Do Not Be Fooled! This is not by Elizabeth Peters

This was so disappointing I have not finished it and probably won't. This is rare for me. Since it was listed as by Elizabeth Peters, I bought it thinking it was a group of short stories by Elizabeth Peters. It isn't. It is a group of short stories by other authors - one of which is supposedly about the Amelia Peabody and Emerson but not up to Elizabeth Peters' standard. Before each story there is a too long (in my opinion) and rambling introduction which for me was more annoying than entertaining. I would return this book but since I bought it for cash rather than a credit it is not eligible for return. Proceed with caution.

The story was enjoyable but the virtual voice narration needs a lot of improvement. The flat tone and lack of individuality of the different voices was distracting and disappointing. There was no way to tell even whether the speaker was mail or female.

If you read and enjoy the first book, you are doomed to disappointment and frustration. I loved this book and immediately looked for book 2. Imagine my disappointment to learn that, even though this book was released in 2013, there is no sign that a book 2 is even in the works - much less book 3. This was very disappointing, and having been "once burned" I will be very careful not to start another series by Maya Banks without making sure that the entire series has been completed. I would still love to read the rest of the trilogy if it ever appears.

Excellent books from Rhys Bowen are so much the norm that it seems repetitive to say "another great book" from her pen, but that is the fact. I enjoyed this very much. The two narrators do a very good job of bringing the characters to life. This dual tale of father and daughter at different times of their lives kept me interested and awake far into the night until I finished it. The mystery seems pretty simple to figure out, but don't count on it. There are twists and surprises right up to the last. It is a stand-alone book, so jump right in. You may wind up, like me, hoping for a follow-up to tell us more about how things go for Joanna.

This is the first book I've listened to by Laura Kinsale, but it certainly will not be the last! I couldn't put it down! This is a wonderful, gripping story of a man's struggle to save himself from an 1820's British mental institution. He was a Duke and a mathematical genius but had apparently suffered a stroke and while he was unable to speak or think clearly, his family placed him in the institution. He was helped by a Quaker girl and her father who had known him before his illness. It gradually became a troubled romance - troubled because, as a Quaker, she was not allowed to have any sort of relationship beyond a distance acquaintance with a worldly man. Not only was the story almost impossible to put down, but it was greatly enhanced by the narration of Nicholas Boulton. This was the first time I had heard him, also, but again I will be seeking him out in the future. His command of voices for each character and his ability to put exactly the right amount of emotion into the narration made this a book I will listen to again and again.

Any additional comments?

This looks like the beginning of a series I will enjoy following. When I realized it was YA, I expected it to be a little young for me, but I was happy to learn that it held my interest. The characters were young but engaging and the mystery kept me coming back. My suspicions switched back and forth and I was uncertain right up to the end - just the way I like it. Michelle Babb did her usual excellent job of bringing the characters to life so that I could always tell immediately which character was speaking. I am happy that I was offered this book free in exchange for an honest review and I can honestly say that I enjoyed listening to it and will watch for the second book in the series.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review and I can honestly say I enjoyed it very much. I've listened to several books about the ladies before and this story did not disappoint. With them around, even an innocent trip to the circus can turn into an adventure. Michelle Babb does her usual excellent job of bring the characters to life and making it a fully enjoyable, cozy listen.

A Glimpse of History and a Computer Game

I love books about time travel and am a computer buff so this book really appealed to me. It didn't realize at first that is meant to be a YA book, but I was not disappointed. I liked the characters and sympathized with both the cranky kid and the young tutor who struggled to help her by sharing glimpses of her faith along with grooming tips. Another real star of the story was the computer game which opened a window into the past life of a young woman who had lived in the house years before. It is a good story, told well by Michelle Babb. She gives the characters distinct voices so that I could always tell who was speaking and brings their emotions out so that they really come alive. If you like great drama and violence this is probably not the book for you, but for lovers of cozy mysteries, I recommend it .
I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Looking into family history can be risky. You never know what you will find. Darcy and Flora are sort of pushed into investigating their family by a mysterious package found by the contractor digging the foundation for their new home. A previously unknown mystery comes to light and their efforts to get to the truth of the story lead to an old love story set in WWI days, tragedy, and rumors of buried treasure. Throw in a couple of near-death experiences and a kidnapping and things get pretty lively. In the background to all this adventure, a new romance is growing for Darcy. This was an enjoyable listen for me. Michelle Babb does a fine job of bringing the various characters to life. I'm very glad she sent me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book I've listened to in this series. Usually I make a point of starting with book 1 of any series, but I found this one because it is read by Michelle Babb. I have listened to a number of books she reads and enjoyed them very much. This one is a "cozy" - a gently paced mystery with a little romance and humor thrown in. It is set in Oklahoma with some visits to Texas which appeals to me as I am a Texan. Michelle Babb's handling of the Oklahoma and Texas accent sounds natural to me, unlike some of the exaggerated accents of other readers. I enjoyed this story enough that I am going to look for additional stories in this series. This book was given to me by Michelle Babb in exchange for an honest review.
