Some profanity, but much less than other books, which I appreciated!
Revisado: 02-12-25
I really enjoyed this book! I felt the characters were well rounded, and I had a sense of who each of them were, which made me care about each of them. Yes, the topic is sensitive, but I felt the author did a commendable job of not becoming gratuitous. What I found most interesting, was how she took us deep into the inner workings of a survivor’s mind: both the one who tried desperately to assimilate into normalcy, and the other who seemed destined to repeat the sins of his father, though in a less horrific way. It showed the human side of monsters, which I found fascinating, since most of us have good and bad lurking deep within us. I also appreciated that the profanity that was present, did not seem to be gratuitous, but rather utterances that would normally occur from someone in distress, or someone who was just plain wired wrong. But like I say, it never became gratuitous. I despise lazy writing, and I find authors who rely on gratuitous sex, and vulgarity to be lazy and uninspired writers. So I appreciate, and really enjoyed this work , above and beyond her deeply intriguing and moving story! I highly recommend it!

Not a lot of profanity, which is a good thing these days.
Revisado: 02-12-25
I appreciated that there was not a lot of foul language, and the story was engaging enough to keep me listening, but this was not my favorite storyline. I could recommend it, though for me, it’s not one I would listen to again. It was great for a one time listen.

Too much vulgarity and graphic violence
Revisado: 12-05-24
I have read books from this author before, and I enjoyed them, but this one was just over the top with the F bombs, and graphic detail of murder. I thought perhaps once I moved past the prologue, it would get better. Sadly, no. The first chapter had flashbacks of the gooey-flesh-blob gore, and the arrival of yet another character with the liberal use of F bombs. it was an odd choice to have an on-duty police officer speak this way. I’m neither a prude nor squeamish, but this just seemed over the top, and I have to draw the line somewhere. I cannot speak to anything else, because I couldn’t get past the first chapter.

Vulgarity ruined an otherwise good story
Revisado: 09-19-24
The narrator was adept at capturing the various accents, and I thought she portrayed the characters perfectly. I thought the story was engaging as well, and while I guessed the end of the plot about 3/4 of the way through, that didn’t bother me. What did bother me, where the many F bombs. It just wasn’t necessary. I thought the writer had talent, but to me, overused vulgarity just ruins what could be a great story— it wreaks of an undeveloped mind. Too bad. Had it not been for the foul language, I would be searching out other titles by this author.

Historia
Two estranged sisters, Lillian and Adelia, struggle to come to terms after the mother they've believed to be dead for the past 15 years actually passes away. Confused and in shock, they travel together to the isolated village of their childhood to claim the farm that was passed on to them. There’s comfort in returning to this place of their birth, where a simpler, rustic life feels possible - but the sisters quickly realize that something is very wrong with the village and that their mother was hiding more than they could have ever imagined.

Interesting short story!
Revisado: 10-12-23
Just enough of the paranormal to surprise me and keep me guessing. Well written, and a bit of lyrical flair. I enjoyed this little thriller, and I appreciated the lack of vulgarity. That’s rare these days. Narrator did a fairly good job as well. It’s always weird to listen to women try and do older men’s voices, but she did her best, and was certainly not a failure by any means. Nice, all around!

Lyrical, captivating, and well thought out.
Revisado: 04-08-23
As a lyricist, I really appreciated the artistic ability of this author, and how she was able to color the narration in a way that made the emotions and the scenery multi-dimensional. I really appreciated the lack of vulgarity, as this seems to be a rare ability to write without it, these days. It takes talent to be able to write a thrilling and difficult story, such as this, without resorting to graphic language or overly sexual depiction’s. I cared about the characters, and felt I really got to know them. It was also like walking through the past with all the 70’s references I remember quite well as a child. The idea of underground tunnels, connecting a community, was really exciting, and it made me want to fly to my keyboard to google the setting. Overall, I really enjoyed this work, and look forward to checking out other titles from this talented author.
I reduced one star for the narration – – which I thought was quite good – – – excepting the speed with which the narrator spoke. She was a little quick. Several times I had to look at my phone to check the speed on my setting, to remember she was just a fast reader. Not that big of a deal, as everything else was very well read. At times I felt she could have altered the tone and inflection of her voice for the male characters, but I was able to keep up, nonetheless.

