Not “Tuscan”
Revisado: 12-22-24
The story is suitable gripping, but other than references to Etruscan treasures, the story doesn’t touch Tuscany. Takes place mostly in Corsica.
The AI narrator is just above the acceptable level of quality.

Historia
It is the greatest work of English prose ever written, and it is no coincidence that the translation was made at the moment “Englishness” and the English language had come into its first passionate maturity. Boisterous, elegant, subtle, majestic, finely nuanced, sonorous, and musical, the English of Jacobean England has a more encompassing idea of its own reach and scope than any before or since. It is a form of the language that drips with potency and sensitivity. The age, with all its conflicts, explains the book.

Cannot finish due to narration
Revisado: 12-06-24
To the extent I am able to focus on the content, it’s not bad at all. The narrator, however, manages to be dull and irritating at the same time. I finally decided to abandon this and will go for the print version of this book.

Historia
A young Swedish immigrant finds himself penniless and alone in California. The boy travels East in search of his brother, moving on foot against the great current of emigrants pushing West. Driven back again and again, he meets naturalists, criminals, religious fanatics, swindlers, Indians, and lawmen, and his exploits turn him into a legend. Diaz defies the conventions of historical fiction and genre, offering a probing look at the stereotypes that populate our past and a portrait of radical foreignness.

Feels like I “endured” more than enjoyed the story. The narrator is good, but there is not one character that engenders liking or care.

What would happen if you quit your life for a year? In a pre-COVID-19 world, the Wheelan family decided to find out; leaving behind work, school, and even the family dogs to travel the world on a modest budget. Equal parts "how-to" and "how-not-to" - and with an eye toward a world emerging from a pandemic - We Came, We Saw, We Left is the insightful and often hilarious account of one family's gap-year experiment.

The story is predictable, the characters a bit blah, and the narration becomes hysterical for some of the characters.

Questionable Storyline
Revisado: 07-22-24
If you just want a mindless action story that takes you around the world, this would do. If you even want to apply a tiny bit of sense to the logic behind the story, you’d be annoyed.

Historia
When her boss tells her about the discoveries in a cramped, decrepit apartment in the ninth arrondissement, Sotheby' s continental furniture specialist April Vaught does not hear "dust" or "rats" or "shuttered for 70 years". She hears Paris. She hears escape. She cannot board the plane fast enough. When she arrives, April quickly learns the apartment is more than just some rich hoarder' s repository. Beneath the dust and cobwebs and stale perfumed air is a literal goldmine - and not just in terms of actual dollars.

Not Bad Overall
Revisado: 06-01-24
There are two parallel stories that touch each other. I didn’t care for the 19th century diaries because I didn’t find the characters likable. The present day story is not bad. As others have said, the narrator’s fake French accent was annoying, but not so bad as to make me abandon the book.

His name was Feliks. He came to London to commit a murder that would change history. A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

I bought this because it’s Ken Follett, but just can’t get into it. Story moves very slowly, and I find it difficult to engage. I gave up after the first chapter.

Narration took away from a good story
Revisado: 11-01-23
The narrator performs an accent that is distinctly not Vermont, for characters who are supposed to be in Vermont. It was distracting.
