Historia
Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest.

Brilliant writing
Revisado: 02-03-25
One could dive into the middle of a chapter and pull out almost any sentence to find a creative, quirky, insightful perspective on the human condition. It’s the perspective of a younger person, so at times it seemed exaggerated, but that’s clearly his viewpoint.

Historia
Your body contains a symphony of tiny timepieces, synchronized to the sun and subtle signals in your environment and behavior. But modern insults like artificial light, contrived time zones, and late-night meals can wreak havoc on your internal clocks. Armed with advances in biology and technology, a circadian renaissance is reclaiming those lost rhythms. The Inner Clock explores the emerging science and its transformative applications: How could taking a walk in the morning and going to bed at the same time each night keep your body in sync?

Great book; annoying narrator.
Revisado: 01-24-25
The content is well-researched and fascinating. However, the narrator is so exaggerated that it destroyed the book for me. She sounds like a like a high-pitched, overly animated housewife selling laundry detergent circa 1950. No one interested in a topic like this wants to be spoken to in such a ridiculous tone.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

A powerful book about an unimaginable time. It’s hard to believe anyone could survive such a war, or any war for that matter. It was beautifully narrated and I’m grateful to Kristin Hannah for taking such care with the subject matter.

Don't let the title fool you. This isn't a book about high fiving everyone else in your life. You're already doing that. Cheering for your favorite teams. Celebrating your friends. Supporting the people you love as they go after what they want in life. Imagine if you gave that same love and encouragement to yourself. Or even better, you made it a daily habit. You'd be unstoppable. In this book, Mel teaches you how to start high fiving the most important person in your life, the one who is staring back at you in the mirror: YOURSELF.

Insightful, engaging, and helpful. She’s refreshingly, honest and authentic. I’ve listened to a lot of similar books and typically find myself for it after the first chapter. That was not the case with this book, and I feel highly motivated after finishing it.

Historia
Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by. Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

Great narrator! It’s a good story and we’ll-written, with clarity and a perceptive eye. If the reader prefers studied detail over action, this would be a good pick. Overall, I’d say it was a well-crafted book.

What a brilliant writer
Revisado: 04-17-22
Wow, I read a book every two weeks and it’s been many moons since I enjoyed a book so much. Anthony Doerr is a natural writer, such that his prose seems effortless. Of course, that’s never true, but therein lies the beauty of his writing. The book is beautiful, funny, and poignant. I must confess that I worked in Rome many years ago but I think anyone would enjoy his observations, his angst, and his self-deprecating humor. The fact that it’s read by the author makes it more intimate and real. I highly recommend this book!

Full of cringe worthy moments when one recognizes oneself in the description, this book is right on target. The narrator is stiff and unnatural, but it’s still worth listening to and learning!
