In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Extremely Informative

This is an American history that includes those mostly forgotten in others texts: African Americans and Native Americans. It's a text that should be required reading in all U.S. high schools.

Terrible Narration Kills Story
Revisado: 07-12-24
A waste of money. Don't buy this.
The story may be a good one, but the subpar narration ruins it. The voice sounds like a human voice but he(?) seems to be an idiot, not knowing that "Pffffft!" is a sound and instead of making the sound he spells it out.
Also, all the voices sound the same. The male characters even sound the same as the female characters! There is no variation at all.
Terrible!
Amazon apparently saved money by having an AI read this. Well, the AI sucks. Hire a human.

Historia
For Milo, everything’s a bore. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Well Narrated, But with Gratuitous Torture
Revisado: 11-06-22
If I could give the story no stars, I would. Iain Banks writes well, but he insists on including scenes of horrific torture and senseless cruelty that simply aren't necessary. For example, there's a scene of a victim who has his fingers and toes eaten off his hands and feet while he's still alive.
Why add that? He could have referred to it without describing it in excruciating detail. Other writers do that, and their stories still feel full of horror.
There was something wrong with Banks for him to have written this way. I don't know what, but I certainly don't want to be in the audience when he exorcises these demons.

A deadly coup within the Wizard's Guild leaves the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, gravely injured, and his ward Ciri missing in the third book of the New York Times best-selling series that inspired the Netflix show and the hit video games. The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup and, in the uproar, Geralt was seriously injured. The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times.

Historia
Death in Florence illuminates one of the defining moments in Western history - the bloody and dramatic story of the battle for the soul of Renaissance Florence. By the end of the fifteenth century, Florence was well established as the home of the Renaissance. In an exhilaratingly rich and deeply researched story, Paul Strathern reveals the paradoxes, self-doubts, and political compromises that made the battle for the soul of the Renaissance city one of the most complex and important moments in Western history.

Beautifully Written, Informative & Moving
Revisado: 09-08-22
This book offers a close look at how the Medici family and Savonarola both ran Florence during the Renaissance. It is fascinating, with many details that bring the key players to life.
I was especially taken with how the author humanized Savonarola and put him in perspective with regard to world history. His rightful criticisms of the Roman Catholic Church made him a forerunner of Martin Luther and other great reformers.
The narration is excellent, even if Derek Perkins mispronounces some Italian words and place names.

Historia
The Sino-American contest is driven by clashing geopolitical interests and a stark ideological dispute over whether authoritarianism or democracy will dominate the twenty-first century. But both history and China's current trajectory suggest that this rivalry will reach its moment of maximum danger in the 2020s. The Chinese challenge will most likely prove more manageable than many pessimists currently believe—but during the 2020s, the pace of Sino-American conflict will accelerate, and the prospect of war will be frighteningly real.

Highly Relevant, Informative & Well-Read
Revisado: 09-05-22
This is a book all policy makers and students of US-China relations should read, and I make this recommendation as the former editor of the website ChinaOnline.
This is not a book written to scare readers into making an impulse purchase. This is a well-thougut-out, thoroughly researched guide on what has been taking place between the US and China, what may happen if we continue on our current path, and what we can do to prevent a military conflict.
At first I didn't like the narrator. I thought her tone was too dramatic for a serious scholarly text. But then Nancy Wu did something few narrators of books on China do: she pronounced Chinese names and place-names correctly, and that won me over.
lf Ms. Wu were to tone down her narrating a tad, it would be pitch perfect.
