Historia
No electricity. No running water. No food. No end in sight. If life as you knew it changed in an instant, would you be prepared? In A. American's first novel, Going Home, listeners were introduced to Morgan Carter, the resourceful, tough-as-nails survivalist who embarks on a treacherous 250-mile journey across Florida following the collapse of the nation's power grid. Now reunited with his loving wife and daughters in this follow-up to Going Home, Morgan knows that their happiness is fleeting, as the worst is yet to come.

Dave’s Hot Chicken - Reaper (for your ears)
Revisado: 09-26-24
I recently tried Dave’s Reaper level spicy chicken and I think my experience with that is a great proxy for a book review
I get home ready for the challenge. I know it’s going to be extreme with the disclaimer and warning and all. The whiff confirms it. First bite I know I make a terrible mistake. At first it feels a bit like eating glass but then it sets in and I know, this is going to be an ordeal.
After a few minutes of my face melting off and snot running down like I just been riot gassed, I push through my commitment. I’m going to finish. Each bite is a decent deeper in misery. And just when I think my tongue is numb I hit a nugget of concentrated hate. Finally that last bite.
And then I look down drenched in sweat, and I see the second tendie.

Historia
If society collapsed, could you survive? When Morgan Carter's car breaks down 250 miles from his home, he figures his weekend plans are ruined. But things are about to get much, much worse: the country's power grid has collapsed. There is no electricity, no running water, no Internet, and no way to know when normalcy will be restored - if it ever will be.

Going Home is to One Second After, what...
Revisado: 12-16-23
Going Home is to One Second After
what Fifty Shades was to Twilight
It made her wealthy and this author made a lot of coin peddling bigotry and violence.
I enjoyed One Second After when it came out and must have thought this would be a good follow up. After reading a LOT of reviews I held my nose and bought it. (and the next one sadly)
Apparently there is a massive audience for gear dork pr0n. I can only imagine the person getting nerded out by naive references to what will be hopelessly out of date gear. The author doomed the book to be stuck in a 10 year window of technical relevance. The fact that the "EMP" or whatever killed electronics wasn't addressed was annoying.
The details that weren't important such as names of gear were emphasized while details about the environment and people around them were very glossed and 2D.
The violence is probably a fantasy of many people. Which is a bit disgusting. The post apocalyptic zombie genre can get away with gratuitous violence because they aren't human anymore. The probably has never been around violence because the reactions were not lifelike.
Character development is about as tasty as little caesar pizza. The questing tribe members are thin and boring characters and the NPC they get to kill are just cartoon versions of the worst of society and that's apparently everyone now. If he had put in more looting I would think he was a gamer.
I rarely leave reviews unless the book is just that bad. To the point that I have to force myself to finish so I can leave a review. I've read worse I guess.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Great storyline. I lacked cultural context
Revisado: 08-16-23
I don’t think I had enough cultural understanding on the topics of the book to really get a good feel for it. So many things are foreign to me that I missed out on a lot of contacts so I think the store it was probably better than I experienced

Historia
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

I don’t think anything in this book is going to shock people at this point. It just goes to show how far off the rails we are. I think the author was thorough and gave him a fair shot to express himself.

Great potential on a new take for the genre
Revisado: 10-15-22
I enjoyed the change and the introduction of new ideas around the characters. If you were into fantasy and magic this is probably a good one to experiment with. For me it seemed like there was some small holes in the world building but no major defects. The writing was great.

I’m not sure what it is about a story that requires a heroine. Why do the male characters always tend to end up like these flat two dimensional caricatures.
Production was great. Story was OK. Characters could have been better.
