I love Simone St. James but this one was a little lite.
Revisado: 03-13-24
I always have appreciated Simone St. James' ability to reel you in with details and character development, and always love the suspense meets supernatural arc her books take. For me, this was boring. I think the premise was really thrilling but the execution was a little middling and confusing, bordering on boring. Will always listen, this was just my least favorite in many years.

Love LAW books but this one had too many characters and too many details.
Revisado: 12-17-23
This one had promise it could have used some more editing. There were so many characters and the last few chapters could have been boiled down to like 15 minutes.

Very different/fun listen
Revisado: 09-17-23
I have always loved stories set in the west. Add a tinge of archaeology, mystery, and dark magic, and I'm there. A lot of the details were probably a little much, but it was fun. The narrator was awesome.

Like the story, the narration is not for me.
Revisado: 09-15-23
I know that this narrator is a favorite for some, but she drives me up a wall. Once she gets going, the narration gets better, but ultimately, she's a bit "too precious" for me. I did like the story though, and yes it was a slow burn but it was kind of fun and moody, which I like. Anything set in remote areas or cold places gives my that hygge vibe.

The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

This is a terrible book.
Revisado: 07-11-23
You can put all the tw and cw on this terribly written book, it'll it's still flat out a bad read, and completely gross and cringe. I don't understand how this was recommended for me.
This glorifies stalking. It mixes two extremely disturbing storylines (child sex trafficking) and a stalker who fights against the ring but stalks and r*pes his victim. And the victim falls in love. (?)
I also take issue with the plot lines. It bounces from location to location, using weird references to Z (Qanon or Anonymous?) which is just weird. It felt like someone giving life to misinformation, but vague enough to feel like the author was winking at anyone who believes in that
The writing is dreadful. If I had to hear "he quirked a brow" one more time. Or biting on a bottom lip. Like stop. Please.
Also, if you're going to describe sex, like, do a better job.
This is a gross book. Just pass on it. Trust me. I will not read the second one. And I genuinely do not know why so many people have left positive reviews for this.

Great listen and gray story, nice slow burn
Revisado: 07-08-23
I personally like stories that take time to unfurl, and I really w joyed the writing style here. Narration was great too. If you're looking for a run of the mill fast paced predictable thriller, this isn't for you.

Historia
Emma Carpenter lives in isolation with her golden retriever Laika, house-sitting an old beachfront home on the rainy Washington coast. Her only human contact is her enigmatic old neighbor, Deek, and (via text) the house’s owner, Jules. One day, she reads a poorly written—but gruesome—horror novel by the author H. G. Kane, and posts a one-star review that drags her into an online argument with none other than the author himself. Soon after, disturbing incidents start to occur at night.

A bit long, but a fun thriller/horror novel that could stand to be a few hours shorter
Revisado: 05-20-23
I loved the premise of this novel, but I kept looking down at my app to see how long this thing was going to last.
It all takes place over the course of a few days, but the vast majority of the "thriller" portion happens over the course of one long night in the form of "No Exit" which I loved.
The premise was really clever, but some of the details were a little unnecessary. I get that with TA you have to expect some gore, but I found myself having to listen at almost 2x speed. By the end I didn't care what happened to any of the characters.
Lots of red herrings that were clever and the performances in the audiobook were strong. Like I said, just a little bit on the long/gory side for me. :)

Julia Whelan is everything, the story gets better in the second half.
Revisado: 05-11-23
I absolutely adore Emily Henry. This was the first novel that she has written in a long time that did not resonate with me or keep my interest until at least the second half. Part of the problem with it is the fact that it follows a very shallow group of people, and typically I feel like Emily Henry writes characters in such a way that makes you care about literally every single person in the novel. I do think that the novel gets better in the second half and that Julia Whelan is an absolute rockstar of a narrator--had she not narrated this I probably would not have finished the book. But I'm really glad that I did, and I did find some really lovely little bits of Emily Henry that made my heart feel good. It's worth a listen.

I had a really hard time with the narration.
Revisado: 03-29-23
I really hate to dislike an audiobook because of narration, but Priya's narration was really choppy and it made it hard to follow.
For me, this story was very predictable and I could hardly make it to the end. I did like the make narrators voice--but the two just did not work together for me.
Whoever said this reminds them of Criminals Minds, yes. Like a verrrrrry long episode.
