Historia
When the luxurious Blue Train arrives at Nice, a guard attempts to wake serene Ruth Kettering from her slumbers. But she will never wake again - for a heavy blow has killed her, disfiguring her features almost beyond recognition. What is more, her precious rubies are missing. The prime suspect is Ruth's estranged husband, Derek. Yet Hercule Poirot is not convinced, so he stages an eerie reenactment of the journey, complete with the murderer on board.

One of my HP faves
Revisado: 10-20-17
A great precursor to MOTOE. Christie begins to explore the possibilities of train-based murder. A blessed return to strong story telling after the dreadful Big Four. Excellent characterisation and fun caricatures (so?)! Fraser in high narrating form.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

Surprisingly not my favorite King book
Revisado: 07-11-17
I had never read IT before, although I've read most of his others. He remains my favorite. I'd have to go back and see where IT fits in his popularity curve, but that could be why it suffers from a lack of editing. Could be much tighter. [spoiler?] Plus, maybe my age is showing, but one of the key acts of the group as kids is tremendously off putting in 2017. I'm trying to see it's literary purpose, but I'm having a hard time. Weber is versitile and for a work of such length, shows his staying power. A worthy listen.

People like this book? Blah blah dreck
Revisado: 04-20-17
Having enjoyed the Clockwork series so far, I thought another Anderson work might be a good choice. I guess it just wasn't for me. Too space political (I didn't care for the new Battlestar Galactica). Too many characters that just didn't resonate. No knock on narrator George - he was game, but I couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking reading this blah blah blah stuff. I think I bailed after 2 hours. oh well....

A hat trick of King and Patton
Revisado: 04-05-17
The third book of the King-Bill Hodges set doesn't disappoint. The characters are believable, even if the premise is typical far-fetched pulpy fare. But isn't that what we love about King. My usual kudos to Will Patton on the excellent read (now if he could only score the hit TV show he deserves!).

Roger Ackroyd knew too much. He knew that the woman he loved had poisoned her brutal first husband. He suspected, also, that someone had been blackmailing her. Then, tragically, came the news that she had taken her own life with a drug overdose. But the evening post brought Roger one last fatal scrap of information. Unfortunately, before he could finish reading the letter, he was stabbed to death.

Best.Mystery.Story.Ever.
Revisado: 02-28-17
I continue my discovery of these 90 year old stories that hold up amazingly well in the 21st century. People are still people after all. This one though is probably my most favorite mystery story of all time. I understood the relationships amongst the players and their motivations. Poirot holds just enough back to keep you guessing. Fraser does his usual solid job without falling into caricature. Enough said. Anything more would require a spoiler alert. Listen to this one!!

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Footnote free psychology at its best?
Revisado: 02-06-17
Hmm. What to say about a self-help book that at times is profound, while at the same time being rooted only in experience and minimal research. Perhaps the printed book has more footnotes or references, but something tells me no. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. I applaud the choice of a professional narrator, in spite of a few cringe worthy voicings. I am happy for Mr. Manson sharing his journey. He makes good points about what we as a society applaud in this day and age and how that can really mess you up. It's a lightweight read, and I hope his counsel has staying power with me.

Historia
In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

Fascinating and tragic, and today's science lesson
Revisado: 01-25-17
I had not heard of this incident until a friend recommended this book to me. Non-fiction is not my usual, but the length seemed tolerable. I was fascinated by the tragic story, and when placed in juxtaposition to Eicher's own investigative strory, the narrative flows easily and intriguingly. The scientific aspects are presented plainly and without complication, yet the story is all heart - getting you into the lost lives of these young people and Eicher's own drive to see it through. Eicher's narration, while simply serviceable, lends authenticity to the telling of the tale.

Historia
A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far - a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes. "Wake up, genius." So begins King's instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades.

Will Patton's master class on narration.
Revisado: 01-10-17
I know I am more than the average King fan, so suffice it to say Finders Keepers is another strong outing from King in what I'll call his action-y genre. Nobody gets inside characters' heads like King. You get the villain's motivation and you believe his actions that come from them. Same for the protagonist. Great story that moves along nicely with depth. Now, on to what I see as the strength of this production. This was my first listen to a book narrated by Will Patton. I've always appreciated his character actor skills - all the way back to that scary turn in "No Way Out," - but this novel was a master class in bringing characters to life. I'll be looking for more titles from him going forward. Kudos to author and presenter.

First there was the mystery of the film star and the diamond...then came the "suicide" that was murder...the mystery of the absurdly cheap flat...a suspicious death in a locked gun room...a million-dollar bond robbery...the curse of a pharaoh's tomb...a jewel robbery by the sea...the abduction of a prime minister...the disappearance of a banker...a phone call from a dying man...and finally, the mystery of the missing will. What links these fascinating cases? Only the brilliant deductive powers of Hercule Poirot!

Get your Poirot fix in bite-sized chunks!
Revisado: 12-20-16
I was skeptical that this was my next book in Poirot order as I didn't think I'd like the short story form, this works. 20-30 minutes each fit into my commute nicely. The plots are the usual Christie outlandish style, Poirot never fails to amuse - and Hastings slays me. Narrator Suchet knows his strengths. If I may say: if you like Poirot, your little grey cells will like this one, too!

It was a world of airships and alchemy; clockwork carnivals; pirates; lost cities; a rigid Watchmaker who controlled every aspect of life; and his nemesis, the ruthless and violent Anarchist, who wanted to destroy it all. Anderson and Peart have returned to their colourful creation to explore the places and the characters that still have a hold on their imaginations.

Better than the original?
Revisado: 12-04-16
While technically a sequel, I'd guess you say this was more of a companion piece to Clockwork Angels. In some ways it surpasses the original. Either way enjoyable. Kudos to the production team on the variety and quality of voice talent that brings the sub-stories to life. A well used credit!
