The story was great, the narration not so much. MiGs are pronounced MEEGEES. The 57mm AAA gun is prounounced 57 100ths Millimeter. C-130 is the C onehundredthirty , USAF is yousaf. These are some of the adventures in robot reading.

The story was good, and the Thai who could see the future was weird.

The author knows his stuff regarding USAF culture, space craft, the physics, everything. This series of three books took me back to my childhood in the 60's and already an aerospace nut. If the Blue Gemini, DynaSoar and MOL had been allowed to progress who knows what new tech may have become a reality. Alas, short-sighted politicians and massed idiots allowed it all, including Apollo to wither and die.

There's a saying that goes something like 'don''t meet your heroes'. To me NASA was like a nerd utopia where everyone was heroic, honest, driven,,, blah blah blah. NASA might as well be an airline or an insurance company. Bureaucrats and political appointees who first do not love rockets and space travel make the decisions and it just goes to hell. I loved this book and the scales have dropped from my eyes. I was twenty-five when Challenger blew up, and what I didn't know what I needed to know was in this story.

Those who complain about the real and ongoing cancer of racism and gender bias do not understand context. Their loss.

Forrester got some of it right, Doe cleans up what Forrester got wrong making Tuck more of a human and less a super hero. Tuck is still one of my heroes from WWII, however, and now I know the story of how he became a mushroom farmer. I enjoyed the story and the narration, too.

Many aviation buffs know the names Carl, Mangrum and Smith in regards to the Cactus Air Force. However, what their fates were post Guadalcanal was till this book hidden in shadow. Bruning does these men a great service by telling their entire biographies, the good and the bad. The hidden demon of PTSD is a common denominator that ties these men together and exposes the faults of letting REMF's and naive politicians determine post combat outcomes.

I'm the same age as the author and my earliest memories are of the enthusiasm regarding NASA and space exploration, I also remember how it slowly died, culminating with a depressing visit to Cape Canaveral just before the Apollo/Soyuz mission. It was obvious something incredible had happened there, and was now no more and never to be repeated.

I learned a good bit about the Apollo crews and how the experience of going to the moon altered all of them, in particular the men who made the landings. How could such an experience not effect them? The lunar landings were an incredible feat of learning, engineering and talent and this book tells the tale nicely.

I had read about Brown and Hudner back in the '70's when I was in high school and cried a bit when I reached the end. I thought this story should have been a movie back then, with Rock Hudson as Hudner and Sidney Poitier as Brown. This story of Brown and Hudner reveals a truth that skin color is just that- it does not define what anyone can or cannot do except through societal idiocy and bias. Jesse Brown had two enemies, the communists in the Korean War and the United States. He partially overcame one and was killed by the other. It could have just as easily gone the other way.

What the participants of WWII went through and in particular captives of the Japanese is mind blowing. Cruel beyond belief. The men of the Tang did their jobs and a lot more and through horribly bad luck paid a steep price.

The story is a tragic tale of life in conflict, and reflects how some can cope and others cannot. Particularly tragic is having gone through combat, seeing shipmates die, surviving Japanese prisons and then to find out their wives had remarried. The government withheld information acknowledging some of the crew were still alive but did not tell the wives of those men.

This story also reflects the bad job our society does in helping those with PTSD, battle fatigue, or surviving violence in general.

I had read some other bios of Murphy including To Hell and Back. This book gives a bit more insight into Murphy's postwar life and highlights how we, the citizens of the United States and in particular the government has unrealistic expectations and understanding of veterans or war and violence in general.

Deeper, we expect every organ in the body to be susceptible to pathology with the exception of the brain. This has to change.

This was a pretty good bit of imaginative storytelling, the AI voice as tolerable, but there could have been more of the femdom element. Not bad, though.
