's the Hallmark-Movie-esc romance moments and the cliches that make it less than perfect...
but those moments also make the book intetesting and unique.
This book is like if you mashed Hallmark and a decent horror ghost story together and told them to make it work.
It does work. I like the juxtaposition of it all but I genuinely think she could also do better.
Anyway, I liked the characters and the mystery. I liked the cute romance even though that isn't my usual cup of tea. I really enjoyed the book. I love how it made me feel.
Best of all, I enjoyed thinking about the book.
The ending was a little abrupt. I think this work could have used more polishing but who am I to say that? It's a good book and I'm glad I read it.
