An Inferior Prototype to Dune
Revisado: 03-22-25
I'll admit there are potentially interesting concepts that had my attention, and even if some of the ideas reminded me of some stuff that Herbert would utilize in his well know sci-fi epic, it all still could have been enough to make this story stand-out on its own. However, whenever it detailed the religious aspects of the narrative--with particular focus on Orne's psi development--I felt hopelessly lost, resulting in the ending falling flat for me.
Also, there's an noticeable issue with the structure of the story itself; from what I understand, the novel expands on at least four different short stories, and it is kind of easy to tell where one ends and another starts with how disjointed some of the transitions are with the flow. There's one particular--and pretty sudden--transition that is was obviously done without proper planning on the pacing. Another issue that I had with the book was some of the character dialog, where it featured plenty of corny remarks that I find myself hard to believe any living person would say out load unironically.
However, I will give it credit for having a short length. If anyone's is curious about Frank Herbert's work, then this is a pretty light journey. Perhaps others might understand Orne's Psi development better than I did.
NOTE: Despite this review referencing and implying certain elements recur in Frank Herbert's Dune, this book is neither set in or apart of the Dune series.

Nothing will ever be the same again. Having successfully averted a mutiny and the near-discovery of the Exit Plan, the White Flower II's new captain is now in charge of fulfilling that plan to its end, and there's only a little more than a month to prepare. But there's a problem—Tesko doesn't want to deliver the terraformer to the pirates as agreed. She wants it for the geroo, and she will not take no for an answer. But it's not as simple as kicking the pirates out, as both crews need each other. For now.

This is a Holiday Classic for a Good Reason
Revisado: 11-23-24
I seldom get tired of going through any take of a Christmas Carol, so revisiting the source material was inevitable. In this day and age, it is easy to get acquainted with the narrative structure for this tale--even just by pop culture alone. But after all this time, it still holds up as one of the best and most convincing redemption story arcs in existence. Seriously, it is impressive to starts off the story with one of the most vile characters conceivable and have them changed into one of the most joyful, lively, and surprisingly most compassionate characters of the whole cast.
And--let's be honest--it is even rarer to be underwhelmed by any performance from Tim Curry.
Truly recommended to anyone.

A Coming-Age-Story of Discovery with Dinosaurs
Revisado: 08-07-23
Even though there is a minor layer of predictability because of Afsan being this story's equivalent to the real-life astronomer Galileo Galilei, the setting by itself is interesting enough to hook any sci-fi loving reader to learn more about it as the protagonist finds out the truth of his world, and the possible extinction of the sapient dinosaur species that live on it if he doesn't attempt to inform the highly religious population about the inevitable end of their homeworld. I have some gripes about the ending, which I can't describe without going into spoiler territory, but overall, it was still an intriguing journey.

Historia
Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Mostly Decent Stories of Humanity Botching Mars
Revisado: 06-19-23
Each chapter of this book is its own short story, all ranging from humorous and absurd to serious and thrilling. Outside of some minor continuity issues and a illogical choice that the human colonists of Mars make when things go south on Earth, I would say that it's still interesting to see Bradbury's interpretation of our neighboring planet, along with the exploration and colonizing process by the people of Earth. The narrator did a decent job at reading the collected stories, and has a range of different voices.
Even if it's not perfect, it's still an interesting trip.

You can think of this edition as the director’s cut of Long Way Home. Specifically, the director cut all of the images. This bold new direction redefines how the entire work is approached. For instance, the listener will not have any pictures to refer to, forcing them instead to imagine not just 99 percent of the story entirely in their head, but a full 100 percent. Publishers everywhere are taking notice: is a picture-free novel the future of the industry? Some say it's already here. But I say, with no hyperbole whatsoever, it started with Long Way Home.

Fun and Erotic Furry Escapades in Space
Revisado: 06-07-23
This journey has enough silly but well-written saucy scenarios to satisfy any furry deviant, and more than enough interesting but perilous situations to make anyone anxious on what's ahead for our main protagonist, Jungo, and it is all tied together by the amazing performance of the audio book's narrator.
If space operas or furry literature are your jam, and you don't mind things getting spicy, then I would recommend this book.

An Anthology of Space Opera Tales for Furries
Revisado: 03-28-23
It might have taken me longer to get through this than I thought, but all of the stories in this collection are well written, with each one detailing the experiences of multiple interesting characters and species struggling to live a harsh universe, while either attempting to make a better life for themselves or at the least try to avoid making things worse. And it's all brought to life due to the talent of the audio book's narrator.
If you're interested in space operas and have a preference for anthropomorphic animals people over humans, then you don't want to pass up on this.

Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Larry Niven's novel, Ringworld, is the winner of the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

An Amazing World. The Story, However...
Revisado: 10-18-22
While there might of been something that didn't click with me, I just felt more underwhelmed than expected for a book with such an interesting concept, and a Hugo to boast about. Also, I do agree with most reviews that there is enough merit to put it's depiction of women into question.
With the exception some kind of interference going on in the background, the narrator did a pretty decent job.

Kanti had spent many sleepless nights torturing himself with thoughts of the day when he would give up on returning to Tish. Old and grey, back-stooped from decades of labor, he would try to get up out of bed, and change his mind. Why bother? He couldn’t have been more wrong. He was still young, his pelt still tanned, and his back didn’t hurt when he rose. Everything had conspired to keep the two lovers apart: rivals, foes, distance. Now, he needs his friends’ help more than ever if he wants his old life back.

A Long Overdue Praise for Gre7g's Book and Trilogy
Revisado: 10-02-22
I've been hesitant to write a review for Fair Trade out of fear of it coming off as generic. I think I finally have something to say that I'll feel satisfied with;
If I'm thinking back to Fair Trade favorably over 10 months after finishing it, and still recall the events of the book vividly, including; the world that Kanti is placed into and the people living in it, his goals that he wants to achieve, and the hardships and obstacles that he must face to achieve said goals, then this is a book that you don't want to skip. Whether if you're a fan of space operas, furry fiction, or if you've managed to get through the two previous books.
As with Skeleton Crew and Small World, the performance was solid. Every voice felt distinguishable, but there were parts were I thought that the audio was having a stroke whenever the narrator pronounced some of the names for the Sourang. Not a complaint, by the way.

The story me at the edge of my seat through out the whole book. All of the characters were interesting, and sometimes even relatable. The narrator did another great job with their performance. I'm looking forward to what will happen next for the crew of the White Flower II.
