Historia
It was July 2002 and Scott Langley had just graduated from the Japanese Instructors’ Course in Tokyo. He returned to Europe with a mandate to build a strong karate group in the UK and Ireland. In a decade that witnessed the implosion of most groups, he built up one of the largest organizations in Europe: but his success at home set him on a collision course with his seniors back in Japan. Karate Clever chronicles how, through diplomacy and cooperation, he managed to find a new way to steer one of the most successful karate organizations active today. This is the true story of one man’s ...

How the Sausage Gets Made
Revisado: 05-02-25
As a long time karate practitioner (off and on, now back on) it was really interesting, fun, and sad to see someone create a large karate organization, the politics and personal dynamics, and the eventual splintering. Heart wrenching!
I’ve always been fascinated on why this happens, but thought it was a one-off phenomenon of something I saw as a kid. Now I see it’s a natural phenomenon.
And, overall, when you have a dominant power a million miles away calling the shots to a group abroad (ie staring to become meddlesome than helpful)…bad things happen. Like revolutions :)
For an AI narrator, I was very surprised at how good and smooth it was. There was a fair degree of emoting, but sometimes not enough. And the AI doesn’t know that “Osu” is a Japanese term and would keep spelling it “o-s-u” which can be jarring as a listener and confusing if you don’t know karate/Japanese. And some of the other Japanese words weren’t pronounced well (but some English speaking human narrators have done worse).
Well written, honest (warts and all), and a great study on organization building, cross country sociology; and a cautionary tale of power and what some do when they fear to lose it.

When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

Another home run!
Revisado: 01-03-25
I’d say I enjoy 90% of Michael Lewis’s books. I always look forward to a new release, and this one did not disappoint. Very interesting character, very interesting turn of events. I also like that by the end, you’re still really left up to yourself as to how you feel about the character, the author does not make the choice for you and he makes it very clear. definitely worth a read.

In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Time Travel + Mystery
Revisado: 09-12-24
This was an exciting gem to discover! The premise was interesting and the setup hooked me right away. I loved the radio play setup, though sometimes it was hard to keep straight who was who (but the voice actors were phenomenal!). There was way more mystery here than I imagined there would be and I hated having to put my phone away. I was hooked from beginning to end. It’s still great the second time through as you can then pick up on the little details missed the first time. It’s definitely worth taking a chance on:)

Success Leaves Clues
Revisado: 05-23-24
If you read a lot of performance and nutrition books, it’s easy to become jaded and think “it’s all the same” after awhile. This book came recommended through one of the newsletters I read and decided to take a chance. I wasn’t dissapointed! There were some great tweaks to practices I was already implementing, and some new ones I’m very eager to try out.
Not only has the author worked with Lebron James, but he apprenticed under Michael Jordan’s trainer. I’m not a huge basketball fan, but these are legendary athletes! How can you not be curious to see what the author knows?! How can you not find something new?!
Definitely worth the price of admission! Thanks!!

More than a martial arts book
Revisado: 05-04-24
More than hearing about a martial arts legend’s life, you gain a deeper knowledge of Brazil, the Gracie Clan and ju jitsu, MMA history, and bushido. Beyond that, you see that mastery goes beyond skill and drive, but a deeper spiritual connection. A surprisingly wonderful read, I devoured this book.

I’ve read a lot about marketing and starting a business, but I really liked Noah’s approach. Less time on over-thinking, more time on doing, testing, and re-trying. He’s very clear, direct, and honest (and funny!) in his approach. I highly recommend it. Thanks Noah!!

Really Helps To Understand The Movie
Revisado: 11-14-23
I always liked Revenge
of the Sith the most, but I always had a hard time understanding how Anakin could fall to the dark side so quickly and so easily. This book really helped to fill in the gaps and that mystery. It makes Anakin’s fall all the more tragic.
Always well performed, and entertaining! Thanks!

Historia
In 1579, a Portuguese trade ship sails into port at Kuchinotsu, Japan, loaded with European wares and weapons. On board is Father Alessandro Valignano, an Italian priest and Jesuit missionary whose authority in central and east Asia is second only to the pope’s. Beside him is his protector, a large and imposing East African man. Taken from his village as a boy, sold as a slave to Portuguese mercenaries, and forced to fight in wars in India, the young but experienced soldier is haunted by memories of his past.

Revisado: 10-31-23
I didn’t know much about Yasuke before I read this novel and I wanted to learn more and be entertained along the way. It did not disappoint. I could tell the author did his homework on the time period and customs of Japan, so that helped keep me in the story. Fun and well paced, I recommend it.

The world’s greatest bodybuilder. The world’s highest-paid movie star. The leader of the world’s sixth-largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

Arnold Does It Again
Revisado: 10-23-23
I loved Arnold’s biography and I wasn’t sure how many more new nuggets of wisdom he might be able to share, but I was wrong. So happy I invested the time and money in this book. I believe it’s always time well-spent to listen to accomplished people, but especially to accomplished people in varied arenas. Thank you to Arnold and his team for bringing something positive and concise (not 50 pages to make one simple point to fill space—no filler!) to all of us.
