Stilted Performance of a Book without Direction
Revisado: 03-29-21
The dialogue is very stilted and overly detailed. The narrator is horrible with accents and lacks any sense of the story. I gave up a third of the way in when I had no idea where the story was going and why I had to listen to all the wandering of the author.

Wimpering narration ruined it!
Revisado: 02-25-20
I gave up on this after a few hours. The narrator has a non-stop whispery, wimpering voice that was just too much to listen to. The story was ok though it dragged a little bit, or maybe the narration just made it seem that way.

Historia
When Captain Kyle Mercer of the Army’s elite Delta Force disappeared from his post in Afghanistan, a video released by his Taliban captors made international headlines. But circumstances were murky: Did Mercer desert before he was captured? Then a second video sent to Mercer’s Army commanders leaves no doubt: The trained assassin and keeper of classified Army intelligence has disappeared.

Really Annoying Lead Character In a Too Long Story
Revisado: 12-06-19
The lead character, Scott Brody, is arrogant, annoying, and an unbelievable wise-ass. He made the story into a joke with his unfiltered comments in totally inappropriate situations. Even Scott Brick, one of my absolute favorite narrators, had trouble and seemed annoying as the voice of Brody. If this is the start of a series, for me it is also the end. It was way too long, too preachy, and, had it not been for Miami traffic, I would have given up at several points.

Young Adult Novel with Obnoxious Lead Character
Revisado: 10-23-19
I could not get beyond 30 minutes of this book. It reads like a young adult novel with an obnoxious heroine. The terminology is a sad attempt to use the proper jargon - it does not succeed. I sent it back.

Historia
After an overhaul of leadership at the FBI's New York field office, A. X. L. Pendergast is abruptly forced to accept an unthinkable condition of continued employment: the famously rogue agent must now work with a partner. Pendergast and his new teammate, junior agent Coldmoon, are assigned to Miami Beach, where a rash of killings by a bloodthirsty psychopath are distinguished by a confounding M.O.: cutting out the hearts of his victims and leaving them - along with cryptic handwritten letters - at local gravestones, unconnected save in one bizarre way.

Pendergast Gets a Partner
Revisado: 02-27-19
Pendergast has been assigned a partner to keep him in line. Good luck with that! Actually, it provides some good fun to follow through the heat of Miami. Pendergast's take on Miami is spot on - the heat, the traffic, the inhabitants, etc. I found this to be a fun adventure, a just-complicated-enough mystery, and the usual marvelous narration. I recommend this to all Pendergast fans

I gave up
Revisado: 02-27-19
This story started out with a good premise, but it meandered back and forth in the present and the past and never seemed to get anywhere. Lots of chatter, little point. I gave up halfway through. Oh, the narrator was pretty good, not the story.

Brassy Narration Did Not Sit Well
Revisado: 06-12-18
The story was ok, nothing exciting, but the narration was a problem. Frequently, the narrator would begin sentences with a loud, brassy, nasal few words that were just out of place, ruining the flow of the story. This happened regularly throughout the story. This is a shame, because other than these frequent phrases, the narration was not bad.
Maybe a story better read than heard.

Two Cuba's - Yesterday & Today
Revisado: 02-24-18
My wife is from Cuba and I live near Miami, so I know its history well. The then-and-now story is well developed but narrated with minimal emotion, hardly how a Cuban would tell it. Nonetheless, the history is accurate and the state of the island today is spot on. Though two narrators are used, it is hard to distinguish one from the other. My biggest complaint is that Cuban names of people and places are spoken with a Spanish pronunciation, although the narration is in perfect English. So Cuba becomes Koobah and location names are hard to understand. For me, it was a distraction, and it is not how I hear Cubans in Miami speak English. Other than that, the story will draw you in, teach you about a magic place and the people who love it, and paint a stark picture of how Cuba exchanged one despot for an even worse one.

Excellent Sequel!
Revisado: 02-15-18
To appreciate this book, you need to have listened to the first book in the series, Stillhouse Lake. This is an exciting, fast-paced sequel that will keep your interest every step of the way. You will fear for the characters, love the characters, and then hate them, only to love them again. A great use of a credit!

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Gave up 2/3 of the way through
Revisado: 11-27-17
This started out fine, but 2/3 of the way through, I gave up. The narration was fine at the start but became annoying from the smart-ass comments and the general annoying character telling the tale. As for the story, it turned into one long caper book and I felt like the science was just thrown in because it worked in the Martian - it does not here. It was there just to be there.
