Something different
Revisado: 03-11-25
Ashley asked me to leave her a review and the end of this book, so here goes... This book covers the less well known killers and I appreciate that. You will learn something new when you listen. I can tell she did a LOT of research and offers several possibilities in several of the accounts. I liked it!

Historia
World War II is usually seen as a titanic land battle, decided by mass armies, most importantly those on the Eastern Front. Phillips Payson O'Brien shows us the war in a completely different light. In this compelling new history of the Allied path to victory, he argues that in terms of production, technology, and economic power, the war was far more a contest of air and sea than of land supremacy.

The "Bean Counter" review of WW2
Revisado: 10-22-24
Thank God this bean counter was not running WW2!
This guy completely discounts the outstanding achievements of what he calls the "Ground war".
I could not disagree more! As with all bean counters, he fails to see that NUMBERS are not the only way to measure something.
This book will remind you of all the bean counters you have had to deal with in your life.
I did learn some things, however, the disrespect he has shown to our fighting personal on the ground made me angry thru most of the book.

Max "gored" everybody's Ox
Revisado: 04-01-24
Well, It is a good history. He even spent some time on the war in the east (not a lot).
I guess he was equal in blaming and pointing out shortcomings of EVERYONE involved. I think he would have benefited from "being there" before he started casting so many stones; that said, he did seem "fair".
There is some information that was new to me.
I think it is well worth the time to listen. The last chapter (the wrap up) is the best.

Historia
A revelation for Moby-Dick devotees and neophytes alike, Ahab's Rolling Sea is a chronological journey through the natural history of Melville's novel. From white whales to whale intelligence, giant squids, barnacles, albatross, and sharks, Richard J. King examines what Melville knew from his own experiences and the sources available to a reader in the mid-1800s, exploring how and why Melville might have twisted what was known to serve his fiction.

Moby Dick is a NOVEL!
Revisado: 03-13-24
Dear Mr. King,
I was sure you forgot to read the title page where it must have said Moby Dick is a NOVEL!
In the 5th chapter you mention that it is a novel, so I have no explanation of why you wrote this book as if it was a scientific treaties.
Definition of Novel:
A STORY (a TALL TELL)...
If you treat all novels like you have Moby Dick; I am afraid you will develop a VERY strange (and wrong) view of the world around you.
The only redeeming quality of this book is to inform the reader with Melville's travels before writing Moby Dick.
God help us if you do Jules Vern next!

Revisado: 12-28-23
Well, the story is pretty good. The reason I got this book is to see how "Virtual Voice" would sound. It was not terrible. The normal voice inflections from a good reader is missing and there were a few mispronounced words but overall, not bad. It is worth a listen.

Historia
Few events have ever shaken a country in the way that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor affected the United States. After the devastating attack, Japanese forces continued to overwhelm the Allies, attacking Malaya with its fortress of Singapore, and taking resource-rich islands in the Pacific - Borneo, Sumatra, and Java - in their own blitzkrieg offensive. Allied losses in these early months after America's entry into the war were great, and among the most devastating were those suffered during the Java Sea Campaign.

Panful review of the beginning of Pacific War
Revisado: 05-09-23
It is hard to listen to a book that in great detail covers the disastrous start of the Pacific War with the Japan!
There is a reason why this part of the war is covered very little in the books about the Pacific War. It was NOT "our finest hour"!
It is good that someone took the time in GREAT DETAIL to tell us the story. Will we learn from our mistakes? Doubtful

Just how LONG is a "SHORT story"?
Revisado: 03-20-23
This a very good collection. It is well read and enjoyable. It was marred do to the VERY long "short story" at the very end. The last story was VERY long and it would have best have been left off this collection. Some of the other stories were OUTSTANDING! worth the listen!

Should have been named "American MILITARY rifle"
Revisado: 01-18-23
Well, he spends very little time on the evolution of rifles other than military. There has been terrific advances over 300 years; only some of those advances reflected in what rife the military is using.
A good book overall, but he often gets off "in the weeds" about politics and politicians. I know some is necessary; but I thought he went "a little far" with some of it.
I did learn something (or two) so I would give him credit for his research.
