Some good nuggets along with some disappointments

This is my first exposure to Dr McMillan. I enjoyed her coverage of optimal nutrition and picked up several good nuggets of information. I was convinced that she relied upon scientific studies to back up every claim.

Three shortcomings of her work are: (1) lack of any discussion about the harmful affect of herbicides like glyphosate and it’s impact on the microbiomes of Americans (the EU was smart enough to not allow it’s use — not sure about the Aussies), (2) lack of any discussion about the impact of microbial illness on the microbiome, and (3) her repeated disparaging of things like the paleo lifestyle and theories like leaky gut.

I could hear her verbal ‘eye rolling’ of certain popular topics — particularly given that she almost immediately follows her snide comment by saying something like ‘but it is true that…’. Two examples are the ‘paleo diet’ and ‘leaky gut’.

Rather than be snide, I wished she would have a longer view of the evolution of nutritional science. The important thing is that observations finally led to alternate theories that disproved the terrible theories that overtook the nutritional ‘science’ community from 1960 to 2010. The pioneers of the rebellion also initially lacked ‘scientific studies’. Scientific studies are great, but they are expensive and have only been conducted over the last few decades. Debunking what was passed as ‘science-based’ nutritional information to the US and more other nations for 50 years required brave people to buck the norms and risk professionalism reputation by proposing theories that were not accepted initially (e.g., microbiome and leaky gut).

In closing, Dr McMillan is worth listening to. You will gain a good foundation on what has been proven along with items that she felt were likely to be proven accurate with further studies.

The author provides an insightful understanding perspective on the United States Constitution along with evolving Supreme Court interpretations of it. I will never view either in the same light again. I highly recommend this book to everyone. As a retired United States Marine, I thought I was fairly well educated on our nation’s founding documents that we swore to uphold. This book proved to me that I continue to have more to learn. This book provides great ideas on how we can continue to evolve this “experiment in representative democracy” into a more perfect union.

A true gift of clinical and research insights on the complexity that is Lyme and associated co-infections! Dr Kinderlehrer provides his accumulated knowledge on this fast evolving chronic illness — for the benefit of both patients and health providers. I also love that Dr Burrascano wrote the forward. These two amazing doctors are courageous and compassionate veterans of the Lyme wars who refused to ignore the suffering of patients whose symptoms are too complex and persistent for the reductionist lenses of today’s conventional medicine ‘specialists’! Thank-you for releasing this book in audio format! I plan to listen to it a second time — and then buy the text version to reference key parts when needed. Highly recommended — you will not be sorry!

a touching account of one woman’s journey into the illness community — a community that no one wants to join, but are so thankful is there. Meghan is open about the challenges faced by both the ill and those that love them — when there is no clarity. This is a well researched book with the flare of an english professor. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand how others have traversed the modern medical world. As a lyme sufferer and caretaker, I also enjoyed her chapter on long COVID and share her hope that progress will be made to benefit the entire chronic illness community.

This is an exceptional book by a medical doctor who has spent a lifetime practicing medicine by taking on the most difficult cases. With engaging case studies, descriptions of our functional systems, insights into likely root causes, and a discussion of current scientific knowledge, this book provides hope for those abandoned by doctors whose knowledge and practice is limited to simple cases with simple fixes. Thanks goodness for this author and other doctors like him. If you want to better understand health and wellness, and what can actually cause illness (mental and physical — they are the same), this is an excellent resource.

This is an updated account of the best ‘genius’ foods and science behind them. Max alludes to his recipes without ‘reading’ each in this audio version. He alludes to a pdf available for audio listeners which I assume includes the recipes. Thanks for creating an audio version! I enjoyed it.

Conrad reveals what I think is his life’s purpose through the words in this book. For a man who built his professional life on math automation to argue that ‘creating human calculators’ should not be a goal of today’s education is profound. The opportunity to move to critical, computational thinking is so needed today. Thanks Conrad for putting to a well articulated argument what I always felt during my formal education. I hope others will read/listen to this book and advocate for the change we need — so a broader range of our community can team effectively with machines/computers/AI’s in the future.

living with crohn’s disease

Great job, Tessa! Tessa provides a touching, intimate, and at time bold accounting of her experience with crohn’s disease. I enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to learn what living with crohn’s is like. as a care taker of loved ones wrestling with a different form of chronic disease (tick-borne diseases), i identified with many of the themes Tessa described, but felt at times Tessa might have tried to generalize too much based on her personal experience. Tessa suffers from a disease that conventional medicine acknowledges — at least enough to put a name on the group of symptoms. The fact that there are ‘medicines’ that hold some promise for managing crohn’s results in Tessa dismissing non conventional therapies — including whole foods based nutrient-dense diet (e.g. paleo) supported by the functional medicine community to optimally support the immune system when no other magic pill/medication is available. Such chronic illnesses (e.g., Lyme) are not acknowledged or offered effective conventional treatment to manage conditions. Tessa alluded appropriately to gaslighting — when doctors (and others) dismiss your reality and infer that it’s all in your head. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how hard it is to live with crohn’s disease — an important segment of the chronic community. Everyone is similar but different. Every person with the same disease is similar but different. Every person with a different chronic illness is similar but even more different. Thank-you for the book Tessa.

I liked the author’s well informed description of key events in the evolution of the Internet. Any technologist will likely learn some new interesting tidbits that you did not know. Great narration. Very pleased with the quality and duration.
