Historia
Dante Jacoby is a slave to the trappings of the modern world. Twenty-six years old and hopelessly addicted to booze, cigarettes, and procrastination, he’s squandered every ounce of his potential. His corporate raider father, Dorian, reaches the end of his tether and cuts Dante off as heir to the Jacoby family fortune. His mother, Fiona, is smarter than her husband: she hasn’t spoken to Dante in months. But Dante’s no victim. He knows he brought this on himself.

Fun
Revisado: 01-31-25
A bit slow in the beginning, and I am not a big fan of the structure used in the middle, where chapters alternate between the "present" of the story, and what is then in the past, his training months. But all in all, a good thriller.

Historia
Vampires have always lived in Eastern Europe. But with the fall of the Soviet Union, they began to spread across the continent, then the world, turning whole populations into vampires - or human cattle. Having overrun India, the far East, and the great cities of North and South America, the forces of Night are now spreading into the countryside to consolidate their conquest.

Good
Revisado: 05-03-24
This one has bit of a cliffhanger ending - not a full one, the story ends, but it leaves a wide open door for the story to continue, which presumably is not going to happen since it has been years and no sequels. But that is pretty much my only complaint.
This is horror but the kind of horror I like, where the victims of the monsters seem to have a chance. I have gotten rather tired of the nobody survives, the only question being in which order and how do the characters die versions (or just one does, and then gets killed in the sequel). That got too common during the last decades, so getting something different is now always very nice.

When fairy tales don’t have a happy ending. Welcome to the world of the fae, the real fae, not the beautiful creatures of nighttime children’s stories or animated movies. In the pages of this book, you won’t find tales of fanciful creatures dancing, playing, and singing. Instead, author and researcher, Gemma Jade will present a compelling theory of how these creatures may play a sinister role in the thousands of missing person cases that occur each year in our national parks and other parts of the world’s woodlands and forests. So, come and take a walk through the darker world of ...

Nice but
Revisado: 03-05-24
But let's just start with the fact that all of her instructions for how to avoid the fae don't make all that much sense. Like what she says about steel: if having that with you would work as well as pure iron no hunter would ever disappear due to, or have any kind of supernatural experience, in the woods because they of course - as well as most hikers - will carry a knife. Or several.
Personally I'm more inclined towards the ultraterrestrial hypothesis anyway.
The virtual voice is surprisingly tolerable.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Violet Parker has one request on her list for Santa - to make it home to her kids. Unfortunately, “home” is also the lair of her life-long nemesis, her sister Susan, aka the devil’s concubine. Standing in Violet’s way is Old Man Winter, who slammed the Black Hills with a show-stopping blizzard. However, a little snow isn’t going to ground her sleigh, not with family counting on her to deliver Santa’s goods.

No monsters in this one
Revisado: 11-27-23
But a fun Christmas story. So if you listen to this series as much for the characters and their interactions as you do for the scary supernatural part you will probably still enjoy this as much, but if you want the monsters maybe skip this one.
And maybe this is far enough into the series to say, without spoiling much, how relieved I have been to find one series with strong romantic subplot in it that did not start with a love triangle for the main character, as in having her trying to choose between two hunks. That has become a way too common plot - some chick with low self esteem, constantly telling how not-attractive she is, suddenly getting two or more alpha males interested, probably having hot sex with both/all while moaning how bad she is doing that but oh, she just can't decide... was a relief when that didn't happen. If it had I would propably have ditched the series then and there because I'm done with those stories. Violet is much more fun - and easier to like - without that problem.

Nice cozy
Revisado: 09-26-23
The only problem is that the clues have been made so obvious to the reader that when the protagonist keeps missing them she starts to look irritatingly stupid. But if you can tolerate that this is a pretty nice cozy.

