"...hilarious, heartbreaking, and deeply relatable." - Becky Bain, Writer & EditorBrett Perkins tries to fit in but rarely succeeds. Living with his sister and single mother in 1970s Southern California, Brett continually finds himself in ridiculous situations of his own making. From nearly dyeing himself permanently green to getting himself shot in the head with an arrow, you'll either burst out laughing or turn red with second-hand embarrassment as this screwball navigates his elementary school years. Almost a Martian is a collection of stories for those who want to feel better about ...

Deserves Narration
Revisado: 11-21-24
I enjoyed this childhood memoir and identified with the joy, pain, mystery and regrets of growing up. He expressed so well the baffling emotions and actions that so often overtook him. I would have loved to give this book 5 stars in all ways, but the virtual voice narration didn't do this book justice.

A Gentle Story

I enjoyed this gentle account of country life. I almost didn't listen to it because it was narrated by Virtual Voice. But I was pleasantly surprised that it was well done. The voice was soothing and had a pleasant accent.

Historia
As a woman used to traveling and living the high life in Bangkok, Leanne Shirtliffe recognized the constant fodder for humor while pregnant with twins in Asia's sin city. But in spite of deep-fried bug cuisine and nurses who cover newborn bassinets with plastic wrap, Shirtliffe manages to keep her babies alive for a year with help from a Coca-Cola deliveryman, several waitresses, and a bra factory. Then she and her husband return home to the isolation of North American suburbia.

Historia
If you've ever been in the car while a loved one was learning to drive, then think of this as cheap therapy! Learning to drive has occasioned emotions ranging from reasonable caution to unbridled terror. Learning under the watchful eye of one's spouse is an added challenge. Undertaking the task with anxious children in the backseat can only heighten the sensory richness of the moment.

The Most They Ever Had

Historia
In 2001, a community of people in the Appalachian foothills had come to the edge of all they had ever been. Across the South, padlocks and chains bound the doors of silent mills, and it seemed a miracle to blue-collar people in Jacksonville, Alabama, that their mill still bit, shook, and roared. The mill had become almost a living thing, and they served it even as it filled their lungs with lint and shortened their lives. In return, it let them live in stiff-necked dignity in the hills of their fathers.

Another great book by Rick Bragg
Revisado: 05-16-22
Rick Bragg writes and recounts personal stories of the rise and fall of the cotton mills in a way that takes you there. The grit, tenacity, and grindingly hard work of my own father's and grandfather's generation of men and women is honored and preserved in this exceptional book.

Historia
When Haven Kimmel was born in 1965, Mooreland, Indiana, was a sleepy little hamlet of 300 people. Nicknamed "Zippy" for the way she would bolt around the house, this small girl was possessed of big eyes and even bigger ears. In this witty and lovingly told memoir, Kimmel takes readers back to a time when small-town America was caught in the amber of the innocent postwar period - people helped their neighbors, went to church on Sunday, and kept barnyard animals in their backyards.

From the beloved, best-selling author of All over but the Shoutin', a delectable, rollicking food memoir, cookbook, and loving tribute to a region, a vanishing history, a family, and, especially, his mother. In The Best Cook in the World, Rick Bragg finally preserves his heritage by telling the stories that framed his mother's cooking and education, from childhood into old age. Because good food always has a good story.

Revisado: 07-31-19
I really enjoyed this book. The author is also a wonderful narrator, he brought to life southern cooking and as his momma says, "our people". It made me think of stories I heard my grandmother tell, and I can't wait to try the biscuit recipe to see if it tastes like the ones she used to make.
