Historia
In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (German for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism - but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.

Touching and inspiring
Revisado: 08-10-24
I am always inspired by the grit and heroism of Holocaust survivor’s stories and this book was no exception. What made it all the more enjoyable was the combination of a coming of age theme and a love story. The main characters were warm, innocent, and sincere. I enjoyed the narrator and the epilogue. This always seems to tie things up so neatly. Will read more of this author.

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Honest treatment of dire circumstances
Revisado: 07-28-24
Having had some experiences with Eastern Kentucky residents, I was interested in their own thoughts about the lives they have led, particularly from someone as successful as JD Vance. His narrative did not disappoint, as he writes and reads as he speaks. His honesty regarding not having the answers to the plight of those unfortunate enough to be dealt a weak hand was refreshing. However, his personal strength aided by mentors that he was smart enough listen to gives some rational hope for at least a partial solution. I do believe we have enough able mentors in communities to keep the Federal government from taking over this problem completely. I do hope that as vice president JD can begin to chart a pathway.

Worst audiobook I have ever listened to.
Revisado: 07-20-24
First of all the narrator was abysmal. The only time I have had an experience like her’s was an AI narration and I vowed to never do that again. Now, this person is on my “never again” list. Her shrill voice, unchanging tone with EVERY character, and angry overtones in all speech was grating as mentioned by many other reviewers.
Secondly, this book had moments but the character Nora was really badly framed. As a successful surgeon with years of experience both in training and work she was stupid beyond belief in her decisions. Just not believable and frustrating. She would not have committed the final crime attested to in the story.
I’m done with this author.

Historia
In the final chapter of the Tucker series, David Johnson introduces us to a new family – a family in need of the kind of help that only Tucker and her family can give. Benjamin Trevathan, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, and a speech impediment, is a boy saddled with adult responsibilities in the midst of his dysfunctional home. He provides the majority of care for his younger siblings and for his mother who is sick with cancer. His stepfather stays gone for days and weeks on drinking binges, only to come home to take out his anger and frustration on his family. This family’s nomadic life...

The abomination of AI narration!
Revisado: 02-22-24
Firstly, from the very beginning I was horrified that this wonderful story, the 5th in the series, was sullied by the narration which was faulty, distracting, and unworthy of this author’s contributions. I can’t believe it was approved in place of the stellar narrations of each and everyone of the previous 4 books. I will never listen to any AI narrated books in the future.
The story continues the saga of Tucker and her family as they share their meager possessions with a new family that moves in next door. It is inspiring, informative, and heartwarming as all of the earlier books have been. I only hope that David Johnson will continue more books in the series. We need his positive view of what human nature can deliver to us all.

Heart warming!
Revisado: 01-28-24
I have thoroughly and completely enjoyed both of the books of the series that I have already read. I intend to finish the series. Mr. Johnson has written a story series with unforgettable characters, full of humor, intelligence, and integrity. We need many more stories of this type to fill our days with enjoyment. I particularly enjoyed the scene of western Tennessee because it is often an area of the country that is minimized. Truly people with these types of characteristics live there today and carry on their lives. We should admire them and anyone who has the same values.

Important Topic for Everyone
Revisado: 12-22-23
I have enjoyed and learned from both books by Greg. The points and solutions offered are helpful reminders of the childish way our society is sliding to mediocrity. I especially liked the difference between free speech laws and free speech culture. I am reminded of the quote “ politics is downstream from culture” by Andrew Breitbart.
Although I imagine Rikki Schlott contributed to the narrative of the book, she was a poor choice to narrate it, her cadence to fast and droning. I did slow it down on my phone which helped but o found myself wishing I bought the Kindle version.

Heartwarming story of reclaiming your life
Revisado: 11-19-23
First time reading this author and not the last. This was a masterful telling of a tragic story of young girls controlled in their hometown by perversion and adults who knew better. It took the strength of conviction to overcome it, but in the end it was their pulling together enabling them to prevail. The dialog was gripping and took the reader inside their emotional space so that they (the reader) felt the triumph too. The pace of the story was even, gripping, and kept me interested to the very last lines.

Historia
In this book, which the author calls a "culmination of 30 years of work in the history of ideas", Sowell attempts to explain the ideological difference between liberals and conservatives as a disagreement over the moral potential inherent in nature. Those who see that potential as limited prefer to constrain governmental authority, he argues. They feel that reform is difficult and often dangerous, and put their faith in family, custom, law, and traditional institutions.

Heavy listening
Revisado: 11-15-23
I have heard Thomas Sowell speak several times and have always learned something. His knowledge and intelligence is impressive. However I must admit that this book was a slog to get through. His language and repeated references to scholars and philosophers from over 300 years ago was tedious and difficult to absorb. The premise of the book was worthwhile but painful for this 77 year old to wade through.

But as a favor to his ex-wife, he meets with the mother of twelve-year-old Joel, a boy poisoned by tainted children's medicine. One of his Best!
Revisado: 11-02-23
I have loved all of the author’s books I have read so far, but this is his very best yet. It ranks as one you have a hard time putting down. His pace, characters and storyline are riveting and make you wonder what is going to happen next. The reader is outstanding as well. Can’t wait to get his next book.
