Hard to follow
Revisado: 06-29-24
The format was an old man reminiscing and confusing. The story had too many coincidences, and protagonists were weak, should have destroyed their enemy who was a wicked cruel man. Instead one joined him. Made no sense.

This book explores the effect that bad parenting can have and the good effects of good parenting, and how once damaged children sometimes never recover.
I liked the book as it is set in the area that I live. I drive through Tularosa and other towns mentioned frequently, and am familiar with the mountains and volcanic fields. Its such a wonder anyone could have settled there and prospered. It is the jornada del muerte for sure.

How the West was tamed
Revisado: 03-15-23
Indian violence triggered the violence in this book. That is not to say what triggered the Comanches into horrifying violence against men women and children of their tribes. All in all the book shows some remorse over both sides, and the main characters display the strength of western Americans.

Historia
Arthur Youngblood Hawke, an ex-Navy man moves from rural Kentucky to New York to assault the citadel of New York publishing with his first novel, an oversized manuscript that becomes an instant success. Toasted by critics and swept along on a tide of popularity, he gives himself over to the lush life that gilds artistic success. Love comes with an affair with an older married woman and an unfulfilled flame with his editor, while wealth pours in with the publication of his second novel, and participation in real-estate developments.

Another Wouk masterpiece
Revisado: 11-01-22
In the 70’s I read The Winds of War and several years later War and Rembrance. They are my all time literary favorites. Youngblood Hawk is an American Tragedy , as the truth of government taxation malfeasance drove young Hawk to his death.
I enjoyed the book very much and it seemed to me that to a large extent, it was an autobiography of Herman Wouk, one of the greatest writers of our time.

That call begins a chase that takes the men from St. Joe into Kansas and down to Hell on the Border and the Fort Smith court of Hangin' Judge Issac Parker. In pursuit of the killers, the Marshals venture into the Oklahoma Territory, or "The Nations" as it was known at the time, following a path of bloodlust that began before the killing of Arkansas Bill Cole. Serial killers are nothing new, as the Marshals find out on the Cutthroat Trail.
