Creepy, eerie but also sad. Well worth the hype surrounding this short story. I'm glad I finally read this.

Can we call the yellow wallpaper an allegory of a misunderstood or ignored depression? I thought it fantastic. It is a well written representation of a woman cry when trapped in others selfish or blind relationship with a partner’s depression. Loved the voice and cadence of the reader.

This story was gut-wretching for me. Postpartum depression is real and needs to be treated. It is NOT the mother's fault nor something she can snap out of. Just as with any other illness like Diabetes, Cholesterol, Asthma, or any number of other possibilities medication is used for and a doctor is consulted- Postpartum also needs to be seen by a doctor & the mother needs intervention.

This story was well written to get me so unnerved. A mother driven to insanity from lack of care. Worse, her husband is guilty on not 1 but 2 counts! Not only refusing to get her help, isolating her, discounting her thoughts & feelings, and belittling her BUT ALSO he was a physician as well and FAILED to uphold his Hippocratic Oath! Others were involved as well. Definitely a book worth reading.

Please have no illusions that this is only a story or that it was something that happened in the past and no longer happens. I promise you as a witness first hand that doctor's, spouses, and family continue to do this to the mother to this very day. 😞

Short story with a powerful punch!

This piece requires a bit of background knowledge I think, and perhaps that's why there are some negative reviews. At points in history it was very common for men to imprison their wives for virtually any reason under the guise of "hysteria." (Look into the origins of the word hysteria and you'll understand even more the point.) This short story masterfully displays a woman experiencing initially typical post partum worries. The husband has imprisoned her and at the time of setting it is made clear this is commonplace. She disagrees but goes along with it, believing in her husbands love. Then we see the consequences of these very real choices. It's sobering to think how many women have suffered a similar fate throughout history.

Wonderful performance - essential read for deeper understanding of the historical treatment of mental health and suppression of women.

Haunting

Very nicely produced, The audio is clear and I was impressed by how the intro music set the tone. Cynthia Erivo gives a wonderful performance. This tale holds a special place in my heart as it is one of the first stories I've read with an unrelible narrator who suffers from mental illness--it leaves for a lot to unpack and merits a second pass if it's your first time hearing the story.

One of the Greats

I've heard of this tale but had yet to listen to it until now. it's short enough that I'd like to listen again!
