Historia
Henry never realized he was special. Sure, he’s an engineer who served his country, but when the virus hit, he found himself alone in a nearly empty world. That’s the key, though: nearly empty. There’s no one left who has the technical know-how to make the world run again...except for Henry. For humanity to survive, he will have to rebuild society out of the motley crew of survivors. It might be impossible, but at the same time, Henry has always loved a challenge.

Historia
In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: Global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off. Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

It had potential...
Revisado: 10-24-22
The premise is interesting, but it seemed geared to finding a way to get a group into a cave, and rant about how evil politicians are. The story got hollowed out to make space (WAY too much space), for preaching and extolling the virtues of being a gun fetishist.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Books 1 - 4, RC Bray channels "The Great Gazoo"
Revisado: 03-25-22
Always entertaining with RC Bray's narration. RC Bray channels "The Great Gazoo" from the Flintstones and actor George McCready, for the most entertaining (and smartest), character in the Universe, near the end of Book 1.
If I had noticed that the series was at 14 books, I would have stopped at the free first one, and been satisfied, but the "Silver Beer Can" caught my attention and sucked me into continuing on in the series.
If you're old enough to remember the cartoon series, The Flintstones, you'll get it. "Skippy" is much more dynamic though. The other character I hear is actor George McCready. You'll need to be a bit older to remember him, but the voice adds a lot!
As I say, the series seems to be stuck in circles, but merry-go-rounds can be fun too.
I made it through 4 and am packing it in.
This is a credit sucking series, lots of fun moments with "Skippy" and his comments on the human condition, but many of the same scenarios repeated in the first three, and by the reviews, that continues.
It's definately worth the free listen and a couple more if you do the Kindle discount, but the "series" has too much filling.
I'll wait for a LAST book, and if that satisfies, I may do those in-between.
BTW, if you are all in for the series, get Kindle Unlimited, then the Audible books are $8.

They are coming. The countdown has begun. First visible only as blips on a telescope image, the discovery of objects approaching from Jupiter's orbit immediately sets humanity on edge. NASA doesn't even bother to deny the alien ships' existence. The popular Astral space app (broadcasting from the far side of the moon and accessible by anyone with Internet) has already shown the populace what is coming.

ARGH! Frustratingly bloated and boring
Revisado: 02-24-22
I thought that things would eventually get moving at some point, but I was wrong.
The narration is great, but I would thank that for him, reading this aloud would be like experiencing a long, slow root canal.
Just not worth the time, even if it's free in the Plus catalog.

Swiss cheese Sci-Fi without flavor. Great reviews?
Revisado: 11-08-21
I bought this at the very end of the buy one get one sale, without looking at the bad reviews. They were spot on. Don't trust the STARS! Looking at the authors other titles, I spotted "Lost Time" - and that is what listening to this was, lost time.
Other reviewers have remarked that "Fake Reviews" are killing Audible. This series seems good evidence of that. It's hard to imagine people rating this with five stars, all around the same time.... Hmmmm....
Really disappointed because the second title that I purchased in the sale with this was really good,

Revisado: 01-05-20
Fun in a different voice & extras, but I like RC's voices. It would have been nice to hear the author's notes and story of the publication, as well as corrections that he's brought to light in various places.
Still a favorite that I've listened to many times, and love Will's narration on many books, but R.C. Bray was perfection.

Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Historia
Imagine that Alice had walked into a bar instead of falling down the rabbit hole. In the tradition of J. R. Moehringer’s The Tender Bar and the classic reportage of Joseph Mitchell, here is an indelible portrait of what is quite possibly the greatest bar in the world—and the mercurial, magnificent man behind it. The first time he saw Sunny’s Bar, in 1995, Tim Sultan was lost, thirsty for a drink, and intrigued by the single bar sign among the forlorn warehouses lining the Brooklyn waterfront.

One great book where "the listen" is even better..
Revisado: 05-23-16
Where does Sunny's Nights rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top 10
What did you like best about this story?
There are plenty of great reviews of the content and I agree with most. Some did not appreciate the winding down of the story, but I think that it's fitting for the arc of the story. As for the Audible version, the voice of the writer is enhanced by the intimate knowledge of the people in the book, by the narrator and adds a great deal to the experience. A gem.
What does Robert Malloch bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I purchased the Audible.com version, well worth the one credit. This was a very fun listen, as I had found a youtube clip of "Sunny" and the narration by Robert Malloch is spot on. As a frequenter of "Sunny's Bar" Robert Malloch seems to capture the voices and the emotions of the stories perfectly. It was a treat to listen to these marvelous stories and the authors journey. Even though I have never visited the bar, nor the Red Hook area of Brooklyn, the combination of listening to this gem and using Google Maps/Earth, it was a great tour of the places as they are now and remembrances of what it was like over the past decades and century. Tim Sultan has given both Sunny Balzano and us a great gift.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Mandala.

In every generation, certain writers are chosen to be protectors of The Legendarium, a metaphysical library that exists at the nexus of the multiverse. Inside this library are doorways that lead to every world ever created in literature. There are forces of evil constantly at work to destroy the library and send the world back into an age of darkness. Now, in a time of growing illiteracy, two heroes are chosen to defend The Legendarium.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

It did not catch me
Revisado: 06-14-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was OK time spent, but I got really sick of the voice. The new take on "Starship Troopers" was a good idea, but there was nothing really new that caught me. After "The Andrioid's Dream" & after enjoying the Swedish geriatric novel "The 100 Year Old Man Who Crawled Out the Window..." I really thought I was going to enjoy this, but I think that the voice turned me off. I wish I would have read the print version instead.
If you’ve listened to books by John Scalzi before, how does this one compare?
I LOVED "The Android's Dream" and the narration!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of William Dufris?
I don't know. Wilford Brimley?
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Starship Troopers may have tainted me, so likely no. It would be really hard to have the elderly & young, as the same actors.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed parts, very much and there were some good emotional moments. I know that this is the first in a series, but it's likely my last.
