Historia
This Is Not a Game is the extraordinary untold story of the internet’s first conspiracy theory, the legend of Ong’s Hat. Marc Fennell will dive deep into a previously unexplored world of tech hippies, eccentric web subcultures and simmering paranoia, uncovering how this tongue-in-cheek artistic experiment backfired on its creator and went on to influence much of what’s wrong with the internet today.

WOW!
Revisado: 05-09-24
At first I thought this is kind of boring for me, maybe it's geared to a different personality and I almost shut it off. then the last half hour of the story hit, and the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. I realized this is not a boring story, but a pathway that leads you the incredible place we as a species find ourselves in. previously when I would see blatant anarchy, that has very little basis in reality (presently college student protests) I used to ask my wife how did this situation get this crazy, Now I know it's Ong's Hat all over again. Feel free to click on my name, I'm a seasoned reviewer, and it is difficult to get 5 stars across the board from me.

1st rate cast working with poor material
Revisado: 03-30-24
Actors and production were outstanding, but the subject, oh boy was it horrible. Like not poorly written horrible, it was booooring horrible, and it seems as though the author had recently been exposed to The Sixth Extinction and tried to use that narrative as a back drop. Sure you can do that, but the whole "My husband saw the wildflowers on the bluff and slammed on the brakes". is just silly along with almost every other anecdote. I'm not trying to be an ahole, just hoping for better quality material, The author should either go into directing or write a storyline that has intrigue and captivates, this was the opposite of that.

I was hoping to listen to the whole series
Revisado: 02-27-24
I like sci fi that's not a bunch of space battles, so when this poped up I thought I might enjoy the series. The intro was ok and somehow worked into a fish out of water situation. Alright, I'm suspending disbeleif and let's roll with it. Then the meat of the story started, and it was pretty good, BUT then the author just got too unbelievable with a character dodging the entire Air Force and "slipping" away off a military base, seriously. Ok were still rolling. Then the character spouted a bunch of fantasy-type quests for the main character to achieve, handed over the "Amulet" and committed suicide, Wait What, why didn't that character help the protagonist with the quests, why kill yourself. That was just silly.
So I'm somewhat ok with fantasy quests, but I don't seek them out, and I really thought I was getting into some cool sci-fi, but the author turned from The Matrix to Lord of the Rings. with the whole, "You must destroy the children of the elders and break the sacred wall of onyx" type crap. I ended up shutting it off about an hour before it ended

Revisado: 05-11-23
So I'm kinda a hard ass reviewer. I ding stars for sub-par productions. And I really like Jon Ronson, He has a demeanor that makes it feel like he is one of your lifelong friends. He does his research and due diligence to the very end of any thread. So If I give 5 stars across the board, I really mean it.
ps if you click on my name and think I'm not that hard of a reviewer, it's because Audible has deleted some of my reviews, and there's one that they just won't post, and yes, I have followed all the rules for posting

As had happened many times before, the most primal human instincts rose up, only this time armed with the advanced scientific knowledge to create a genetically engineered smart virus that quickly wiped out humanity to the last man. just one NO after another
Revisado: 05-11-23
If you're a stickler for intelligent character/story decisions you'll hate this book. This was just a NO then another NO and another etc., you get the idea. Spoiler alert, can't justify my review with normal vagueness. the characters ages don't line up with the story premise, sure the main guy was known to be about 100 years old so he could have been wandering for decades before the aliens found him, but the girl was ELEVEN, meaning all of humanity died in the last ten years! and all of humanity had no knowledge of any of the plethora of aliens out there, but ten years later here they are and tons of them, species, planets, civilizations digging thru our ruins, Ok lets gloss over that and just keep listening. They find the GIRL!, NOW they have TWO humans!! fucking yea! but they forget to ask the girl if any other humans are surviving around where they found her, luckily as they are about to step on the transport out of there she says, can Poxin come with us. WHAT, REALLY? So they go and get Poxin, Keep in mind the bad aliens have caused a fit trying to attain these last two humans, especially since the bad aliens have claim to the planet that they found the girl on. They even came over to the good aliens camp and tried to passive aggressively capture the girl. but then the bad aliens fall asleep when the party goes to retrieve Poxin, NO. gloss over that, They all return to the nice aliens home world and hang out for five years or so, then the girl is getting to breeding age, the aliens are like hey let's make some more humans, you know cause you're the only three left, the old man freaks out NOOOOO NOT UNTIL SHE'S READY!!! (me) ok but dude, you're cutting it close. So the aliens have a great idea and send the 3 remaining humans off to an old paradise human planet to nature some romantic like ongoings, unfortunately the young human male gets jealous of the old guy and tries to kill the old guy with a gun he lifted from the aliens at their home planet, cause the aliens just leave guns laying around and shrug when they end up missing then you can just take them on a spaceship in your overhead baggage. but the girl beats the kid to the punch by conking him over the head with a rock and killing him, cause every paradise mansion has big rocks laying around in them. so now were down to two remaining humans and the aliens are pissed about the whole deal, now they insist they have to procreate the human species, the old guy is extremely upset, ranting and whatnot. should't you want humans to survive? but twist, the aliens locate the home planet EARTH! FREAKING A right on. the aliens allow the only two remaining humans in the entire universe to go off exploring Earth alone NO NO NO. Imagine you have located the last three monkeys on Earth and have them safe. but while you studying them one of the monkeys kills one of the other two. Would you let them go ANYWHERE? NO! But in this book the Aliens have that covered, The monkeys are allowed to go alone on excursions on this long lost wild Planet but with one caveat, they have to carry sidearms, WHAT THE F, JUST NO, CLICKED THE BOOK OFF!!!