Very good Heinlein
Revisado: 07-14-23
You now need to take this as an alternate world story, except for a few of the earlier gadgets the main character invents (robot vacuum cleaner...) most of the "future" inventions etc haven't aged well (plus the future is 1970 and 2001).
But it's a very good story, with an interesting plot and likeable characters, and nasty enough villains. This has always been among my favorites, maybe partly because its smaller scale, it's only about one man trying to deal with a crime where he was the victim, and one of the obstacles is time.
And you just have to love Petronius Arbiter.

Ghost hunter Verity Long is overdue for a little R&R (rest and romance) with her boyfriend, Ellis, and a vintage train trip through the Tennessee mountains seems like just the ticket. The Sugarland Express carries history and nostalgia in every compartment, and Verity is determined to enjoy it - without ghostly interference. But the ghosts have other plans… On a dark, desolate night nearly a century ago, the train was stranded in the mountains, and a young woman was found stabbed to death in her locked compartment.

Good enough
Revisado: 06-30-23
These are pretty nice cozy mysteries, with ghosts, and generally speaking I like them well enough. The only problem I have is with some bits of the main character. It was fine that she had some - well, quite a bit - tendency towards near hysterics and stupidity in the first books when she was still completely unfamiliar with what she was dealing with, and trying to do, but I think she should be written as a bit less so by this time as she is supposed to be more experienced. But she is still rather dense a lot of the time, and gets flustered rather easily. It gets a bit tiresome. Admittedly more so when you binge, I bought about two thirds of the series from a sale. But right now I think I am getting more fond of her arch enemy, the mother of her boyfriend, just because Virginia is written as somebody who can act fairly collected no matter what the situation.

Okay
Revisado: 06-17-23
Nice. More law of attraction than what is usually called magic. For me the big problem is the narrator who has a nice voice but sounds way too fake enthusiastic, and like he is obviously trying to sell something, and maybe something he doesn't exactly take seriously himself. A used car salesman? With this kind of material I personally prefer a more matter of fact approach, not trying to sweettalk me into trying it. Hey, I already bought the book, just tell me about the system.

Idiot ball
Revisado: 01-10-23
What writers seem to call when most of the plot happens because the main character is acting stupid: the protagonist is carrying the idiot ball. This is the second in the series I am listening to, and again the plot seems to pretty much start mostly because (MINOR SPOILER, but it doesn't really give away anything important about the plot) the protagonist doesn't insist on talking right away to the police when she should have but keeps meekly waiting her turn. In the first book most of the plot happened because she kept forgetting to tell vital clues to the police, or just plain didn't realize they were clues in the first place and so didn't tell about them to police. What makes this somewhat more irritating is that her background is told to have included a lot of travel in all kinds of trouble spots of the world with her late husband, working for a charitable organization, and being very successful with that job by herself too, so you'd think she should be sharper and be able to act in a more decisive manner.
Also, an added irritant, her background story actually has a detail that would give her a pretty valid reason for her scatterbrainedness: her husband died in a riot. So, what if she had also been caught in that riot, had been hit on the head, and been since suffering from some minor brain injury that makes her forget things, and can make it hard for her to concentrate from time to time? It would have been so easy to add to the story, and it could have been explained as something that somewhat comes and goes, so she has an episode when the plot needs that... okay, since the stories are relatively relaxing otherwise and I like the reader, plus the parts following her police officer niece are nice and occasionally the protag's scatterbrainedness causes a funny scene or two, I suppose that will be my headcanon from now on. The old lady has a brain injury but doesn't want to talk about it or even admit it to herself. It's somewhat nicer than thinking she is suffering from the beginning signs of old age dementia.
So yes, if you can tolerate a somewhat idiotic protagonist these are nice enough cozies.

Revisado: 01-09-23
Tim Curry' performance is, of course, great, and made me think that the story, if made into a movie once again, might actually make for a great comedy adventure, with the whiny damsel in distress Axel and overwhelming, and sometimes overwhelmingly stupid, professor. Unfortunately the more faithfull movie adaptations of the story have mostly tried to turn the characters into a bit more heroic versions, and the plot into a more serious toned adventure. But they are really quite funny!
