100% disclosure, I'm a native of the Tri-City area of East Tennessee so listening to these books based so well around my native home was a unique experience allowing me to better visualize the areas so well described in this series of books. It was refreshing to see my home so well portrayed, even under such trying circumstances. The author's skill at character and world building on this series was very well done and I don't hesitate to give them 5 stars across the board.

A lot of undeveloped potential on this one.

Honestly my biggest gripe with this story as an audio book is the narration. If you are going to use A.I. as the narrator with the potential to give you any voice with any accent in the world, who makes the decision to give the main character who is the daughter of a native American and a US Marine a British accent? That was very off putting.

Story wise this reads like a first draft. There are some good ideas in there but more time needs to be spent developing the characters, world building and cleaning up the time line. It's a short story I know but it falls flat because it really needs more time spent developing it in my opinion.

It's shocking to see a cautionary tale such as this become reality bit by bit. Sadly, this work definitely rings with more truth now than it did when I read it in high school.

Worth the listen!

It took me a bit to get used to the cadence of the narration on this one. I feel that, with the number of predominant female characters, a female voice as narrator may have been a better choice though.The storyline is strong enough to grab your interest and, with the exception of the literary trope of portraying small town law enforcement as incompetent/prejudiced bumbling idiots with a fat, power mad sherriff/police chief and the obligatory lone detective who tries to do his best under terrible conditions, is original and keeps that interest going. Overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
