LatinoLand is an exceptional, all-encompassing overview of Hispanic America based on personal interviews, deep research, and Marie Arana’s life experience as a Latina. At present, Latinos comprise twenty percent of the US population, a number that is growing. By 2050, census reports project that one in every three Americans will claim Latino heritage.

If you’re searching for the truth, this may not be your resource. Had children
Revisado: 09-17-24
Many of my family members are Latino as well as many of my neighbors and friends. I was excited to find this book to learn the history of the Latino community. In one breath, the author tells us about immigrants who arrived in this country illegally, had children, and then were rounded up and sent home from their ancestral lands that they lived on for generations. I tried to listen to this book because I wanted to know the history, I’m not sure this is the best reference to learn about the history of the Latino community. I will search for another source that is not so biased. I understand that people of color were not treated well in this country, lands were stolen, and the people at the time were white men. I like to leave wonderful reviews for authors, and I had high hopes for this book, but it felt like the author bleeds hatred for white people. I don’t believe that’s how we fix things today.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

My eyes have been opened into the challenges of my grandchildren’s generation and why so many kids are struggling with mental health. This was very helpful.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

I read this book to understand my grandchild with ADHD. Listening to these tips and symptoms was like wiping the bathroom mirror after a steamy shower and seeing a clear view. I needed this because now I understand the messy room and chaotic life at times. I have a much better understanding of what her world is like. Thank you for sharing.

Listening Again
Revisado: 09-09-24
Excellent advice. My biggest take away is that others who judge us are doing so using their morals and values, not necessarily ours. My other take away is that my critical inner voice may not be someone I would want to hang out with if it was a real person, so why am I giving it so much attention? I need to listen to this book again to hear the advice for a second time.

Fun Story to Listen to on My Commute to Work
Revisado: 04-12-24
Set in the 1920s, I found this story interesting. Murder, oppression on many levels, coming of age of a young woman, who became a mother far too young and lived in a difficult, home, life, suspense, friendship, across forbidden lines at this time in our countries, history, and so much more. if you are looking for a story that will keep you coming back to hear more, this one’s for you!

Words to Live By
Revisado: 04-12-24
I think everyone should listen to this book. The insights and information that I learned about how others can be using knowledge they gain and data from me was eye-opening. One bit of information that will stick with me is that we look to our peers of our age to determine decision-making. For example, a three-year-old would not get in the pool for his dad or his instructor, but another three-year-old could get him in the pool that explains why my children didn’t want to listen to me and if I want to learn more in my life, I should look to all generations and not just my own before making decisions. I also found the book helpful for my workplace situation. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about how our mind work, how we are influenced by othersand how we can have a positive influence on those around us.

I absolutely loved the narrator of this book! She made the story come alive, and I think I enjoyed it more than I probably would have just reading the book. Can’t say that for sure, because I didn’t read the book, I listen to it. The story has twist and turns, historical aspects, suspense and romance, all wrapped up in one. Great job!

Historia
It's every novelist's greatest fear: pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into writing hundreds of pages only to realize that their story has no sense of urgency, no internal logic, and so is a page-one rewrite. The prevailing wisdom in the writing community is that there are just two ways around this problem: pantsing (winging it) and plotting (focusing on the external plot).

Excellent narrator
Revisado: 02-11-24
I told the parents of an aspiring young writer to purchase this book to ensure she develops the best story writing process possible. The process is detailed and likely best in book form. Listening to this as an audiobook, though the narrator was the best I’ve ever heard - no, I don’t know her, would probably be better as a book in hand to use as a reference. That said, I listened to this book as I drove back-and-forth to work and I’m not sure I would’ve had time to read it if i hadn’t had the option of an audiobook. I will be buying the paperback version for a reference.
