Shocking how easy it was for a charlatan and con man tapped into hatred for “other” that lies just below the soft exterior of midwestern “nice”.
Sadly, we are reliving this same American Experience 100 years later.

Fantastic book. Mike makes reading history fun and following the thread thru time so easy to follow. The parallels between this period in Roman history to our current time in history are unmistakable as well. “…with the treaty complete, Sulla allowed the king to return to Pontus where Mithridates rebuilt his power and planned his next move, ‘just as fire not wholly extinguished bursts forth again into greater flames’.” 😳

If there is such a thing as a Historical hobbyist, I am one. This book is a fantastic sweep of the Medieval period and made the period come alive. I will certainly read more of Dan’s books.

Loved this! Dr Paxton does a fantastic job covering the arc of a 1000 yrs of history. My interest was sparked watching The Last Kingdom and I began to wonder about just were did these Anglo Saxons come from? Just fantastic.
