Historia
Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

It doesn't get any better than this
Revisado: 03-06-23
I don't know why the universe saw fit to lead me to these wonderful books but I must have done something right at some point. All of the JD Kirk DCI Jack Logan books are treasures, and this new one is no exception. There is so much about these stories that I love, it's hard to list everything - but I'm gonna try.
The character development in these stories is so successful. JD Kirk (Barry Hutchison) started out with a handful of memorable characters in various roles in Police Scotland and I have grown to love them all, even the ones that are not so lovable. He respectfully and realistically has women and men in his stories that, remarkably, are so recognizable and endearing that you really want to know these people and be part of 'the team'. These stories have mystery, gore, sweetness, hate, love, anger, fear, everything. Most gratifying of all is the humor that is scattered throughout each story, and it's not just a giggle here and there. There are parts of these stories that have me laughing out loud and cause me to listen to them over and over. And the language - oh the language. SO irreverent and creative! This is laugh-out-loud stuff that ought not to be missed.
I hope I have deduced correctly that there will more DCI Logan books. In this last one, we have been introduced to a new drop dead gorgeous female character who is in the process of becoming an important detective on the team, as well as a continuing references to Bob Hoon's sister, Berta, and Jeff's unlikely sideline, stand up comedy, so it seems like we can look forward to storylines that include these wonderfully funny elements, as well as the possibility of DCI Logan and his love interest, Shona, starting a family. And then there's Dave Davidson, who appears to be in the beginnings of his own romance, and of course Ben Ford and his wild woman.
I can't say enough about these stories. They are wonderful in themselves, but I am convinced that by listening to Angus King's masterful narration I have been treated to an increase in enjoyment of them by 200%. Since I didn't grow up hearing a Scottish accent, it took me awhile to get it but now I got it, and it's very seldom that I am stumped by the language and I love it the more I hear it.
JD Kirk's Bob Hoon books were excellent too! I'm glad Robert Hoon is becoming a part of the Logan series, even though I thought the 4 stand alone books were outstanding. JD Kirk has managed to redeem a character who made a mistake in judgement at the beginning of the series and make him as loveable as Ben and Tyler.
I love these books. Barry, please make them last as long as you can. Tyler, Sinead, Ben, Hamza, Jack, and all the rest (even Mitchell) are too rich a combination to let go. And now we have Tyler and Sinead's twins to deal with, so I hope the adventure will continue.

Having struck a humiliating blow against the criminal network known as the Loop, Hoon has been targeted by the Alphas, an elite squad of assassins who will not stop until he is dead. Outnumbered, outgunned, and on unfamiliar territory, Hoon’s only chance of survival lies several hundred miles north, in a place he knows better than anyone else on Earth. He swore he’d never set foot there again, but almost four decades after he left, Bob Hoon is finally going home.

Most excellent and fun!
Revisado: 07-27-22
I don't know how he does it. Barry Hutchison (a.k.a. JD Kirk) has the wonderful talent of attributing his characters with beautifully rich personalities, not to mention vocabularies! I have listened to every single one of his books twice, and "Westward" is no exception. I just love this book - the best one yet - with Bob Hoon as the main character. I am in awe of Barry's ability to come up with the most unique and funny Hoon-isms. I find myself thinking 'hey, I've got to write that one down', but of course it probably wouldn't seem quite right coming out of my mouth. For Bob Hoon, and now his sister, Berta, it seems so natural and breezy. Please don't change a thing. And I am going to add my voice to all those who have expressed joy and approval of this new character and hope we will be hearing more from her.
And I would be amiss if I didn't give equal credit to the narrator of these stories, Angus King. He is a genius, and adds so much to all of the characters of both series, DCI Logan and Bob Hoon, and I find it very, very difficult to listen to an audiobook narrated by anyone else. He has spoiled me!
These stories bring so much joy into my day. Thank you, Barry and Angus.

Revisado: 04-08-22
This story was a bit slow in starting but I ended up thinking it was one of the best books I’ve ever ‘read’. Main characters are relatable and smart, and come up with a genius solution to a unique problem. An 1847 problem but re-emerging now, 175 years later. I will be recommending this book.

As always, JD Kirk writes some pretty captivating stories, and after having read all of the previous Jack Logan installments I can't imagine anyone but Angus King narrating them. They are smart, irreverent, funny, and endearing, and I look forward to more. I SO LOVE the relationship that our hero has with fellow officers, who are also lovable in their own right. I wish these books would go on forever!

I love this crime series. Its narration by Angus King is superb. He captures the voices of different characters in charming intonations and has me giggling at the interaction between various personalities, especially those of DC Tyler Niesh and DCI Logan. Jack Logan is easy to love. More, please!

Was the biggest case of his career the worst mistake he ever made? Ten years ago, DCI Jack Logan stopped the serial child-killer dubbed "Mister Whisper", earning himself a commendation, a drinking problem, and a broken marriage in the process...When another child disappears a hundred miles north in the Highlands, Jack is sent to lead the investigation and bring the boy home. But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

Felt true. Unforgettable main character.
Revisado: 01-21-20
This story sounded like it was passed down from a family member who knew the people and details. What a rich and intricate life the characters had! Even though the everyday efforts to get food and shelter were undeniably difficult, somehow the people had an honesty that does not seem to be present today. Maybe that's just my imagination. The harsh living conditions and lack of nutrition are something that we in the 21st century U.S. have not had to experience and it's quite painful to read about, but I was glad to be reminded that things are so much better in many ways than they were 100 years ago. The narration brought something very special to this story, but I am partial to C. McCarron after listening to "Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine." I'll be looking for more books by this author - she has something.

Better and Better
Revisado: 09-15-19
This is the fifth in the series of eight books and every book is better than the one before. Well, maybe not better, but different, and just as good. I don't know how this is all going to end, but the story is captivating. The narrator of this series is such a talent, and I can't imagine experiencing this story without that beautiful Scottish voice. I really don't know how she does so many voices, those of men, women, children, different European accents - it's really quite amazing. My favorite voice is, of course, that of Jame Fraser, our hero, It is stunningly sexy. Those who have watched the Starz series on TV will have no trouble picturing that fine specimen of a man, Sam Heugan, as the Jamie of the books. He's the perfect man to play that part and Davina Porter gives him the perfect voice in the audible version. This is an adventure.
