I remember reading the physical book when I was much younger and both enjoying it and feeling confused. I’m still enjoying aspects; the worldbuilding is great, the male characters are well-rounded… but the author’s female characters and the way the protagonists relates to women just makes me SHUDDER. Holding open a door for a female detective doesn’t not make you an old school gross old wizardly woman-hating dude. This one is getting returned before I even finish it. Now I’m older I can put a name to the confusion I had about this book, and it’s not a pretty one.

Excellent novella from an outstanding author

Perhaps it’s an understatement to say that this is a bit of a different feel for Dervla McTiernan! I believe the author was previously a lawyer; the legalese seemed accurate, tied in well but was not over the top. Some new characters for this standalone story, and some excellent twists.
I love Dervla’s usual Audible narrator (female, Irish) and was a touch disappointed that there would be 2 male voices, but they both did an excellent job with the story’s twin protagonists. Now to wait for the next in the excellent Cormac Reilly series!

And my first Audible listen (because I knew I’d never get the physical book quickly enough). A great continuation and I’m really happy with the job the narrator has done. I’d recommend you read Fangirl and Carry On first. Amazing!!

I’m glad I read reviews so I knew about the sound effects as is it different for a book, but I treated the performance like a play and I really enjoyed it! Many great narrators in this bunch and a lovely tale.

A lovely recollection of the madness that follows loss

I suppose this might be a painful listen for some, and calling it madness might seem pejorative to others. For me, this was lovely, like an old jumper when it’s just cold enough to put on to do some gardening. Most enjoyable listen.

What a nice surprise - great YA fiction

A fun book for YA readers, felt quite long for a free book. Very enjoyable, great voice acting. Worth a go!