Why did they make this audiobook?
Revisado: 04-24-23
Strange story, which is okay by me sometimes, but this was almost nonsense and never really went anywhere. It's so bizarre/silly that when finished I couldn't understand who in the heck gave the green light to produce this thing.

The best book I've listened to since Red Rising
Revisado: 04-23-23
I don't just hand out 5 stars to any book, I think that practice erodes the competency of the review system. If you click on my name you will see I will Hammer a bad book.
This book is exceptional, the characters are well developed, the plot and story are great, and I couldn't wait to get back to the book when I wasn't listening.
I would recommend this book to anyone and be confident that they would feel their credit well spent (I actually already did that twice). So go ahead and get this book, you will love it.

Really good character driven story
Revisado: 03-05-23
My genre preferences are all over the board, But I do find more and more that I need good characters to really enjoy a book, and this story has that. So Just on character development alone I feel this book is well worth the credit. I also enjoy a noir detective story and this has that sort of feel, but goes a little off the rails in that department, not in a bad way though, just different, which I found refreshing. Ol' Carter does get in quite a few brawls, so if you're a Jack Reacher fan, you're covered.
Like I said this book is well worth the credit, click on my name, if this book was a piece of crap, I would tell you,
But why then, only three stars for the story, sorry to say, I need a twist at the end, I mean I saw one kinda (Trying not to spoil) but the "OH SHIT!" out loud twist to bump up to the 5 star level wasn't there, but I will absolutely be following this series, These characters held my interest much more than 90% of the books I listen to. And the performance was outstanding. Somehow Mikael managed to convey some over the top characters without overacting, what a pleasure to take in. Thanks Michael and Dan.

Outstanding Premise...
Revisado: 06-13-22
Story and performance 4 stars but 3 stars overall, what gives? 1st click on my name, I give honest reviews. 2nd I agree with all of the reviewers on this book through the whole spectrum save one.
The first half of this book seems like one long info dump, hours and hours of what seemed like an almost complete absence of dialog and action, which was exacerbated by one of the characters being a monk who had a vow of silence. I very nearly quit on it, I hated it. "SHOW DON'T TELL!" kept raging through my mind! BUT the narrator did such an outstanding job with the "text book" that his acting allowed my to plow through and keep listening, That was the review I disagreed with, the narrator single handedly saved the first half of this book, he was fantastic, (I just didn't 5 star love him) he was absolutely 4 star great.
Then as though a switch had been flipped, the second half became a real book with dialog and everything! So the story was great, outstanding premise, and at some points poor execution that I almost quit on which leads to a 4 star story and 3 star overall. Perhaps one of the most impressive things about this book is the quality of reviewers it received, click on them, every one has many reviews which means it's not just Tristans friends skewing the results, impressive, not sure I've ever seen that before. Finally my recommendation, Yes it is worth a listen. If you are looking for a great sci-fi sans all the space battles defiantly give this one a try.

Revisado: 04-10-22
Great character driven story. Really made me want to get back to the book and see what was happening when I wasn't listening. Story is put together well and gets you wrapt for the outcome. Performance is great, never detracting from the story, i just don't love (5 star) Rogers performance, but honestly i'd rather have a narrator that disappears and let's the story play out, than an over-actor.
