Once you get past the cursing, or if you're like me and don't really mind, what you get is a really fun and entertaining group of friends chatting about weird stuff. If you've ever enjoyed talking about ghost or UFOs or Bigfoot with friends at a bar and laughing at all the stupid s*** you come up with, you'll enjoy this podcast.
Sometimes there's even some depth and nuance in there.

Nice, critical look at secret societies and the conspiracy theories, lore, fiction, and claims surrounding them, as well as verifiable facts about the organizations including the historical origins of select groups.

A valuable read for skeptics and believers alike. The Macks provide real insight into the creatures that inhabit our thoughts and imaginations.

Great story. Terrible narrator.

Everyone knows the basic Harry Potter story by now. If you haven't already read the books you may have seen the movies.
The books are better. They have more details, more nuance, and are just a better experience in general.
The narrator on this is horrible though. He has a whining tone, that is especially emphasized when he is drawing out words, particularly the 'e' sound. (e.g. Harryyyyyy, Ginnyyyyy, etc)
But, if you want to re-experience the story during your commute or on a road trip, or otherwise can't reread the book in print or Braille edition, the series is worth checking out in audiobook form, despite the annoying tone of the narrator.

It's enjoyable, but I have to edit my original review after deeper consideration. It's only half the story. It sets you up to HAVE to read the next book in the series to get the whole story. You expect something to lead you into the next book with an ongoing series like this, but most of the other books have been complete in and of themselves. This one isn't. It's the first half of a two book story.

That isn't my chief criticism though. If you've ready through 15 other books before getting this one, you're going to read the next one too. It's a writing sin, but it isn't an unforgivable sin.

What really bothers me is the way that several characters act, if not fully out of character, at least in a way that is unprecedented for them. Particularly Ebenezar McCoy and Lara Raith. Without giving too many spoilers both act towards Dresden in very emotional ways that we haven't seen in previous books. McCoy throughout the book and Lara only towards the end. But it didn't fit what we know and have seen of these characters previously. The one thing that DOES track with the other books is that Dresden could have given pre-emptive explanations to both, and chose not to do so. That's one of those infuriating things about Harry Dresden that we HAVE seen in other books though, his propensity to keep secrets when a simple explanation could defuse a ridiculous plot thread packed with unnecessary drama.

Despite all this, it's worth it. If you are familiar with the Dresden series, you've been waiting for this, it delivers a lot of action, even if it ends on a cliff-hanger.

If not, go back and start at the beginning. The first couple of books are compelling. Not the best, but good. It's worth reading through 15 books to get here though.

Interesting content, terrible narrator

This isn't really original content from Redfern, rather it's a collection of essays by acquaintances or anecdotes and content shared with Redfern by others.
Some are more interesting than others, but for the serious students of ufology – especially those with an interest in high strangeness – there is some material worth taking in.

The narrator, however, makes the listening a struggle. From his odd pronunciation of words like surveillance and his mispronunciation of ufology to the general tone of his voice, it's distracting. He also has odd pauses, re-reads certain lines like he's lost his place, and is generally a horrible narrator. But, if you can get past that, there is some meat to pick from the bones of this book.

It isn't the same as reading it yourself, but this reading was fantastic, and took me right back to my youth.
I saw the cartoon as a kid before reading the book, and this reminded me the magic of hearing the story for the first time, in someone else's voice. But it has that richer story I experienced when I finally read the book.
The reader is fantastic, with different character voices and not a bad singer. (Though I found myself wanting to hear a few of the songs with the melody from the cartoon. Like I said, it took me back.)

An interesting look at the intersection of traditional folklore, urban legend, and internet creepypasta. redfern drawers some intriguing parallels between the image of the internet phenomenon Slenderman and other boogie men characters throughout history.

Sitting here two decades into the 21st century, Fry's Victorian Secrets gives us a look back at how we once were as a people, and great insight into who we are currently.
It is a fantastic program that I can't recommend enough.

Lewis takes what could arguably be one of the more mundane subjects of conversation, the weather, and turns it not only into a compelling story, but a warning of the unintended consequences of releasing metaphorical storms. Such as those that can be unleashed on the political world, and from there onto government agencies that we may be relying on without even knowing it.
A spectacular story, and a fine performance from the author/narrator.
Highly recommended listen.
