Historia
Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: To write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th Century.

The book has so many layers. Worth every minute. I found it surprisingly enlightening, too. Fabulous narration.

The best of the series
Revisado: 04-09-25
This is a true stand alone read. You can start here, which just speaks to how well it is written. A few references to prior books but a first time reader wouldn’t notice the need for background. One of Cowley’s best yet.

Historia
Hazel Hart was a successful romance novelist until a breakup drives her straight into writer’s block. Having failed (and failed some more) to deliver her new manuscript, she’s hiding from the world behind a wall of old takeout containers until her publisher lays down the law. If she misses her next deadline it’s The End. Desperate for inspiration, Hazel impulse-buys a historic home online and flees Manhattan to tiny Story Lake, PA. Upon her dramatic arrival—involving an incident with a bald eagle—she discovers the charm of her new home may have been slightly exaggerated.

Laugh out loud funny but not silly. This is my very favorite since Forever Never, which is still my No. 1. ☝️ Reading again now.

Historia
Damien had been listening to all of my phone sessions with my therapist. The sexy artist next door now knew all of my deepest secrets and insecurities. We got to talking. He set me straight with tips to get over my breakup. He became a good friend, but Damien made it clear that he couldn’t be anything more. Problem was, I was falling hard for him anyway. And as much as he pushed me away, I knew he felt the same…because his heartbeat didn’t lie.

Good read
Revisado: 02-25-25
More references than most on religious faith. Otherwise, a great, easy, sweet read. The narrator is a little whinny and weak sounding to me. This character wasn’t that weak so the voice didn’t match exactly.

A great romantic ride. Nice twists and turns. The best is that they are a team from almost the beginning. Love that as compared to unnecessary handwringing. 🤜 🤛

Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

Historia
Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

Beautifully written. The landscape is as much a character as the cast of townsfolk. Pearls of wisdom and introspection abound. Very much looking forward to the next in the series.

Historia
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Troubling and Inflicts Distress
Revisado: 04-15-24
Do not read this book if you are dealing with any mental health issues, unless you have undergone therapy and presently have access to therapy. The attempt to simulate the long periods of hopelessness and the constant feeling of being overwhelmed is achieved here by chapters 5-48 being a long melancholy slog. If you are in a very good place and wish to understand the experience of others dealing with PTSD, then this is a clinical road map thru the dark. The “light” however is relegated to the last 5 mins of the last chapter and the epilogue. Hardly a meaningful reward. This is a tragic romance with a bit of phoenix from the ashes. As long as you realize that, then proceed. Otherwise, read Abby’s first four books of this informal series, with the fourth being the best.

⚠️ WARNING
Revisado: 04-09-24
I read romance novels to lift my mood and tamp down anxiety. I only read those that are romantic comedies when I am looking for this sort of medicine for the soul - no complex Womens fiction or “tearjerkers”. So beware that 1/3 of this book is super tough. It ends wonderfully, but if you are in a vulnerable spot, you might want to put this on the shelf for a better day. I was planning on giving the book ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ until I made it through the end, which was beautiful and joyous. Persevere, if you can because it is worth it. I checked when the book got into the thick of things and “tearjerker” is the sixth tagged descriptive and I have to arrow down to see it. I recommend this author (who always has a real traumatic event in every book) flag for romance readers those that are this cataclysmic. The book should not be read if you are in a trying place.
