What started off as an intriguing, if dark take on an "isekai" and "battle royale" genre fell apart pretty much as soon as the "contest" part started. Terribly rushed, what should have easily been at LEAST three books, if not five, got crunched down to be completely resolved in the second half of the book...and a sizeable portion of that off-screen during a week long coma.

The only especially likeable character was the elf waifu, who was the only one besides the protagonist to really get anything in the way of a character motivation or personality. One or two other characters had some interesting potential but simply weren't in the story long enough for anything to come of it...and Vix, the one the competition is all about, manages to somehow be complerely unlikeable in virtually every way and yet is still the object of the MC's efforts--granted, some characters do acknowledge her as insane, but the MC is still adamant on becoming her husband, more so than simply making it out of an insane situation alive.

Exploring that could have still become interesting but, instead, the whole thing wraps up in a single chapter at the end...and yet still manages to have no real ending, so much as come to a full stop.

And the delightful bow atop this thorough waste of time of a package is, of course, Virtual Voice that can't understand the difference between "wind" as in moving air, or winding a clock, in a story heavily featuring air-focused elves.

I want my 5 hours back.

No bones about it, the universe of this series is basically darker, edgier That George Lucas Sci Fi Setting. That being said, it's a more engaging space romp than anything the Mouse House has put out since taking the reins.

The first half of this particular bundle reads more like a standard modern military war story with just enough tech and some frog aliens to remind us it's in space, but in the second half/book the Space Fights feel really kicks into full swing with smarmy smuggler and bounty hunters in archaic yet still top of the line battle armor. Yet as you get further in the ties back to the first book become more clear and important. All in all, solid time spent if you want to scratch that Astral Combats itch and don't mind a focus on shooty action and slick space battles with nary a laser sword in sight.
