Historia
Two of her four kids may be out of the nest, but Lucy Stone knows only too well that mothering is a lifetime commitment. At least that commitment means she gets to kick back and enjoy a fancy Mother's Day brunch - that is, before the festivities are interrupted by a nasty scene between two moms feuding over the popularity of their teenage daughters. Even after witnessing that scene though, Lucy never expects to see actual blood spilled.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 03-16-25
I've been making my way through this series and mostly enjoy them, but this one became really irritating with its heavy left-leaning agenda. I don't read fiction to get the author's viewpoint on various social issues shoved down my throat and this series has a tendency to do that at times. This was one of the worst with its pointed pro-choice and pro-gun control rhetoric. Also, trigger warning for those who don't like to read about minors being kidnapped or murdered.
That said, I read these for the small-town flavor and quirky characters and Lucy's interaction with her family. I'd like to know when Toby got married. You'd think it would have been mentioned, since he's Lucy's eldest and we got a whole book about the wedding of her best friend's daughter.
One last thing, this seems to be at least partially based on or inspired by a real-life murder that occurred. Not sure how I feel about that, especially since the author doesn't even acknowledge it anywhere. But there are too many similarities to be coincidental. Changes are made to the motive, of course, since it wouldn't have fit in with the author's liberal agenda. (Search Juliet Hulme murder, if curious.)
I'll give the series another chance, but I hope it doesn't continue in this vein.

Historia
The locals in Tinker’s Cove are busy planning haunted-house parties and ghostly galas, and Lucy Stone is whipping up orange-frosted cupcakes, recycling tutus for her daughters’ costumes, helping her son with his pre-teen rebellion, and breast-feeding her brand-new baby. But amid the fun, something really scary is going on: An arsonist is loose, and when the latest fire claims the life of the owner of the town’s oldest house, arson turns into murder.

Now this is more like it!
Revisado: 02-05-25
After a serious departure in the last book, the series lands firmly back in the cozy mystery genre with this one. Lucy's husband is back to being his usual affable self and the townsfolk are all there with their quirky ways. We get to meet the new baby and Lucy isn't sexually assaulted by anyone in this book, which is a nice change. What kept me from giving the story 5 stars is the last hour or so. Lucy makes a really stupid decision for very little discernable reason and it nearly costs her life. Then, amid some contrived circumstances that never get explained, she makes an even more stupid decision and nearly dies again. This really, really annoyed me. That said, the series seems to hit its stride again and is firmly back in cozy mystery territory, which is a huge relief. I wasn't sure if I'd continue with it after the last book, but I'm glad I gave it another try.

Historia
As if baking holiday cookies, knitting a sweater for her husband, and making her daughter’s angel costume for the church pageant weren’t enough things for Lucy Stone’s busy Christmas schedule, she’s also working nights at the famous mail-order company Country Cousins. But when she discovers Sam Miller, its very wealthy founder, dead in his car from an apparent suicide, the sleuth in her knows something just doesn’t smell right.

Nice Start to a Cozy Series
Revisado: 02-02-25
I'd read some of the later books in this series and decided to start at the beginning and go through the whole thing. It was a good, solid start to a cozy series, introducing the town and all its quirky characters, as well as Lucy's family and her penchant for sleuthing. A couple of times, I was really annoyed with the heroine for doing really stupid stuff or for seeming to put her kids in danger in pursuit of the mystery, or for having so little compassion for her mom, who was struggling to deal with her father's death. Also, it is obviously dated in several places, so keep in mind it was probably written in the 90s. Despite that, it was still a good and quick read with cozy holiday vibes.
Trigger Warning (spoiler alert): There is a brief scene where Lucy is sexually harassed, including unwanted touching, by an employer. Also, a slightly graphic description of some deviant sexual stuff she sees while learning to use the internet. And a short description of a gruesome animal death that never gets explained. I was pretty shocked to see that kind of content in a cozy mystery, so wanted to warn others. All are brief, but seem completely unnecessary to the story and represent a breaking of the genre's norms.

Historia
When Singer sewing machine tycoon Edward Clark built a luxury apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in the late 1800s, it was derisively dubbed “the Dakota” for being as far from the center of the downtown action as its namesake territory on the nation’s western frontier. Despite its remote location, the quirky German Renaissance-style castle, with its intricate façade, peculiar interior design, and gargoyle guardians peering down on Central Park, was an immediate hit, particularly among the city’s well-heeled intellectuals and artists.

Fascinating Details
Revisado: 01-21-25
Loved this definitive look at life at the Dakota over the past century. I only wish there had been some pictures. And an epilogue to bring this up to current times, since I finally realized this must've been written sometime in the 70s. Really engrossing reading, I didn't want to put it down and read it very quickly. It sounds like it would be a lovely place to live, especially back when the Clarks owned it.

