Thought provoking story-spoiled by virtual voice
Revisado: 11-20-24
I enjoyed the story and ideas on magic and time travel. I would have loved a live narrator to really bring it to life! Not surprisingly, virtual voice narrator lacked inflections, change of tone, and emotion. Too bad, with the right narrator I would have given it 5 all around!

Not a fan of the new narrator
Revisado: 06-12-20
I’ve listened to every book in the series, I’m a big fan of the storyline! I’m so disappointed in this new narrator. Her voice is so monotone, lacks inflection, she struggles with accents, and it’s hard to differentiate between characters, of which there are many! It makes it hard to follow the story, or even get into it! I understand the original narrator might not be available for some reason, but couldn’t you find someone who had more of a grasp on dialects, and could express the various emotions that the characters were going though? The 3 for overall was definitely brought down by the narrators performance.

Disappointed in narration
Revisado: 05-16-19
I have listened to all the books in the Broach series and have loved them all. Though I enjoyed The Pearl Broach, as far as the story was concerned. I’m sure the author had a good reason for changing narrators on the 9th book. There are many characters, nationalities, dialects and age groups that are represented in these books; it’s a complex read. I found the English narration, though clear, lacked a conversational cadence, the Scottish accents, which were at the heart of the books, were downright horrible. One character who grew up in New York, but lived in Virginia was spoken with a (not so good) southern drawl. It was hard to keep track of who was speaking, unless their name was mentioned, which I didn’t find to be the case in previous books.
Regarding the story itself, I liked how the legend was developed more, and appreciated the American history elements immensely. I also loved getting caught up with the various family members and their kids. I look forward to future books, but hope the author either goes back to the original narrator, or finds someone better able to handle the complexity’s of the characters in her books.

Historia
Browsing an antiques shop in Wiltshire, Alison Bannister stumbles across a delicate old portrait - identified as the doomed Tudor queen Anne Boleyn. Except Alison knows better. The subject is Mary Seymour, the daughter of Katherine Parr, who was taken to Wolf Hall in 1557 and presumed dead after going missing as a child. And Alison knows this because she, too, lived at Wolf Hall and knew Mary...more than 400 years ago.

Original time travel
Revisado: 12-27-18
I have to say, this starts of rather slow, and it took me a bit to pull me in. That's because it's not what you expect - which turns out to be great! It's has some magic, mystery, a bit of romance, history, debauchery, and is definitely an original twist! I like that the story doesn't leave any loose ends, every little piece, that may have seemed insignificant when first mentioned, was explained and made the story a whole. I like that there were two different narrators, to really distinguish the two main characters.

So much history, adventure, and backstory on the brooches! Also, I loved that not only there was the introduction of new characters but more backstory on existing characters.

Too much detail, too drawn out
Revisado: 05-24-18
The story is intriguing, it just takes too bloody long to get there! Sooo much detail of the type of weapons, how they made them, the clothing, not processes, just Minutia, or more like a archeological textbook, not a novel. I'm totally down for some detail, and I enjoy the history, but I literally skipped through a couple of chapters and don't feel like I missed anything of great importance. I think if she took out about 5 chapters, the story would still have plenty of history, and not get boring or redundant.

Historia
The Game of Kings: First in The Lymond Saga. It's August 1547, and unrest in Europe is rife. Scotland, nominally ruled by 4 year old Queen Mary, is heaving with intrigue - and hot gossip. The notorious rebel, Crawford of Lymond, is rumoured to be back in Edinburgh. The city is sealed, but such things never worry 'Lymond'. As usual, he leaves a characteristic trail of hue and cry, vanished contraband, and a drunken sow.

Horrible narrator
Revisado: 03-25-16
Truth is I couldn't make myself listen to it past the first hour! The narrator sounded so pompous and mush mouthed I could barely understand. Disappointing considering other reviews which touted the story!

A legacy from her father includes a faded letter and a well-worn journal. The journal reveals she was abandoned as a baby 160 years ago. Mildly intriguing
Revisado: 03-08-16
The book has in interesting premise, modern day girl discovers she's from the past, goes back to try to unravel the mystery. The problem is the book lacks the depth and detail that I've become accustomed to with both the Outlander series or the Sara Donati, Lake in the Cloud series. I was also very disappointed with the narrator. Again, after listening to both of the previous series mentioned, and hearing how the narrators were able to transcend from Scott's to English to African, from male to female, this narrator came far short! I wonder if I would have liked the book more with another reader? It reminded me of he shallow harlequin romances I read when I was a kid.
