Historia
When the Massachusetts Institute of Technology admitted in 1999 that they had discriminated against women on its faculty, it sent shockwaves throughout institutions of higher learning across the country. In this TPWKY book club episode, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kate Zernike joins us to discuss her book The Exceptions: Nancy Hopkins, MIT, and the Fight for Women in Science, which details the sequence of events that led sixteen scientists to demand the equality that had been denied to them for so long. Zernike, who was one of the reporters to break the story in 1999, centers this ...

Objectivity
Revisado: 02-08-25
I have no idea if this review is going on the episode I'm listening to or the podcast as a whole, but this comment is for the one about women in science bringing discrimination to light in 1999. The author said something to the effect of 'if any field would be merit based, it would be science'--and I think this is the whole problem. Although we should aspire to it, no one can be totally objective. Scientists think they're objective, so they're far less likely to recognize bias in themselves or others. We need to stop holding science up as a bastion of objectivity and truth--because, as this podcast shows all the time, it's not. Everything is a humanity. Science needs to recognize its bias before it can move forward--a historian.

Historia
When you think about Christmas, you likely picture mangers, glowing fireplaces, sweet carolers, and snow-blanketed hills. But behind all this bright magic, there’s something much darker lurking in the shadows. In The Dead of Winter, Cambridge-trained historian Sarah Clegg delves deep into the folklore of the Christmas season in Europe, detailing the way its terrifying and often debaucherous past continues to haunt and entertain us now in the twenty-first century.

A popular history of folklore
Revisado: 11-17-24
It's not boring, but it's also not kids' stories. If you're looking for fiction, this isn't it. It's a popular history of Christmas folklore, going back to pre-Christian practices. It uses plenty of examples of surviving practices, too. It's very good.

Very good mystery in the tradition of classics
Revisado: 10-10-23
Good mystery that follows traditions of classic mysteries. Can't wait to read another. I'm expecting more experience with the characters to take the series from good to great.

Serious continuity errors
Revisado: 04-26-23
The performance is good as usual. The writer, though, forgot several plot points from previous books and totally changed one character's back story and personality.

OK but wouldn't recommend
Revisado: 01-17-23
There is potential in this book. Some of the characters and places are interesting as a setting for cozy mysteries. However, several characters are awful stereotypes, including the murderer, and some of the plot feels forced. The love interesr has zero character development. The performance is fine except that the narrator sounds like a computer voice pretty often; her reading style is very flat.

Historia
The Earl of Burford can't believe his luck. Rex Ransom, his favourite star from the 'talkies', and his hot-shot producer, Haggermeir, want to film their next feature at Alderley, the family's seventeenth-century country estate. Somewhat less enthusiastic is the Countess, who finds herself hosting an impromptu house party for the incoming Hollywood crowd.

Better than the first

Liked this better than the 1st in the series. Performance was good except for the Italian woman verging on a cheesy Dracula accent.

Historia
Mesopotamia is the ancient name for the region that is now Iraq, a remarkably advanced civilization that flourished for two-thirds of the time that civilization has existed on Earth. Mesopotamians mastered irrigation agriculture; built the first complex urban societies; developed writing, literature, and law; and united vast regions through warfare and diplomacy. While civilizations like Greece and Rome have an unbroken tradition of written histories, the rich history of Mesopotamia has only been recently rediscovered, thanks to the decipherment of Mesopotamia's cuneiform writing less than 200 years ago.

Excellent story and narration
Revisado: 08-09-22
I'm really enjoying this series. Best book yet. Both the narration and story are excellent. I'm not a huge Percy fan, but this book didn't focus on her excessively. I like the English setting best--Lennox feels more at home and more natural there. Can't wait for the next book.

Historia
Erin Coleridge's used bookstore in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, England, is a meeting place for the villagers and, in particular, for the local Jane Austen Society. At the Society's monthly meeting, matters come to a head between the old guard and its young turks. After the meeting breaks for tea, persuasion gives way to murder with extreme prejudice when president Sylvia Pemberthy falls dead to the floor. Poisoned? Presumably, but by whom? And was Sylvia the only target?

Solid first in series
Revisado: 01-18-22
This was a good mystery with interesting characters. The Austen thing was a little forced, but not too bad. The bugger problem is that the romance feels forced. Everyone in the village is on the prowl constantly for some reason. However, it's a good enough book that I'll give the next one a shot.

Not a Poppy fan
Revisado: 01-01-22
This was a fairly enjoyable light read. The performance was excellent. I didn't like Poppy, though. She's unwilling to stand up for herself unless the situation is desperate. She also makes weird choices, like buying a sandwich for lunch when she can't afford a coffee on the way to work. Why not pack a lunch if she's that desperate? Not sure I'll be reading the next book just because of the main character.