Historia
In the 1970s, New York City was plagued by crime, filth, and an ineffective government. The city was falling apart, and even the newly constructed World Trade Center threatened to be a fiasco. But in April 1976, a quarter-mile up on the 107th floor of the North Tower, a new restaurant called Windows on the World opened its doors - a glittering sign that New York wasn't done just yet. In The Most Spectacular Restaurant in the World, journalist Tom Roston tells the complete history of this incredible restaurant, from its stunning $14-million opening to 9/11 and its tragic end.

Thorough and Detailed History
Revisado: 01-20-25
I enjoyed learning about the restaurant and how it came about and evolved over the years. I wish there had been more time spent on 9/11, which got such little page time compared to other, less important events in the restaurant's life. At times this felt like a history of the NY dining scene or even a biography of Joe Baum since it told about many other restaurants and how they came about and the dining scene evolved. It also included all of the restaurants in the World Trade Center. Still, mostly an absorbing read and a nice piece of history. For those who would be bothered by it, there was a LOT of bad language and F-bombs. That was an unpleasant surprise. Other than that, a really interesting book.

Historia
For the author, 9/11 changed everything. In the first place, just months before he had been given an “Project Censored” award for his article entitled “Genetic Bullets,” in the Washington Free Press in 2000. While he had arguably predicted Covid 24 years before pandemic during an interview on the Paranet Continuum, when he talked about “rumors about a superflu coming out of China,” 9/11 had blindsided him. He felt like a fraud as an investigative reporter and vowed to make amends by thoroughly investigating 9/11, how it happened, why it happened, the people and forces behind it ...

A pretty good play, but with a couple flaws
Revisado: 01-15-25
There were two things about this that bothered me. First, something seemed off with the formatting, as we got a lot of introductory information, then got it all again. I nearly gave up on this then, as the front matter wasn't that interesting the first time around. It also bothered me a little that the author seemed to fictionalized a little to tell what various people on the plane were thinking, etc, when no one can really know for sure. However, I was able to let that go. The biggest thing that bothered me was the almost complete exclusion of Todd Beamer from this story, when we all know how instrumental he was. I understand from the author's notes that he thought it unfortunate that all everyone knew of the day's heroic actions was Todd's catchphrase and so I figured he would probably try to downplay Todd's role to allow others' involvement to be highlighted. But to completely omit him from the story other than one throwaway line about him being on the phone seems dishonest and harms the historic accuracy of the piece he's trying to create. A balanced approach that shows ALL of those involved would be the most accurate and unbiased way to handle it. That said, I love what the author is trying to do here and his vision for inspiring others with the story of Flight 93, which is remarkable. Once I got past the front matter and began the actual story, it was very good and held my attention. The other thing I will note is that the virtual voice narration could've been better. There were common words and phrases (such as 9/11) that were frequently mispronounced and that detracted from my enjoyment of the play. I've heard virtual narration on other titles that didn't bother me at all, but the mispronounced of key words here was really annoying. The title is still worth a read despite all this, especially if you don't already know the story.

In this original and meticulously researched narrative history, the author of the “stunning” (The Sunday Times) Young and Damned and Fair uses the sinking of the Titanic as a prism through which to examine the end of the Edwardian era and the seismic shift modernity brought to the Anglo-American world.

Mostly good
Revisado: 01-15-25
This was a mostly good book, when it stuck to the topic. Very interesting fleshing out of the various personalities and the time period. But there was a lot of needless speculation--often unfounded--about the sexual preferences of various passengers. A lot. I recall a whole chapter about it for one of the people. It felt unnecessary and intrusive, not to mention disrespectful. These were real people who lost their lives through no fault of their own. To engage in lurid speculation on private matters they didn't choose to discuss publically seems wrong. I prefer to stick with the known facts so we can learn all we can from this tragedy and memorialize those who sadly lost their lives. Other than that, it was a pretty good book. I've read a lot on the Titanic and this still held my interest.

September 11th, 2001 - It was a morning just like any other, but it would soon turn into a national tragedy; leaving many to ponder the question: “Where Was God?” Some have asked it in earnest, while others have asked it derisively, but regardless of the intent it is a question that I truly believe deserves to be answered. As an NYPD first responder, it was certainly one that I personally wrestled with in the aftermath of that horrific day. I mean, if God really loves us, than how could he have allowed something so horrific to have happened? I decided to use my experience, as a former ...

An Insightful and Inspiring Work
Revisado: 01-15-25
I loved this book! In addition to being a good memoir from a first-responder who was there and impacted by 9/11, the author went a step further and used his detective skills to investigate the claims of Christianity, treating it as a cold case investigation into Jesus's murder. That approach was a great idea and one I'd never considered, but it provided some solid answers to questions the author (and many others) struggle with. It was almost like 2 books in 1! I highly recommend it and will be taking a look at any other books this author may have written. A powerful and very impactful read--get it, you won't be sorry!

First came the boom - the loud, deep, unapologetic bellow that seemed to erupt from the very core of the Earth. Eerily, the majestic high-rise slowly leaned to the south. On the 78th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one had information about what had happened at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001. Blind since birth, Michael couldn't see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle.
