Historia
New York Times best-selling author Kristen Green draws on years of research to tell the extraordinary and little-known story of young Mary Lumpkin, an enslaved woman who blazed a path of liberation for thousands. She was forced to have the children of a brutal slave trader and live on the premises of his slave jail, known as the “Devil’s Half Acre”. When she inherited the jail after the death of her slaveholder, she transformed it into “God’s Half Acre”, a school where Black men could fulfill their dreams.

Factual and moving
Revisado: 12-22-24
When I drive through and around Richmond, I will see the city as if a veil was lifted. The facts around Richmond’s role in slavery are horrific and compelling all at once. And for me, hearing the familiar names of locations and the surnames of folks I know and heard as I was growing up was profoundly moving.

Historia
In centering Black women’s stories, two award-winning historians seek both to empower African American women and to show their allies that Black women’s unique ability to make their own communities while combatting centuries of oppression is an essential component in our continued resistance to systemic racism and sexism. Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross offer an examination and celebration of Black womanhood, beginning with the first African women who arrived in what became the United States to African American women of today.

My heart is full!
Revisado: 07-15-21
So many compelling lives that have led to where we as Black women stand today. I see the world differently because of this book. I walk a little taller and see my sisters as hero’s even when they can’t see it themselves. Thank you Daina and Kali for telling our story in such a powerful and poignant way. A must read for all!
