Historia
Germany, the most racist of countries less than a century ago, has for the past two years welcomed over one million refugees, more than any other European country. To find out the secret behind this turn of character, Tuvia Tenenbom, a Jew born in Israel, presented himself as a Jordanian and was able to gain entry into many refugee camps. Living in squalid conditions in airless rooms, and with barely edible food, the refugees begged Tuvia to help them get out of the camps.

Very Short and not one of his best; bad narration
Revisado: 07-03-24
Narration on this work is very poor. I was convinced it was text-to-speech with no emotion, no pause for a breath and mispronunciation of several words. When reading a book about Germany, one would hope that the Former Chancellor's name could be said correctly. But without the surname, I often could not understand what he was talking about; Angela Merkel is not on-GAY-la. Lack of emotion when reading loses much of the humor that Tenenbom is famous for.

Historia
With vivid story-telling, extensive historical research, and on-the-ground reporting, Ghattas dispels accepted truths about a region she calls home. She explores how Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran, once allies and twin pillars of US strategy in the region, became mortal enemies after 1979. She shows how they used and distorted religion in a competition that went well beyond geopolitics. Feeding intolerance, suppressing cultural expression, and encouraging sectarian violence from Egypt to Pakistan, the war for cultural supremacy led to many events.

Historia
Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known by all as “Sisi”), was considered to be the most beautiful woman of her time. Looks she had in abundance and they gained her the heart of an Emperor before her sixteenth birthday. Emperor Franz Josef was tall and handsome, and for him it was love at first sight. She loved him as well and said yes. Now young, newly-wed, and an Empress, the world was at her feet. All the people truly wanted was simply to gaze upon her. How could this ever go wrong …? But it did … horribly wrong. Sisi was a woman out of her time and place. She wanted the one thing ...

Historia
Ensconced in a lovely tropical villa on idyllic Triggerfish Lane, Jim Davenport anticipates the good life to come. But this isn't living -- it's Florida, and the neighborhood is not quite what it seems. It's got overly aggressive Little League parents, drug-free Rastafarians, homicidal hookers, unnatural sex and casual violence. Oh, yes, and there's a psychopathic serial killer-cum-Sunshine-State folklorist named Serge A. Storms living directly across the street.

dramatization detracts from story
Revisado: 01-26-24
loud, inappropriate, repetitive music punctuates every chapter break with different inappropriate music at the end of chapters. Narrator's voice is louder than all speakers, making for very uneven volume. Snorting horses and rattling tea cups are okay but add little. Just read it next time.

Historia
This epic work tells the story of the Hemingses, whose close blood ties to our third president had been systematically expunged from American history until very recently. Now, historian and legal scholar Annette Gordon-Reed traces the Hemings family from its origins in Virginia in the 1700s to the family's dispersal after Jefferson's death in 1826. It brings to life not only Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson but also their children and Hemings's siblings, who shared a father with Jefferson's wife, Martha.

A lot of editorial
Revisado: 09-17-23
There is some carefully researched history here, but every chapter has heavy-handed quantities of opinion, often judging the 18th century by 21st century standards. We can all agree that slavery is a terrible thing--it only needs to be stated once. Lots of conjecture about "what if this" or "what if that." Lots of blaming racism for slavery and victimizing people of color. Nothing about the irony of Jefferson's confrontation of American seamen enslaved by the Barbary pirates in north Africa.
If I had wanted a sermon, I would have gone to church. It is unreasonable to expect teenagers to examine their life choices in light of social movements of a different age, much less when they are driven by hormones and new experiences. In sum, this is more analysis than history.
