Historia
Per author John Stix: These are my interviews with Ed, exploring Van Halen through Balance. Plus additional conversations with Dave, Sammy, Alex and Michael. Eddie was warm and kind and nice, and he made you feel special when you were around him. At our first meeting, during Van Halen's debut tour with Montrose and Journey, he said to me, "I'm not a rock star." And as long as I've known him, he never acted like one. I always felt that if my mom (or his mom) walked in the room with us, he would stand up. How normal was he? Once when the band was headlining at Nassau Coliseum, we took a break...

I like the nitty-gritty detail
Revisado: 01-14-25
I enjoyed the minutiae of Eddie’s reflections. There are also a few interviews with the other guys, which is also good. I guess the worst thing about this book is the AI narrator. But I knew that it was AI going in, so sometimes I actually got a kick out of it. If you go with the flow, I don’t think it’ll bother you too much. I think the worst thing was sometimes I had a hard time knowing who was talking since all the voices sound the same. It was an interesting book and it was something that was easy to stop and start again – – listen to in small doses.

Historia
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Interesting. Robbins makes it.
Revisado: 11-22-24
Tim Robbins did an amazing job. A well-crafted story. I was struck by certain similarities between the characters, the world, and the technology, and what I experience in today’s world. It reminds you that human nature remains the same regardless of the time, place, or circumstances.

Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

The content goes up to 11, but turn the speed down to .8
Revisado: 11-05-24
I loved this book. I loved the honesty and the little details. Very well put together. Alex is a smart and deep man. While I love Alex‘s voice, literally and figuratively, he was a little hard to understand at times (He sounds like the actor, Alex Rocco, by the way), so I would recommend turning the speed down to .8.

Love the word tricks
Revisado: 10-26-24
Overall, this audio was excellent. Very good pacing and a lot of great little tricks for remembering things. There was only one chapter that really threw me off – – when they were talking about these, this and those…It got very confusing learning about eight different terms at one time. I mainly listened in the car. For this chapter, it probably would’ve been better to have been able to write the terms down. Overall, it was a fun audio that seemed to really have a good handle on catering to its audience.

Historia
A chain of events that will change the lives of each and every character will leave some of them wiser, some of them deader, and some of them definitely looking for a new line of work. With a wicked wit, razor-sharp observations, rich characters, and a plot with more twists than the Inland Waterway, Dave Barry makes his debut a complete and utter triumph.

A marriage of crime and comedy

Entertaining. Wacky characters. At times, the farcical aspects went a bit too far and the writing and narration hit you over the head a little too much. Not bad, but I preferred the movie.

Mel Brooks' own words telling all about the players, the filming, and studio antics during the production of this great comedy classic. The audiobook is alive and teeming with hundreds of photos, original interviews, and hilarious commentary. Young Frankenstein was made with deep respect for the craft and history of cinema-and for the power of a good schwanzstucker joke. This audiobook will also rely on interviews with gifted director of photography Gerald Hirschfeld, Academy Award-winning actress Cloris Leachman, and veteran producer Michael Gruskoff.

Superstar comedian and Hollywood box-office star Kevin Hart turns his immense talent to the written word by writing some words. Some of those words include: the, a, for, above, and even even. Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller.

Best comedian bio since Steve Martin’s Standing Up
Revisado: 05-31-24
This was a fantastic and engaging book. It was funny and educational – – without being preachy in the least. It was a long book, but it didn’t feel like it. I enjoyed every moment. I especially liked how Kevin Hart went into great detail. I hate when books say things like, I arrived in Hollywood and a few weeks later I got an agent and was making commercials… This book does not gloss over things like that, which is exactly what I want in a biography—detail, Excellent book – – can’t say enough. I love this guy and his fantastic outlook on life.

Revisado: 01-26-24
It was good, but I found the movie (an incredible cast) to be superior to the book. The narrator is very good. You definitely have to have a certain suspension of disbelief for this story. SPOILER— it’s a little hard to believe that these two are going to fall for each other so hard considering their positions, the situation, and the brevity of their initial meeting. Also, I don’t find Foley’s personality all that interesting, and it gets less so as the story progresses. Nevertheless, it is a fun read.

At 24, Sebastian Maniscalco arrived in LA with a suitcase and saved up minimum wages. He knew no one and nothing about standup comedy, but he was determined to go for it anyway. At 44, he's on the Forbes' list of highest earning comedians, sells out arenas, and has starred in four hit comedy specials including Why Would You Do That? on Showtime. Stay Hungry tells the story of the 20 years in between.

Another reviewer wrote that it was a self-help book. I hadn’t thought about that, but there’s a lot of truth to it. It really is a how to book on how to succeed in life— however, you might define success – – through the lens of an entertaining guy who did what it took to make it a very tough business. A great middle class to riches story. The best book on one man’s journey to the upper echelons of the comedy world since Steve Martin’s, Born Standing Up.

Without sparing the embarrassing details, Balbirer chronicles the two decades she spent as a struggling actress in the trenches of show business. From the searing purist tutelage of David Mamet at NYU Drama School ("In show business, women who are lucky enough to find employment are asked to do only two things in every role they ever play: take your shirt off and cry") to her bizarre 1 AM Saturday Night Live audition for Lorne Michaels, Balbirer recounts her sometimes disappointing, sometimes painful, and always bizarre adventures.

There are plenty of books out there about famous, successful people in show business. I found this book, about a woman in the entertainment trenches, who was successful in her own way, but never reaching the top, extremely interesting. I definitely recommend this book as you will take a ride alongside Nancy as she experiences what it’s like to try to make it in a very tough business.
