"Virtual voice" is the pits.
Revisado: 03-02-25
These were good stories, but it was odd that they were called separate books. Worst reading EVER. Phrasing is very poor, accenting of words is terribly incorrect. There is little sensible flow from 1 word to the next. Other than the non-existent "performance", the books are average. Nothing special. The only thing that made it worth my time to read is the historical aspect of the book. It was interesting to read about that period of time in a gold mining town & the various ways that people lived.

The accents used by the audio reader are ridiculous & very off-putting. I read this series of books several years ago and loved them, but listening to them being read ruined them for me.

Historia
Raised in post-Revolution Granville, Massachusetts, James Gould could only imagine the beauty and warmth of the lands to the south. It was there that he longed to build bridges and lighthouses from his very own designs and plans. His gripping story unfolds as Gould follows his dream to the raw settlement of Bangor on the Penobscot River, St. Simons Island off the coast of Georgia, lawless Spanish East Florida, and back - at last and finally - to St. Simons.

Horrible reading of characters.
Revisado: 01-27-25
The voices used in reading this book, the narrators or characters, grate on one's nerves. They are awful, and they ruin the book I previously kept at the top of my beloved-books list. I will not rereaad the other books in the series, as getting through "The Lighthouse" this time has been a dreadful chore.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Historical fiction during USA Civil War
Revisado: 09-12-24
An enjoyable telling of how life may have been during the war for the 3 grown daughters and 3 sons of a wealthy family which had been very good to their slaves before the war. Their struggles and sorrows, their accomplishments and good deeds, their travels, and the changes in their lives brought about ultimately by the war are looked at through rose colored glasses. I enjoyed reading this 3-book series, even though I don't believe it to represent more than about 5% of the lives of Southerners during that period if time. It did show many different characters' experiences, which taken separately may have been quite possible, including how several former slaves adjusted to freedom individually, how a maimed Rebel soldier failed to adjust to being able to keep fighting, how gentle women cared for sick and wounded soldiers, how 2 older women managed to live through the chaos they were in the midst of, how there was forgiveness in some cases between northerners and southerners immediately after the war, and more. The 3 books definitely sparked my interest to read other authors who wrote fiction meant to take place during and shortly after the War Between the States in the USA in the 1860s.

Interesting historically.
Revisado: 08-30-24
I learned some history from this book, which was my goal. The voice use for the character "Wolf" seemed totally inappropriate for a Native American, but the 3 sisters' one voice was true for a southern woman. The respect shown to all the former-slave characters was admirable if not typicak of the times represented. The storyline was at times confusing and superfluous, but as a whole I enjoyed it.

Historia
David Sheff's story is a first: a teenager's addiction from the parent's point of view, a real-time chronicle of the shocking descent into substance abuse and the gradual emergence into hope.
Before meth, Sheff's son, Nic, was a varsity athlete, honor student, and award-winning journalist. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who stole money from his eight-year-old brother and lived on the streets. With haunting candor, Sheff traces the first warning signs, the attempts at rehabilitation, and, at last, the way past addiction. He shows us that, whatever an addict's fate, the rest of the family must care for one another, too, lest they become addicted to addiction.

If you have an addict in your life ....
Revisado: 08-20-24
This true account of a father's continual efforts to save his young-adult son from the grip of drug addiction is astounding in all that it teaches the reader about what actually happens to the mind of an addict. It is extremely well written, as in, it keeps your interest and is not difficult to follow. It doesn't offer advice, it walks the reader through the father's many attempts to find help for his son in his nearly impossible battle with addiction, and the many varied approaches he took or considered. The book also helps the reader to gain some small amount of understanding of why a recovering addict may fail again and again to maintain his sober status, even after years of being sober. I believe that this would also be a good book for parents to have their children read BEFORE they ever try any kind of illegal substance. For some children that might mean reading this book at the age of 10 or 11 along WITH the parent. Certainly by age 14-15, a young person could clearly understand the repercussions of even "just trying" using a drug once. I think that this book must have saved thousands of lives by now (2024), and I hope that it will save thousands or millions more in the future. I strongly recommend this book as very educational and potentially life-saving for all teens and adults, especially parents and everyone who works with, cares for, teaches, or in any other way is in contact with or has influence on young adults.

Surprise around every corner
Revisado: 08-14-24
The exploits of the 2 main characters are sometimes fun, sometimes interesting, sometimes surprising; however, the amount of sexual content is embarrassing and distasteful. I would prefer that the story be written with more decorum.
