Virtual voice is unemotional crap. if you're going to cut out the cost of narration then lower the cost. Again... Virtual voice is crap.

Historia
With their vast cargo holds and a crew that could fill a city, the Greatships are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species. It has always been Marca Nbaro's dream to achieve the near-impossible: escape her upbringing and venture into space.

Historia
The Maritime Unit had landed in paradise. After a terrifying 10-year transit from Solar System aboard the Ashanti, the small band of oceanographers and marine scientists were finally settled. Perched on a reef five hundred kilometers out from shore, they were about to embark on the first exploration of Donovan's seas. For the 22 adults and nine children, everything is new, exciting, and filled with wonder as they discover dazzling sea creatures, stunning plant life, and fascinating organisms. But Donovan is never what it seems

The Donovan series is not to be missed.
Revisado: 08-22-21
There is a certain sadness as you approach the end of a beloved book. The same can be said of a series where each individual book builds on the past narrative and expands its worldview. Such is the case with "Adrift," the latest book in the Donovan series.
W. Michael Gear has somehow avoided the tendency for incremental releases in a series to become repetitive and the narrative to wane. Adrift not only continues to develop the storyline of beloved characters but moves the story offshore into what is literally the undiscovered country.
I highly recommend the entire series. Adrift, individually, is an excellent read, but it is a much richer read if the series is read in sequence. I envy those who are about to be introduced to Donovan and the challenges of being stuck on a planet where everything is trying to kill you. only some make it but hey, welcome to Donovan.

Not often do I feel like I need to thank an author
Revisado: 06-12-20
If you aren't familiar with Martha Wells' Murderbot diaries, you have missed something precious.
Its hard to convey how engaging is her writing style and how well her prose is brought to life by Kevin Free (narrator).
Network Effect is her first full length novel in the series and its very well written, even after patient anticipation having run through her earlier novellas. She brings to life a renegade security 'bot AI with a sense of humor who struggles with the oddities of the humans he serves, and eventually befriends.
Each of her writings are a romp that ends too soon. I actually hesitated to start Network Effect as I knew it would end. I listened to a chapter and then put some space between the next. Now I'm in the same place I was waiting for Network Effect as I wait for her next book.
I don't really write reviews. For this one I just wanted to say thanks, The wait was worth it.

Historia
Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and, most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman, she's never met anyone remotely like the ship's diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot; chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running; and Ashby, their noble captain.

Great Book - Fabulous Narrator
Revisado: 02-24-17
There are times when a narrator becomes the "voice" of a book series and subsequent books just don't sound "right" without them. I've run into this often. Then there are times when the narrator bring the book to life. I've run into that before but the narrator's style can at times drown out the narrative being lifted off the text.
It is uncommon, and a welcomed surprise, to find a voice for the words of the author that sounds as though it matches perfectly. Such is the case with Rachel Dulude's reading of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. The characters as read by Ms. Duludse are so distinctive and fit the text so well it become a most enjoyable read.

A New Series by a Narrator that Rocks
Revisado: 03-14-16
I listen to a LOT of audio books and I have never listened to a narrator that threw so much emotion (appropriate emotion) into the performance. It is like the main character comes alive from the narration. The book is an action filled ride that lasts less than a week in its entirety. Hope Book 2 is not far behind.

Short Story disguised as a novel.
Revisado: 06-19-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I must admit I purchased the book on the weight of the author's name alone ... and I paid for it. I believe I have listened to everything published by Alistair Reynolds and just as the story beings, it ends. My bad but 4 hrs is barely an introduction to most novels. I'll look more closely next time but seems to me Audible is marketing more and more relatively short audio books and charging full price (a full credit for those who subscribe). Don't want to publish the voice artist but like I said - 4 hrs - really?
What do you think your next listen will be?
Not a 4 hr "audio book" I'll tell you that.
Which scene was your favorite?
That's just it. The "book" laid out several directions in which it could go but when you got there - nothing - it just moved on. I think the best description of the plot would be "shallow" as it had no depth and no real character development.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
It seemed to be an intro to an actual novel. Then it ended.
Any additional comments?
Seems like this may have been a contractual requirement to produce a book and he did just that.
