Incredibly Helpful
Revisado: 05-23-23
I’ve know about manifesting for years, but this is the first book to make it seem tangible and doable. I will definitely be listening again and again as I work to create the life I want!

Historia
Part memoir and part cultural critique, Darkly: Blackness and America's Gothic Soul explores American culture's inevitable gothicity in the traces left from chattel slavery. The persistence of white supremacy and the ubiquity of Black deaths feed a national culture of terror and a perpetual undercurrent of mourning.

A solid listen overall
Revisado: 08-16-22
I’d read this book in a physical version a year or so ago, but was excited to find it as an audiobook! I love the information presented within and Leila’s writing style. That said, the performance of the material left a little to be desired, with jarring mispronunciations and occasionally stilted delivery.

"[ Memnoch] is one of Rice's most intriguing and sympathetic characters to date. . . . Rice ups the ante, taking Lestat where few writers have ventured: into heaven and hell itself. She carries it off in top form."( The Seattle Times)

Theologically dense, but beautifully done
Revisado: 12-22-21
I really appreciated this book, which I found to be a curious blend of Paradise Lost and The Divine Comedy, but done with Anne Rice’s personal touch. It’s not what one would expect from the preceding books, however, so anyone looking for a straightforward vampire story is going to be pretty disappointed after the first quarter of the novel. Still, it’s a book I’ve already recommended to friends, particularly those interested in theology and philosophy.

Historia
A global movement guided by love. Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies. The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength.

A wonderful message overall!
Revisado: 04-13-21
I enjoyed this book, the messages within, and the warmth with which Sonya delivered it. The vocal pauses and stumbles can get a bit distracting at times, but I don’t fault her for it. While it might have benefitted from a second take, I appreciate her efforts and hearing the author speak for themselves.
