Historia
In the quiet, sunrise-side town of Hampstead, Michigan, Rachel Roberts descends the stairs in her beach house, ready to sit on the back deck, have a glass of wine, and feel the Huron breezes come in from the water as the stars start to glow in the night sky above. But everything changes when she sees headlights coming down her driveway. As the vehicle approaches, she becomes both excited and puzzled. Excited, because the vehicle belongs to her friend, retired Hampstead P.I. Obadiah Ben-David. Puzzled, because she has no idea why he is paying her an evening visit.

continues strong
Revisado: 04-05-25
This book continues strong. The sequel is as good as the first. Well worth the investment. It continues the underlying story of personal growth of the protagonist, and it has its own different mystery for the protagonist to solve. Good read.

Terrific characters
Revisado: 04-05-25
The well rounded characters are realistic, with exciting brilliance, but a surprising depth of personal pain and loss. The plot weaves a fast paced mystery, with flashbacks that pull an old mystery into the present. It's well written, and this reader can't wait to continue the series. Can't wait to see what happens next ...

You have magic. One sentence, three words, four syllables. Enough to change my life forever. And I'm not talking about the whole spells and sorcery thing. Lexie Carrigan thought the weirdest thing about her was she preferred watching documentaries and reading the newspaper to reality TV and Twitter. But on the eve of her 15th birthday, her aunt and sisters drop a bomb - she's magical. Now the girl who never made waves is blowing up her nightstand and trying to keep from wreaking havoc on her school.

Historia
Seventeen-year-old Kiki Siregar is a fabulous gamer girl with confidence to boot. She can’t help but be totally herself… except when she’s online. Her secret? She plays anonymously as a guy to avoid harassment from other male players. Even her online best friend—a cinnamon roll of a teen boy who plays under the username Sourdawg—doesn’t know her true identity. Which is fine, because Kiki doesn’t know his real name either, and it’s not like they’re ever going to cross paths IRL.

surprise interesting across age range
Revisado: 01-24-25
I didn't expect to love this book, but read it because I love the author. But. The world she portrayed gave me needed insights into my grandkids' world, at the same time as presenting a fun romance that was surprisingly interesting even though the characters are four decades younger than me. Still. I loved their strengths, their optimism, and their willingness to put themselves against moneyed giants. I rooted for them, I empathized with them, and I enjoyed them. What a fun read

Historia
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

Best Characters
Revisado: 01-22-25
Like all of Sutanto's books, there is humor, mystery, and Asian culture mixed up in a fun, fast, engaging read. I particularly liked this one, as it also included some sorrow, some human foibles, and some believable growth making for a rich, well constructed book. I am so looking forward to the next books in the series. This author has really grown in her craft, and her characters in this series are genuine and endearing. Excellent. Also, really enjoyed having so much insight from a grandmother personna. A refreshing change from the ubiquitous twenties angst. The best presentation of this age I've enjoyed since fried green tomatoes. Very very good .

Cooper, Nebraska, is forgettable and forgotten, a town you’d only stumble into if you’d taken a seriously wrong turn. Like Detective Thomas Levine’s career has. But when a young woman is found lying in the snow, choked to death, her eyes gouged out, the disgraced detective is Cooper’s only hope for restoring peace and justice.

striking
Revisado: 11-24-24
This is a compelling, but deeply depressing book
The characters are vibrant and well rounded; the plot is tight and believable. The writing engages your interest completely; flawlessly. As a reader, you are driven to finish, to hear all the answers. But. There is no feel good resolution. It's very, very real.

Believable characcters
Revisado: 10-26-24
This terrific book features a believable vet with realistic difficulties, struggles, triumphs. This is a refreshing look at a women's struggle with creating a post-war persona, not cloyingly sweet, not a Cinderella yarn where romance is the answer. The heroine must come to grips with her own realities, shortcomings, and potential. And happily, a smart new dog becomes a bosom buddy. The dog, an abused, abandoned, scarred stray and the scarred, one-eyed vet rescue each other, or rescue themselves together. Heartwarming, real. A good read.

Better than TV show
Revisado: 09-14-24
Give yourself a gift. Listen to the book. Especially if you loved the TV show--give yourself the gift of the book. It's narrated smoothly and comfortably by Nettles. The village descriptions round out the TV shows's images darkly, presenting a somber feel more quickly than viewed. The character development is rich, intense, and fast. You learn as much about your characters in one book as you do in the complete TV show series. They are better rounded, more believable, more human. The book is a gift. Surely it's your birthday.
