JA Johnstone is NOT William W Johnstone!
Revisado: 04-06-24
I’m a die-hard western frontier reader. And William W Johnstone tops my list of authors in this genre. I’ve read numerous books by him, oftentimes with the tag “JA Johnstone” added as a co-author. And from what I read, she worked alongside her uncle when he was alive and writing his books. Sadly, William W died in 2004. Still, his books are timeless and live on.
This is the first book I’ve read with JA Johnstone going solo as an author and I have to say she just doesn’t have the writing grit of her uncle. By comparison her writing is bland and lacks the vibrancy and nuances William W Johnstone never failed to deliver. By comparison, it is boring, predictable, and sometimes stretches believability. I’m only half way through the book and not sure I want to finish it. Not when I can go on the hunt and find that hard to stop listening/reading book that keeps me on the edge of my seat to the very end! I’m accustomed to other authors like CJ Petit, Louis L’Amour, Max Brand to name a few. It’s hard to compete with these guys.
BTW, I’m a grandmother that loves this genre of books so I’m in no way being sexist.

The virtual narration was HORRIBLE!
Revisado: 02-06-24
I forced myself to listen to the first story so I could fairly judge the virtual narration. If you are an avid Audible fan, you’ll hate it. Flat, flat, flat. Speech inflections were messed up all over the place. I can’t imagine why the people who invented virtual narration thought this would be a good idea. The most thrilling part of listening to an Audible book, is the outstanding performance of the narrator! I will not be finishing this book. I don’t think even a 10 year old would put up with something this ridiculous.

Non stop action!
Revisado: 02-14-23
We’ll done realistic western frontier story. Breckinridge is a character you can’t help but like and root for even though he makes dumb decisions sometimes. He’s a magnet for trouble following him wherever he goes but that keeps the entertainment factor high. It’s hard to stop listening and you’ll find yourself continuing well into the wee hours of the morning! If you love western frontier stories, this one does not disappoint.

Awww … second chances (or third or fourth!) are so wonderful to contemplate and gives us all hope. Will North presents this novel in a believable, tasteful, and emotional format that keeps you turning the page or listening intently. Well done. Narrator was outstanding.

Historia
The Civil War tore at the very roots of our nation and destroyed most of a generation. In rural Arkansas, the Hancocks were devastated by that war. They not only lost everything, but experienced an unimaginable hell. How does a traumatized human being put themselves back together? Where does a person begin to heal his or her broken mind…and does one choose damnation or redemption? For the Hancock siblings: Doc, Sarah, Butler, and Billy, the American frontier becomes a metaphor for the wilderness within—raw, and capable of being shaped.

Excellent story of the effects of the Civil War …
Revisado: 10-27-21
Excellent! This story tells in graphic detail how the Civil War affected people who really had no say in whether or not it should take place. It change lives, most of it, not for the better. How foolish, from the perspective of both sides, to think that this war was going to be over quickly. So much unnecessary mayhem and suffering of innocent people. Well worth the credit.

Historia
This wasn’t the plan. Judge Herman Calvert, 88, never thought he’d outlive his beloved wife, Marie. Yet now he finds himself alone, a grieving widower, desperate for escape from the home they built together, where every turn brings a painful reminder of his late wife. So the judge retreats to his lake cabin in rural Wisconsin, a place where an old man can find peace and solitude. A place where nature can take its course. But something new has moved in.

OMG! This was a GREAT short story. Kevin Bacon as the narrator was spot on. I’m not usually in to short stories but I’ll definitely be trying more. I couldn’t stop once I started and in full adrenaline rush as the story came to its end. I highly recommend this Audible Original!

Storyline engaging and interesting. Narrator mispronouncing words she should have known was distracting and annoying. Who mispronounces hearth as “herth” and rakish as “rackish”?

Great book, disappointing narrator ...
Revisado: 11-04-17
I love the storyline of this book. I've read many Dean Koontz books but I have to say this one is my favorite. The way Koontz weaves the characters into the plot of the book creates a masterpiece. I give the book, itself, 5 stars without hesitation.
The narrator selected for this book was just plain horrible! I was shocked that such a book, so rich in diverse characters, would be narrated with such monotone and boredom. It was painful to me to listen to it! I enjoyed the book more when I simply read it which I've done more than once.
It says on the front of the audiobook "Read by Anne Twomey." That is correct but I was looking for the "performance" that this book deserves. I selected this book for my trial period but if I had had to pay for it, I'd want my money back after the first chapter. Ms. Twomey's narration style for this book is so bad, I would strongly recommend it be performed by a narrator that can do this book justice.
I am a prolific reader and with my kindle unlimited subscription (which I love love love!) I've read over 100 books, mostly narrated. Many of these authors were not nearly as well-known as Koontz but the narrators were true performers. One book that comes to mind is The Disenchanted Widow by Christina McKenna. It was masterfully narrated by Anne Flosnik. The skill in which Ms. Flosnik used her voice to portray the different characters, provides an outstanding example of how a narrated book should be performed.