Overall, very good
Revisado: 09-13-22
This was a pretty decent thriller, I must say, in spite of the many times I wanted to throttle the main character for being weak— oh I suppose there are some people who truly do behave this way, so I guess I can’t fault the writer. I was also grateful there wasn’t a lot of unnecessary profanity. That will always ruin a good book for me, and as an avid reader, I appreciate talented writers who do not need to resort to vulgarity. The narrator did a good job, can’t find anything to complain about there (and that is a good thing since narration can make or break a story). There was also a nice little unexpected twist at the end, and room for a sequel. I will have to see if one exists. I will likely listen to this again in the future!

Historia
From Steven Millhauser, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Martin Dressler and one of the most imaginative and essential voices of our time, comes a fable about a race of miniature people and the way of life they have come master within our own. By turns enchanting and provocative, The Little People explores the fascination and unease the little people create in us, examines our private desire to disappear into their world, and reveals what happens when our personal and romantic lives inevitably collide.

Like listening to an interesting textbook
Revisado: 06-14-22
I enjoy listening to short stories while I am doing things menial tasks like painting or cleaning, as they don’t typically require too much of my attention. It’s more like noise with a purpose. This book wasn’t terrible, it had its interesting moments, but it certainly isn’t worth paying for.
There was very little story to this, it was more facts about the differences between the “little people” and “big people”. Three chapters told the stories of a few characters. But by the last 15 minutes, I began to suspect I had been had. It felt like this was more of a political position about differences. I felt like I was being told how to feel and how to think about situations happening in real life. The author’s depiction that anyone of a different point of view was violent and ignorant was irrational and irritating. Just as in the book, people who have very real concerns can sometimes become violent out of fear or anger, the truth is, the majority of people on any given opposing side, are rational and civil in their methods of opposition. That was not shown in this book, and it was obvious – – – to me anyway – – that the author is one who believes that anyone who has an opposing opinion must be evil. That’s a divisive and counterproductive narrative to push in any form.
Lastly, the narrator did not have a pleasing tone of voice to listen to— he sounded like an old professor reading from a textbook – –though I suppose in this particular book, he was the perfect choice. The book and narrator went together like peas and carrots. I don’t mind it when an author has an agenda when they write, we all have a bit of that in us, but I don’t like being suckered and that’s kind of how this felt. I’m pretty sure I got this for free, and for that I am grateful.

Historia
Every object has a ghost. There is a small yellow backpack - half unzipped, mouth yawning to the pavement, contents strewn around it (a banana, an exercise book, a pair of scissors) - abandoned on a suburban footpath. Ten feet away, the rubber stamp of tyres, resisting clamped brakes, mount the curb and cut across the path. The tracks come to an end at a crippled stop sign. The street, a tree-lined suburban road dappled in late-afternoon sunlight, is calm. But anyone walking past can feel the ghosts: the prickle on the back of their necks that tells them something happened here.

I did NOT see that coming!
Revisado: 07-24-21
I am somewhat adept at pegging the bad guys and eventual end of a story, but not with this one! Two big twists that were not only surprising, but depressingly enlightened in showing the direction that we as a society are heading. I’ll be chewing on the causation of how these scenarios could occur, for a long time. So many layers of motivation, ignorance, and curiosity in these characters, that create great book club discussions. That’s what makes a great book. (I’ve rarely encountered a book I actually wanted to discuss with other readers. This is a rare one!)
I’m not a fan of course language, and while this book had a few more F-bombs than I’m comfortable with, they were tolerable. I’m also not a fan of books that depict harm to children—be patient with this book, and trust the author’s story. You won’t be led into anything that’ll make you feel icky. But you WILL be impacted, and at the end you’ll see WHY protecting the innocence of our children is and must always be paramount in our consideration of what we tolerate in society and especially in our homes.
Whether the author intended it or not, this book forces a hard look into how we treat children, and what is considered appropriate.
I took one star off the narration—I thought she did a great job, but there were a few key moments where I had a difficult time differentiating the characters. I figured it out, eventually. Overall, the book is fantastic.
