My favorite hard sci-fi series
Revisado: 04-16-24
I just finished this book for the third time as I start my third trip through the series. I burn through hundreds of sci-fi books each year and this is by far the best I've encountered. Highly recommended if you're a gamer to listen while playing EvE Online or something similar.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Revisado: 01-08-22
I love this book. Weir is a master storyteller and loves ships. Like the Expanse series, I can listen to Project Hail Mary a couple times a year and fall deep into the descriptions of spaceships, life aboard them, and the perils and science involved in living in space. I can't get enough.

Graham Hancock's multi-million bestseller Fingerprints of the Gods remains an astonishing, deeply controversial, wide-ranging investigation of the mysteries of our past and the evidence for Earth's lost civilization. Twenty years on, Hancock returns with the sequel to his seminal work filled with completely new scientific and archaeological evidence, which has only recently come to light.

The only fringe science I subscribe to
Revisado: 11-08-19
I am and always have been a science fanatic. I need evidence for everything and I'm not okay with most superstition. Don't believe in ghosts, alien visitors, Sasquatch, or any of that. Don't care for conspiracy theories, either.
That being said, this book is filled with evidence not only of a comet impact some 12,800 years ago, but also that our species might have had a huge setback as a result. There's also, sadly, evidence that the scientific community is just as reluctant to accept new evidence now as they were in the early days of exploring the way Earth's crust moved and that archeology is far from what I would call a science.
I've listened three times, each time looking up photos and once making a trip to the center of my home state here in Washington, where a lot of the geological evidence in this book is located. While some of the claims of a past culture are fantastic, the evidence of a tremendous flood beyond anything we've imagined is right there to see.
I now have greater insight and respect for the fact that each culture on the Earth has a cataclysmic flood story and it doesn't have to go back to religion. In fact, religion could be a bastardized retelling of an event that has happened, probably happened 12,800 years ago, and will likely happen again soon if we don't grow up and pay attention.

Still not sold on these dramatized books
Revisado: 03-06-18
While I did enjoy this story, it took me three different sessions. To me that's crazy, as I listen to audiobooks 7-8 hours a day while working. I can burn through a 40+ hour book in a single workweek.
But the special effects really distract me from the storytelling. I cared a lot less for the characters in this book, and it's because I just wanted it to be over while at the same time wanting to know how it ended.
So I'm leaving a good review based on what I did enjoy. It was a fun story and were it a normal audiobook I'd likely relisten.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

It's okay.
Revisado: 12-20-17
Unlike a lot of reviewers, I am not comparing this book to The Martian. I loved The Martian and have listened to it several times, but I understand that this book has nothing to do with that one.
I simply found this book okay. I can't see myself wanting to read it again though. It was just entertaining enough to keep my attention until the end, but that's about it. For a heist on the moon, it was a little underwhelming and sort of predictable.

Good, funny sci-fi.
Revisado: 11-06-17
I got this as a book on Prime and then a few weeks later saw the audiobook as a Daily Deal on Audible. I don't have as much time to actually sit down and read as I'd like, but I listen to audio 6-8 hours a day at my job. I get anything I can when it's cheap.
This is one of the few books that made me pay full price for the sequel. I don't know that I would have enjoyed the book as much as what was delivered to me by Mr. Prekopp. I was caught up in the story thanks to the individuality the narrator gave to each of the characters.
Though I'm a big sci-fi fan, I don't usually care for time travel stories. They always seemed to be a cop-out, a way of using things that have already happened as a basis for a story. It seems lazy to me. Most time travel stories use specific events or people. Mr. Haywood has crafted his own characters and events in history to manipulate, and has breathed them, and time-travel, to life for me in a way that actually excites me.
I just finished the second in what I assume will be a trilogy, and I'm excited for the third. This book is well worth paying full price, but if you see it as a deal, grab it immediately.

A complete guide to guns and God.
Revisado: 11-03-17
If there's one thing I've taken away from this book, it's that you should be a Christian and have lots of guns to survive the end of the world.
The author spends whole chapters talking about guns, outfitting for particular guns, how many guns each person should own, how much ammo per gun, all while reminding you to pray and "tithe till it hurts".
The author reminds you that other religious groups, like the Latter Day Saints, have canning classes available. He is gracious enough to provide this info while reminding you that he doesn't share their faith.
If you can get past that, there's good info. But nothing that can't be found in less holier than thou publishings. It reads like an episode of Doomsday Preppers that was written by the guys from Duck Dynasty. There are lots of other books just as good or better.

Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

My favorite King book, period.
Revisado: 11-01-17
I first read this book at the age of 12 during a time when I was bullied constantly by fellow students and even teachers. The kids in this novel were a driving force behind my graduating and leaving the crap town where I grew up.
I'm glad to see that 20+ years later, now a 34-year-old, and the similarities in ages with the characters haven't escaped me, the kids and the adults they became still resonate with me. I still laughed, I still cried, and I'm still sad it's over.
Ignore the movies. This is where the magic is.

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

One of my favorite audiobooks
Revisado: 03-11-17
I've listened to this book four times in as many years, usually around Christmas-time. Partly because the holiday always reminds me of Charlie and Victoria and Lou, and I can't wait to revisit the characters and experience their struggles once more. I pity them all, even Charlie, all the while hating each of them for their choices and mistakes.
I believe a good story tells as much about the characters as it does the struggles they're experiencing. And by the end of each reading, I feel like I've lost family and friends who've spent 20 hours reminding me why I hate and love them.

A deep dive into Musk's world.
Revisado: 05-01-16
I got this book because I'm a fan of Tesla and Space X. I've never really given Musk much thought, other than to be happy that sometime took initiative to make a decent car for the first time in decades and to put us back in space.
But after listening to this book, I'm motivated to stand behind the man and not just his endeavours. Elon has a lot of rough edges, but he's trying to save the human species. He has a right to be rough. It's a big job.
The author has put a lot of time into this book, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't anxious for a follow-up in a few years, now that SpaceX has successfully landed a rocket on a barge at sea and their cars are completely automated.
This book is a look into the present state of a future being built. Musk wants us to live in a science fiction novel. And now I want that, too.
