Historia
The year 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Excellent classic English mystery set in the interwar period.
Revisado: 01-19-25
The mystery was maintained until the end. The first quarter eases the reader into the setting & the many characters. The narrator does a fabulous job with all the voices. The character depth & development was well done. The writer has clearly done her research regarding the time period & she has the characters provide historically accurate details without it feeling like a history lesson. Highly recommended.

Historia
Everyone has a story to tell. But does Janice have the power to unlock her own? She can’t recall what started her collection. Maybe it was in a fragment of conversation overheard as she cleaned a sink? Before long (as she dusted a sitting room or defrosted a fridge) she noticed people were telling her their stories. Perhaps they had always done so, but now it is different, now the stories are reaching out to her and she gathers them to her.

I’ve listened to this story multiple times now. The narration is perfect. Also, unlike some stories that start slow, each chapter provides just enough detail and then flows into the next chapter smoothly and yet with surprises and turns to keep one interested the whole time.

Historia
The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. A passionate tale of a chaotic and often violent love, Wuthering Heights transcends your average romance and, with its Gothic undertones, takes the listener on a journey through one man's lustful hunt for revenge.

Superb narrator but dreary story
Revisado: 10-31-24
The narration was superb! Reasons to listen to the story: the narration of the Yorkshire accent is excellent. It would not be the same to read it; hearing it made all the difference. the description of the physical environment was detailed eg the moors, and the description of the ignorance of the small closed environments was well documented. Reasons to skip this novel: it’s unpleasant! The characters have no redeeming qualities. There is no depth to any of them. There is no change in character development even over the course of hundreds of pages: the characters that started off horrible stay horrible. There is nothing romantic or beautiful about this story at all. It is a sad depressing depiction of cruel and ignorant people.

Legal Immigrant is Alan Cumming's collection of musings on his experiences as a US citizen, growing older, and what it feels like to be an immigrant in today's America, featuring songs and stories that are as eclectic and idiosyncratic as Alan himself. The audio, recorded live at the Minetta Lane Theatre, is a smorgasbord of genres, styles, and tales. Replete with laughter, tears and, of course, provocation, featuring covers of songs made famous by a diverse array of musical legends.

Revisado: 10-25-24
I enjoyed it because I had previously read his memoir: not my father’s son. That backstory helped me understand and appreciate his performance. He’s a very talented man with strong opinions. The performance is definitely preaching to the choir; if you already appreciate Alan’s pov & talent, then you will enjoy the show. Pleasant 2 hours.

Revisado: 10-08-24
Anna Sewell was ahead of her times- she wrote a novel that influenced generations regarding best practices for caring for horses. It has a good storyline, well written & suitable for 10-year-olds as well as adults. She does not just tell us to be responsible and gentle. She actually shows us through the characters in her story.

If you ask a Finn, they will likely be as baffled as you are. That’s why Melanie Dower, an expat who has been living in Finland for the past decade, has taken up the charge. Her vantage as an outsider entrenched in Finnish culture uniquely positions her to identify the keys to Finnish happiness that elude the rest of the world and that Finns take for granted. From sauna to strong social safety nets, Finnish life is made up of a constellation of habits and structures that leave its residents relaxed, healthy, and fulfilled.

Enjoyed the descriptions of Finland and the Finnish lifestyle & philosophy. This is not a work of great depth. Often the message was: this is a great place, but you’re not likely to be able to live here, so just visit, then go home.

Well cast, clear and understandable dialogue. If anyone has seen the movie with Orson Welles, you’ll understand why this is appreciated – OW mumbled through the whole movie. I don’t know German and listening is not the same as reading the book or seeing the movie, however, it was a very enjoyable interpretation and worth listening to even multiple times.

Layers: listen and reflect. Worthwhile
Revisado: 05-21-24
If you ever had the feeling as a child that you didn’t quite fit in with your peers or your family, then this story is for you. Whether or not you’re a recent immigrant, the multicultural perspective is something relatable and gently explored. I enjoyed hearing LB reading it & the writing so much that I immediately listened again. Listen to this when you have some time to reflect afterwards.

The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

one of my first audible selections purchased many years ago. Listened to it multiple times. Perfect for a rainy weekend or anytime you want a good story. really well done. I don't want to spoil it with giving anything away. Not Agatha Christie wholesome mystery so don't recommend for a family drive. Didn't see the movie so I can't compare. If you've spent any time on a London train going out to the suburbs, you'll appreciate it.

Historia
A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it.

Amazing narrator!
Revisado: 09-03-21
I chose this version because of the narrator and I'm glad I did. Among Russian literature scholars, this is not the preferred translation, however, the audible narrator of the newer translation has a voice that is unappealing to me. Gregory's narration help me get through this book. a warning: audible cuts off the last sentence of the novel! ln terms of the story, this is not really a crime novel; it's more like the psychology of a criminal mind, how isolation affects humans- especially intelligent over-thinkers. I also gained some insight into the Russian obsession with "suffering." (they see it as inevitable, necessary, and even healthy.) this is not a "feel-good" novel, rather it is a novel to understand how others think and feel, and their concepts of Good and evil.
